I was the Captain on the inbound flight.The stator actuator on the number three engine had failed on short final, just prior to landing. We reduced thrust on that engine and made a normal landing. The mechanics thought they had repaired the actuator, but that proved not to be the case. When the outbound crew attempted to start the engine, it resulted in a hot start. They aborted the start and returned to the gate. The engine was repaired and the flight departed for Manila.

+Jack Wortman -- Hi Capt. Wortman -- I almost thought you were kidding, until I checked your channel. I have a friend who used to captain a 747 until the mid 2000s; the stories he's got are definitely worth a good night, or two, of scotch on the rocks.

yeah thats what i said.
@mytmousemalibu6 жыл бұрын
Whoops, yea as soon as I read of the stator actuator failure and this is the next start, yup, hot start indeed! The engine compressor blade stators are variable angle and a very specific angle(s) is needed for starting. There should NEVER be glowing debris dumping out of the ass end like that. They cook the snot out of something in there like the 1st stage nozzle or blades. Maybe combustor liner. Hope they replaced it and if not borescoped the hot section REALLY well.

Great video! It must be quite unusual to see a 747 failing to start an engine so closely
@RDU846812 жыл бұрын
On engine start up the smoke started (no unsual for cold startup), then it was followed by small sparks (look closely) coming out of the bypass cowling. This plane's birth was 8/13/1999, and it looked and behaved like a teenager too.
@longshot760111 жыл бұрын
If I were on that plane I wouldn't be as concerned about the smoke as much as the glowing, chunky bits coming out of the aft end of the engine on the start-up attempt.

does Delta have maintenance crew in Nagoya or did they borrow from either JAL or ANA? let's not forget this plane is an ex-NW 744 delivered in the 90's. DE inherited this bird after the acquisition of NW
@KingHarlaus111 жыл бұрын
747-8 is my favourite but I still like 747-400 And what's with the negative votes it's just a opinion. And the 2 top crashes I know it's pilot error but I never said it was the aircraft's fault. I just prefer other planes over the 747.
@epjac221012 жыл бұрын
So, what was going on with the engine? Did that plane takeoff after they fixed it?
@blampa10 жыл бұрын
Lots of misinformation here. First off, the PW4056 engine has full FADEC (Full authority digital engine control) and therefore does not have a manual fuel input. Secondly, as the 747 APU often starts two engines at once, the difference in rotational speed of both three and four shows that the problem is friction within the engine preventing it from spooling up. Then the sparks at circa 1:20 show that it is indeed a frictional fault, and most likely from the HPC (high pressure compressor), as these engines have a history of problems with the synchronizing ring and the leveling arm pins on the VSV (variable stator vanes). At around 2:00 you can see they try to start it again, and the much slower N1 speed accompanied with smoke means the initial start attempt has allowed a lot of material from the HPC to go downstream to other HPC discs, the annular combustor nozzles, the HPT and the LPT. In other words, blade tips rubbed against either the cause or the stators and the resultant friction blasted fragments through the gas path and destroyed the engine.

You get a lot of misinformation since MOST have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to aviation. Armchair comments from most with little or no actual experience. Nothing wrong with making comments but if you really have no expertise in a particular area, maybe you should just saying nothing. "blampa" is however, correct.

so many bs. that engine just got a broken starter.
@johnsarmiento17979 жыл бұрын
so in this case the busted engine will be replaced for the plane to fly again?
@michaelhollister79329 жыл бұрын
John Sarmiento Yes. The engine will be (has been) repaired and the aircraft is in operation again. Generally speaking and depending on the damage, an engine will either be repaired on the aircraft, removed temporarily from the engine strut and repaired, or replaced (the most expensive option). But you don't "throw the baby out with the bath-water" just because one of four engines needs some work. :)

These engines don't have individual starters, they use bleed air (hot compressed air) from the APU to spin the engines up, then fuel is introduced and the engine starts (usually).
@U201019549 жыл бұрын
J Rollins u can find the starter of that engine inside the core cowl at around 3 o'clock position, and yes. the starter is driven by apu bleed air. i actually replaced one of the engine starter in the past because that damn starter got its shaft sheared during engine startup
