It is actually the most interesting plane in Delta's fleet history. They had their first run with the 747 buying five and launching in 1970, getting rid of them by 1977 because they were "too big" for their network. Meanwhile their competitors kept flying them. Then in 2008 with the Northwest merger, they got 26 more of them, split between cargo and passenger. Yet Delta again got tired of them and thought they were too big, as the 777 carried nearly as many passengers on two engines. So after just 9 years they retired all of them again, not wanting the operating costs. Of the US airlines, Delta had the 747s for less time than the other majors overall and really never liked them all that much.

It's pretty interesting how they never seemed to fit well in the fleet. Nonetheless, we're glad they kept these -400s flying for as long as they did!

Me, too. Unfortunately, both Delta and United are retiring all their 747's one-by-one right now. In fact, Delta just recently retired a 747-400 that will be parked permanently at the Delta Air Museum in Atlanta. Go check it out when you have the chance. Lufthansa is currently operating the new 747-800....a gorgeous aircraft. I wish carriers would order more of these. However, airlines around the world are slowly getting rid of nearly all their four-engine aircraft in favor of the two-engine counterparts. So sad.....I've seen the birth and demise of the 707's, DC-8's, DC-10's, L-1011's, MD-11's, 727's, DC-9's and now.....MD-80's, and the fabled 747. Just sad.

sandiegotrojandawg It truly is sad. We're doing our best to document the 100% real sound of these birds, but we probably won't get the chance to film 707s, DC-8s, L-1011s, etc...

Love these Queens. The A380 will never reach the status of the 747. I lived in Korea from 1990-1994 and flew Northwest's new (then) 747-400's across the Pacific many many times. Wonderful aircraft. It's size and power never ceased to amaze me. Hate that they are in their "sunset" years.

@vbscript26 жыл бұрын
Yeah, as another Delta frequent flier, I'd love to see Delta order the 747-8, but I doubt it's going to happen. They've got enough A350s and A330s on order to cover their wide-body needs for quite a while when combined with their existing 777s, A330s, and 767s. Delta One Suites upstairs on a 747-8 sure would be awesome, though. The upstairs seats on the 744 were my favorite seats in all of Delta's fleet.
@ChrisZoomER3 жыл бұрын
Newer 747s have nearly all jet noise both bypass and core exhaust. Older 747s along with other older planes like the DC-10 had more buzzsaw noise as the fan rotated faster on those planes than today because many modern day jet engines operate the fan on a separate low pressure compressor driven turbine which makes it rotate slower than fans that were linked to a single compressor rather than the multistage compressors found in modern engines.

I always visit Florida and Fort Lauderdale each year, and usually we stay at a hotel near the beach and the harbour. Its nice to see all the planes takeoff over the ocean. My favourites are the Boeing 757-300s, 767s, and especially the MD-80s that always leaves a smoke trail behind, I also have memories of Thomas Cook A330 and the loud Fedex Dc-10s. But I havent seen a 747 yet takeoff from Fort Lauderdale. I can only imagine what it would look like. And during afternoon I also see the 777s A330s and A380s descending into Miami.

Delta and United's 747-400s were at the end of their service life. Delta had the first 747-400s off the line (inherited from Northwest,) nearing 30 years old now. As much as I loved flying on them, there wasn't really any viable way to keep those flying. Unfortunately, Boeing wasn't able to get 787 production slots quickly enough for Delta's needs, so Delta went with the A330 and A350 for their fleet replacement. If/when Boeing gets the NMA/MOM out the door, I expect Delta will be ordering them for 757/767 replacement.
