I'm with Martina in this, I had always hate cigarette of any kind and their smell. My maternal grandmother smoked cigars and one day my grandfather (who had a heart disease) went to the doctor; the doctor told him that if he didn't stop smoking he could not help him, my grandfather's answer? "but doctor, I don't smoke!"; secondhand smoking was killing him and eventually did.

People who smoke: I have a right to smoke. People who don't smoke: I have a right to breath clean air. Reality: People who smoke can wait to smoke outside. People who don't smoke can't wait to breath.

As a smoker myself, I despize the behavior of most other smokers. They think smoking is cool with everyone and (as u have said) blow their dirty smokey stuff at others. I have a husband that is against smoking and I don't think I lit more than 2 cigarettes jn front of hi in the last 6 years. I don't smoke in places where my smoke might disturb others (like bus stations, relatively closed public spaces). And thankfully, here it is illegal to smoke inside public buildings, busses etc. Just because I have a nasty habit doesn't mean others should suffer from it as well... peace out! :)

I live in Cheongju and in the newer areas here you can see it being enforced, but everywhere else there is smoking inside everywhere. Higher class places = less smoking, but you know, when an older dude lights up a dart sometimes restaurant owners just let them do it to avoid the Confucian verbal ass kicking they would receive.

I'm totally against smoking because firstly, I don't see any good points about it. It doesn't even look cool like what many smokers think. Secondly, it's a waste of money, especially since it's quite pricey over here in Singapore. Don't you have better things to use the money for? Thirdly, smokers stink. I can't lie about this. The smell is honestly horrid and I especially hate it when a smoker boards the bus after finishing a cigarette and decides to sit in front of me.

Eat Your Kimchi shanomnomnom We're non smokers too, and coming from So Calif.... It's basically banned in restaurants, pools, lots and lots of places that make us VERY VERY happy. Unfortunately, weed is now becoming illegally legal here and they 2-3 shops on every block and the smell makes you ill driving the streets in your car, juts being at home, everywhere people might be doing it, or nearby you. Just as bad as cigarettes, but weed can make people very ill from smelling it. People like us. We have a hard time considering traveling to other States or countries because they're all Puff the magic Dragon's everywhere and it's so bad for their health AND YOURS. Its such a health thing in LA and Calif, that people dont smoke, and those who do are looked at like gross disgusting insecure people that you dont want to be around. I mean they smell like 100% smoke for hours after smoking outside at work as well, and dating or kissing someone who does... disgusting. I want to enjoy fresh air driving in my car, and all those other normal healthy air breathing things people want to do, especially in a great place like Calif.

EVG 1 I also agree about the dating thing too. I wouldnt date people over that as well. And it really turned me off to Lee Dong-Wook on Roomate2 when he revealed that. I like a lot about him from what I saw on the show, but as soon as I heard he smokes i was like, nope. So even though I'd never see him in real life, it really was something that caused me to see red flags and put me off for a few weeks. I'll still watch his movies, and hope he does kick the habit in 2015, for the sake of his health, breath, and everyone around him, including any future girlfriends/wife.

1- not all smokers stink 2- a person can choose what to do with there own money 3- in a lot of cultures smoking isn't seen as such a horrific thing 4- if you don't like someone smoking near you , you could always move?

Amy Kilbride 1: Bruh... Yes they do. I smoked for yeeears and when I finally quit, I realized how terrible the smoke smelled. It sticks to your clothes and doesn't come out for ages unless washed. They don't smell like B.O or anything. They just smell like smoke. Simple. 2: They sure can! 3: Very true. Most cultures ALSO agree that it's unhealthy. 4: Someone smoking near you is LITERALLY damaging your health. Anyone with half a brain knows that it's unhealthy, and should be considerate enough not to make others inhale the crap. It's your own personal choice to smoke and damage yourself. People shouldn't have to "move" because of your habits. lol. Absurdity.

I hate when people say "Oh it's my right to have a choice so I can smoke" ...yeah, well it's my right to not smoke and therefore not have to breathe in second hand smoke, but I can't do that when you and the wind blows it into the air which I breathe... Also, I find it really strange that in another one of your videos, you said Koreans are really big on dental care, yet they smoke a lot. And yeah, cigarettes are around $7+ in NY now. Not only the point of smoking affecting your health, but it's extremely expensive. I was in 711 and these two girls in front of me were picking out cigarettes and one pack came to over $10!!! And they handed over their money like no big deal! WHAT?

Ugh, I can't stand smoking, but it's not because of a personal distaste, I'm actually very highly allergic to cigarette smoke, particularly nicotine. Nicotine can make my throat swell and I've actually had to go to the hospital twice in my life due to my extreme allergy. It really sucks, because I'm always having to watch out for it. I have many friends who smoke and I always have to make sure I stand upwind from them when they stop for a cigarette, but I don't often get that kind of warning. I really don't have a point to this except, please smokers.... don't kill me.

You know what I've noticed from smoking and non-smoking countries is that those who are avidly against smoking, violently so, are usually the ones who have a better standard of living and stress-wise are not that plagued. If life is good, of course you want to live as long as possible, shifting the finances (that would be going towards tobacco) towards looking younger (cremes, face-lifts, tans, liposuction etc). But not everyone gets to live that way. Although it gives you the feeling of relieving stress (smoking as an addiction is primarily psychologically, nicotine is flushed out of your body fairly quickly) if that does the trick when you have bills upon bills and your country isn't an economical,political oasis well.....do what you gotta do to get through the day. It wasn't that long ago when Northern America was also a heavy smoker type of place so calm down people, you don't get a medal or the tingly happy ego-boosting sensation when you try to "save" a life if you shout hard enough about your hatred towards smoking. As long as you are respectful around people and smoke in designated areas, everything will be okay.

During middle school and high school we had this guy named Michael come to health class to talk about his life as someone with HIV and as a former hardcore drug addict (he did stuff like lsd, cocaine, you name it). There was always the question of what his biggest regret in life that he would want to go back in time and change, he would always answer that he regrets picking up his first cigarette because now he can hardly walk a short distance without having extremely bad breathing. It's amazing that he always answered with that than the time he decided to do inject the drug in him with that dirty needle that gave him HIV.

Wow, the comments from this are super disappointing. I like to watch these videos for 2 reasons. 1. learning more about things in Korea. 2. They are hilarious! Everyone can have an opinion. They think smoking is disgusting? So what. They are allowed to have that opinion. If you don't like it then why not just ignore it? Rudely stating YOUR opinion doesn't make anything better, and it sure won't change someone else's opinion. -Siiiiiiiigh-

Nancy Bracken So...they're allowed and encouraged to state their opinions but other people are rude and discourteous for doing the same? In this world if you're going to give your opinion on something, people WILL give theirs, especially when it's about subject with strong emotions tied to it. You need to be prepared to hear people say theirs, argue against yours and stand by your own opinions.

I'm a nonsmoker, but I honestly miss when it was allowed for people to smoke in bars and cafe's. At my favorite spots, the smoker's section had the coolest people. You could sit there and play board games, have crazy political/philosphical dicussions, or find good drinking buddies with random strangers. As soon as they passed the nonsmoking rules, all my favorite cafe's became overrun with laptop addicted, "I need everyone within ten feet of my to not breathe while I concentrate on this ever important email", hipsters who only discovered the place after the fact, but pretend like they've known about it forever. Not to say that all nonsmokers are like this, because they bviously. However; there's no denying that the pretentious customer level increased at least tenfold after the smoking ban.

@georgeford6056
@georgeford6056 10 жыл бұрын
If your mother died at 40, it is highly unlikely that smoking was the cause. 10% to 15% of lung cancer occurs in people who have never smoked and are not due to radon exposure (genetic). Another 10% to 20% of lung cancer is caused by excessive radon exposure. This means that up to 35% of lung cancers are not smoking related, and those cancers (mostly aggressive small cell carcinomas) tend to start much earlier than those with a strong association with smoking. Even among smokers over 50, a fair percentage of their lung cancers are not entirely due to smoking but to a combination of genetics, radon and smoking.

You're seriously going to argue with me? Wow. Her lung cancer WAS caused by smoking. Brekken Quintana We don't even know yet what causes cancer, and it is impossible for a doctor to know whether an illness was "smoking related" or not. Basically what happens is people get sick and if they answer "yes" to whether or not they have ever smoked at any point in their lives or whether they live with a smoker, the illness will automatically be attributed to smoking. There is nothing scientific about it, I assure you.

Simon and Martina can you do a TL;DR on illegal kind of drugs? Such as cocaine, acid and so forth? It isn't so unheard of people doing that in North America, what is Korea's stand on those meany drugs?
@idealrealityify
@idealrealityify 10 жыл бұрын
(Neither Simon nor Martina but...) As someone living in the US from Korea, illegal drugs are basically non-existent in Korea. Basically any substance other than alcohol and tobacco (and hookah, if you count that as substance) is very serious business -- and yes, that includes weed. If there's physical evidence that you smoked weed, you will either pay sh*t tons of fine or end up in jail (in the most literal sense). I've actually never even heard of any harder drugs (e.g. cocaine, acid, etc) on the news, most likely because it's more or less non-existent... The general attitude of society towards illegal drugs is very negative, which is probably why Korea's been able to maintain the drug-free condition.

The problem with smoking is that it doesn't only damage your body, but others as well. It's polluting the air. The air is polluted enough, if you want to damage your body than that's your business, but smoking damages other people's lungs. I know some people get hooked and are addicted and it's hard to get off, but don't ever justify it or get mad when people ask you to stop smoking near them.

Dating a smoker while being a non-smoker was kind of hard sometimes, because it's nice that they want to hang out with you & kiss you, but you always have to wait for them to confirm that they no longer taste like ash, and you have to awkwardly find ways to tell them to smoke in different directions & stuff too, since you don't want to inhale their second-hand smoke.

When I smoked I made sure to stay away from crowds and respect their space. I would even hide the cigarette because I knew it still made people uncomfortable. But sometimes it would get me angry because people would still give me the stink eye. Some people would talk bad about me just because I smoked. It's none of their business and I went out of my way to make sure it didn't bother them but they still went on to talk about me behind my back. It is a different form of bullying and people are quick to judge. Sort of what Simon and Martina are doing in this video. I know that I shouldn't have started smoking in the first place but shit happens and before one knows it it's too late to just give it up. Their are millions of people that would love to quit but they need help and the last thing they need is people making fun of them because they smell like an ash tray. The stress put upon them to stop and not being able too only makes them want to smoke another but I know you guys wouldn't understand because you never smoked or being highly addicted to a drug. I say drug because being addicted to ranch dressing is not even close to being addicted to smoking. Anyways just wanted to give in my two cents. Just remember if you want people to stop smoking don't make fun of them and point out all the obvious. They know and the more you tell them the way you do they will make sure to light a few more afterwards just because the stress you put upon them

^ for all the cigarettes haters. Just because you don't smoke doesn't make everyone to be the same as you. To make an example, i don't drive but some non smokers do, when there is an exhaust emitted, which contain the same compound in cigarettes, does that make you an irritating jerk as well? I want to have clean air as well if i walk across the street. Sterotypes for non smokers, bahhh expecting so much more.

in singapore there is lots of bans on smoking like you can't smoke anywhere but designated smoking areas for example in open food centres there's a line on the floor that separates non smoking and smoking area but you absolutely can't smoke in closed/airconed places and there are signs everywhere that says you are not allowed to smoke occasionally ppl still smoke at places they are not allowed to but it's quite ok here in singapore cigarettes are also quite expensive here in singapore it's at least 12 dollars there are ads and campaigns to tell us to stop smoking or don't smoke and schools also teach us not to smoke so the smoking in singapore is quite ok since people smoke but the government places great emphasis on the smokers

There are certain things people can do to be polite while smoking. I smoke due to excessive pain and stress. You can pull it away from children, behind u as to disapprove and hide it. I also never smoke inside, and not in large groups. U also could just aim up away from peoples faces. Just be considerate. But if a person chooses to smoke, its OK to show disapproval once. But do not constantly have a go at them. If u see them struggling and smoking more. Then maybe bring it up again. Just be considerate of both sides.

I have smokers friends and I don't see them differently or what just don't smoke in public or into passer by. Wear a cover up suit and breath in your own smoke yourselves. When smoking is getting banned, smokers complain about their rights, and they don't give a damn on people that dislike the smoke their rights to live smoke free. You don't say we are rude characterising smokers. Why can't you see smokers are also judging non smokers being hypocrits and blah blah just because we don't like to breath seccond hand smoke.

chum etz, soo schlimm isches aso au ned :) but seriously I've never encountered as many people who smoke like in Switzerland. There certainly are some stupid teen smokers who do disturb non smokers with their smoke on purpose, which I have to agree is rude. And I don't like smoking indoors too (since the Zurich Mainstation Hall is neither indoor nor outdoor, it's something in between.) What I found especially interesting is, I had no problem smoking in the clubs in Korea because the air conditioner/circulation whatever was that good, you could barely smell the smoke and you could breathe perfectly. Another good idea from Korea is, when you go to smoker sections in public places like restaurants, cafes, clubs etc. they always put a tiny wet piece of paper in the ashtray so the cigarette will not burn any further so it won't burn any other cigs in there (filter or some leftover tobacco) and won't cause that ugly smell. I think this should be like that everywhere. Or making smoker sections (fumoirs) so it won't disturb other people.

One time I was on the bus and EVERYONE up front was choking and gagging as this guy got on after me smelling so highly of smoke (like he was saving a cigarette somewhere on his person or SOMETHING and it was so bad that from the back I was suffocating to the point where I could not get the window open and the people at the front with all their kids and all that were coughing and crying and complaining to the driver to kick the guy off!!! I had asked the guy at the other end literally begged him to PLEASE OPEN YOUR F-ING WINDOW and all he does is start cursing me out (he was African American) and telling me to get my fat white ass off the bus and other horrid things!!! There was ONE woman up front sitting right next to the guy and she heard me and was PLEADING with the driver to pull over and telling him repeatedly someone is VERY sick!!! Driver did NOT listen and I had grabbed the cord and got to the back door and banged on it as I could no longer speak and hope he listened to her as I was about to collapse!!! He did and I got out! That ALL happened in 1-2 minutes of the bus pulling out from the Subway (train) station and going to its very next stop! Bus drivers here are taught to DO NOTHING not even pull over unless the issues IMMEDIATELY impact their ability(ies) to drive! Somehow he was NOT effected by it and everyone elderly and young in the row closest to him barely a foot away were! They said ONLY way they could do something was if I got the guys bus number and who the fuck would be looking for that in such a situation!?!

I suffer from really bad chronic anxiety that makes me really worried, stressed and exhausted all the time, like every single second of the day. The only thing that helps me get through my days, the only thing that keeps me calm enough to be able to handle life in general is cigarettes, I have tried quitting many times but everytime I have really bad panic attacks that lasts for hours until I pass out. I don't want to be a smoker, but I can't live without them right now. It makes me sad when people are judging me JUST because I'm a smoker. I'm a dirty gross smoker... when they have no idea why I smoke. I have tried to quit, I have tried to find something else to keep me calm but nothing works... And when I lost my mother 7 years ago my anxiety got a lot worse. I have tried medicines, but they don't help with the konstant stress and worry. I'm hoping that when I move to my boyfriend in 2 months I will have a stable enough life to be able to quit. But please just stop being so mean towards smoker, you have no idea why they smoke. And yes, when they blow smoke in your face it's extremely disrespectful and you have the right to be mad. I don't want to be a smoker and I get so sad when people are judging me, being mad att me when they don't know me.

I didn't quit because of people talking crap all the time I quit because of the coughing and wheezing in the morning and because I didn't want to make it worse on my body. Have you tried e-ciggs? I know the news media make them out to be scary as if they are going explode on you for no reason but they don't. All the ones that I have seen on the news that explode are the ones people modify them to make bigger clouds. If you don't modify them they are fine. Just do your research and you will see for yourself. You will see they are way safer then ciggs. Just don't get fruity flavored juice. Those can be bad. =) Cheer up in this world not everyone will understand you but it's ok because there are far more people out there that do. Just that some are a little scared to admit it.

As someone who is serving in the American military, I can tell you that most people here have some kind of addicting habit, whether it be smoking, alchahol, or dipping, and often a combo of the three. Interestingly enough, most of them did not have this habit coming in. I only started smoking after I entered as well. I think it's mostly due to the stressful enviornement, and also the cycle that occurs because people are introduced to it as they enter, and then in turn either directly or indirectly pass it on to the people who come in after them.

I just (fairly) recently quit smoking after 17 years or so, so I understand why it's nice not being annoyed by other peoples' smoke all the time.. BUT! I am pretty damn liberal and I simply cannot see how it's any business of the government what people do on private property. A restaurant is not a public area like a library is, where everyone has a right to be. A restaurant is privately owned, so if the owner wants to make a non-smoking restaurant, no one has ever prevented him from doing that. The owner can kick you out if he doesn't like you, if he finds you ugly, if he has a dress code or whatever.. You do not have a right to be there. It's a privilege that the owner can take away whenever he feels like it. It is private property that he allows you to use. He should be the one deciding smoking rules on his own property. If people don't like it, they can go elsewhere. Just like the people who find his dress code idiotic. People need to get rid of the entitled attitude. Entering a bar, a restaurant, a club, a bookstore etc. etc. is not a right. It is a privilege. If you don't like it, gtfo. Smoking rules on private property is none of the government's business. Period.
@MissCaraMint

What about the freedom of people who react really badly to smoking, shouldn't they have the right to be out in public without getting physically ill? If you allow smoking in bars and restaurants, there aren't going to be places that are exclusively smoke free because that's bad for business. Besides what if you have friends who smoke and you want to be able to just go out for drinks with them without feeling really poorly the next day? I think the prohibition on smoking inside eating restaurants promotes freedom rather than restrict it. It's not as if smokers can't take a quick trip outside if they so wish.
@gnawershreth
@gnawershreth 11 жыл бұрын
But that's exactly the thing.. There is no "Freedom of people who react badly to smoking." just like there's no "Freedom of people who react badly to smog, perfume, pollen, dust from a building site or whatever". And no, no one has the right to go anywhere and not be annoyed, offended, bothered etc. No one does. Not just when it comes to smoking. There is no such right anywhere. It's not about allowing smoking or not. It's about letting the owner make his own rules for his own property. He's still allowed to keep it non-smoking if he wants to. Like I said, I don't smoke anymore, so I like non-smoking areas as well, but if I enter a smoking area, it's my problem no matter how annoying it is. If I can't go out with my smoking friends without feeling poorly the next day, I shouldn't go out with them... Or if they're good friends, hopefully they will understand my problem and go somewhere where smoking isn't allowed inside. Otherwise they're pretty shitty friends tbh. The smoking bans absolutely restrict freedom. It's not even about the smokers even though their freedom is obviously restricted as well.. It's about the property owners' rights. That's my problem with it. If I buy a building and start a shop of some kind, it is MY shop! My rules! If I want a bookstore where people can smoke, that should be MY choice, since I'm paying the bills. That's all there is to it. It's the government banning smoking on private property. A privately owned business is just as private as your house is. You want the government telling you that you can't smoke in your home? Or maybe perfume is next, since plenty of people are allergic to that as well. Want the government to make the rules for perfume in your home? It's none of their business!

Gnawer Shreth I can see where you are coming from, but I agree with MissCaraMint about smokers being able to just step outside. Yes the owner could be able to decide if they want smoking inside, but they cut down their customer base by doing that. At bars, step outside, because you might want to smoke a few while hanging out there for long periods of time. But restaurants? No. Self control. As someone who has never smoked and is extremely sensitive, I dislike going into places where smoking has occured, because even though I love that band that's playing, I can't enjoy it because the man next to me is smoking and blowing it onto the back of my head, which actually happened. I left with a strong migraine. So the money that I payed to get it went to waste, while the man behind me gets to enjoy the show. My body is my property, as the man is to his own. But I don't go into his space and smack him across the face, which is basically the same as smoking me out. I'm sorry, but smokers should be more considerate of others. And if anyone reading this is a considerate smoker, thank you, I really appreciate it because I'm that person who has to walk by smokers holding her breath.
@gnawershreth
@gnawershreth 11 жыл бұрын
Sandy Arthur Of course smokers can go outside, but it shouldn't be the government telling them to, unless they're in a public place of course. If you removed the smoking ban, the restaurants, bars etc. could still keep the non-smoking rule. Now it would just be THEIR rule instead of a law, which would make me perfectly alright with it. I know it sounds harsh, but you being sensitive is your problem. I don't mean that in an evil way or anything, but society at large is based around the average guy. Not around the most sensitive, most fragile, most handicapped etc. No one has a right to visit a restaurant. It is a privilege that you can take advantage of, if you wish. If you can't go there and have a good time due to smoke, perfume, dust, heat, stairs (you may be in a wheelchair) etc. that is your problem. Not the rest of the world's. Go somewhere else. If the smoking bans were removed, I'm sure a lot of places would remain non-smoking, since it's probably nice for the staff and requires a lot less cleaning/repainting making it cheaper. I would be perfectly alright with it, if the rules were made by the owners themselves. I'm not having a go at you here btw, cause I prefer non-smoking places as well, so the same rules go for myself. My issues with smoke (and anything else that may ruin a person's night out.) is MY problem. Not the problem of the bar owners, the other customers etc. We can't expect the world to change to fit our preferences. If we don't like it, we can gtfo.

so by that right i should be able to walk around naked and when people are bothered they should just go away because it's their fault for being sensitive? or if i'm playing music loudly at 3am my neighbors should just 'get over it' because im on private property? no it doesn't work that way, if you're doing something obtrusive to other people's lives or well being there are going to be (completely justified) laws and regulations on what you're doing

Wow, loud anti-smokers that love to call all smokers nasty and gross. Real heroes. Get over it, let people enjoy their guilty pleasures without you preaching to and insulting them. It's not like alcohol, coffee, tattoos and hair dye are healthy habits. I get that inconsiderate smokers are annoying but a little 2nd hand smoke isn't so bad and most of you hardcore anti-smokers are expert over-exaggerators.

Wow, you really hate smokers. Do you actually get hospitalized every time you walk by a smoker? seems pretty ridiculous. Doesn't car exhaust and living in a smoggy area also affect your asthma? I'm sorry you're so sensitive but Its becoming unreasonable, especially here in Canada. We can't all cater to the most sensitive people if you're that affected by bad air you should live in the mountains or something. Anybody can be a dick about their 2nd hand smoke, most people I know are decent about it. Its crazy though, my smoker friends can't even have a smoke on the beach without some freak show having a hissy fit about it. A lot of the time they're so far from getting any significant amount of smoke, they just catch a wiff and get all self-righteous and indignant. I get that smoke affects other people if the smoker isn't being considerate, no capitals needed. The reason I pointed out other examples is because you keep going off about how stupid smokers are and how gross it is and on and on. Some people think tattoos are gross or drunk people, we don't need to constantly tell them how gross they are and how dangerous they're being. I just think the way you talk about smokers is insulting and completely overboard. I actually agree that you shouldn't smoke on the sidewalk unless there is barely anyone around. It's situational, like if you're outside the bar at night, go nuts, and the people walking can suck it up but definitely not in an enclosed area. Anyways I could go on and on, i haven't been where you live, the smokers could just be assholes about it there but here in BC I find that they have it rough. Too much judgement from people who usually have their own potentially bad health habits and crazy laws that go way overboard.

I'm clearly thinking about other people, I've written plenty of times that smokers should be reasonable about where they smoke. Of course anti-smokers should ease off a bit and accept that they get control all of the air everywhere they happen to be. Isn't that selfish? Insisting on clean air no matter where you are. I sometimes have to play dodge the bum, they're far more annoying than a little smoke for 2 seconds, but I just accept it. Some people wear so much perfume that I can barely breath, they're terrible, I actually get sick from it but I accept it for the most part. I don't insist that the grocery store clerk turns off their godawful music while I'm shopping, that shit will rot your brain. Getting venomously angry because some people enjoy smoking is a waste of time, smokers get it, you think they're gross and unhealthy, they just don't care. There are plenty of awesome people in the world who smoke there's no need to insult them and treat them rudely just because they like the stimulation they get from smoking. ...as long as they're considerate, i feel like I have to repeat that.

+Alex Huber I agree 100% with you. 100 fucking PERCENT! =D I'm not a smoker anymore but it only made me want to smoke more when people would throw their little hissy fits. In America where we are supped to be free smokers have a right too and we shouldn't have to go hide in some alley to smoke a cigg. Also all the smokers that I met (Because we are/where forced into small cages to smoke a cigg and are pretty much forced into talking to each other) where all really great people to talk to. All down to earth and mellow people. If non smokers didn't judge so harshly at smokers they would probably be able to make a pretty cool friend.

actually, second hand smoke is 10 times worse then what your putting into your body, I don't agree with people bashing, but at the same time people that do smoke alcan either go to a diffrent room or stop all together.

I know this is somewhat older, but I'm curious--what about e-cigarettes now? They aren't exactly like cigarettes, they can be nicotine-free, etc. And considering how popular they are in cities like Dallas, I'm wondering if they've caught on in Seoul. I never smoked regularly because I treasure my cilia. I have enough problems clearing mucus and the few times I've had like, a cigar I've had trouble clearing my throat the next day. That, and smoking kills your tastebuds. Like you lose 60-70% of your sense of taste, and your sense of smell. That's my biggest problem--and I suppose for simon/martina it would be a big deal too, since you guys love food(I love food too, high five!) and I would HATE to suddenly not be able to taste things as well.

I've never understood banning smoking in bars. Like, sorry for slowly, fractionally poisoning you while you guzzle another, far more efficient poison. My bad? I'm a (rather unabashed) smoker. I swear, I must have born to be one, because since I was a little girl, I remember thinking that cigarettes smelled great. I quit for two years before resuming the habit. During that time period, my nose became far more sensitive, and the smell of cigarette smoke was truly foul. Having been on both sides now (twice), my opinion on this has always remained the same: It's private property, so let the business owners decide. Then I can decide whether or not I frequent them. That said, having been a smoker, even when I quit for two years, I'd still let people smoke in my car, my home etc. I never wanted to be that person that criticized or passed judgment, because the stigma around smoking is exhausting, misguidedly encouraged and hypocritical as hell. I've been told off for smoking by fat people, by alcoholics, by people who have bad hygiene, etc. From a smoker's perspective, there's an underlying irony that non-smokers typically cannot see: If you're overweight, why are you lecturing me on health issues? If you're an alcoholic, should you really be one to criticize "poisoning" myself and/or those surrounding me? If you have bad hygiene, can you really complain about how I smell? The "overweight and lecturing" one particularly bothers me, mostly due to its saturation and apparent separation from the issue of smoking. If you tell me I smell bad, I'm going to tell you that you look bad and assume that we were both pointing out the obvious. Maybe next time they'll think before they speak to a stranger. Besides, if it's two in the morning and I'm at IHOP, I'm assuming that everyone there (including staff) is a.) unconcerned about their health/diet, b.) drunk, and c.) likely smells pretty poorly. Let me smoke my god damned cigarette, please; we've all given up on ourselves around here.

Omg i can't agree more with you, im an asian girl in my 20s been smoking for the last 11 years with (i believe) a good smoking manner (always sticks to smoking areas, etc) even my family could verify this but only to get judged or criticize by bunch of people for many ridiculous reason that didn't even related to the smoking activity itself.

Well, I gave the drinking example specifically in the contexts of bars and alcoholics. If you don't drink, don't smoke, eat healthy, etc, none of the examples I gave really apply to you. I've no right to smoke in your car, nor would I want to if it made you uncomfortable. I think in a restaurant or a bar, it is reasonable to have a smokers' section and a non-smokers' section so people can decide for themselves. Drifting smoke in that context seems doubtful to reach concentrations above the smog levels we experience by stepping outdoors.

When I'm smoking, I always make sure to step away from doorways, hold my breath when I'm walking and passing people, and wait to light up until after children pass by. I'm so careful that I've never been told off by someone for *where* I'm smoking; I've only been told off for smoking as my own personal choice. I don't smoke in non-smokers' cars; I ask people where I can smoke when I visit their homes and how they would like me to dispose of the butts. IMO, all I'm asking for is the same extension of manners/courtesy in return.

If I met that person, sure, but who doesn't know anymore? It's on the packs; it's in the ads; we learn about it in school; some countries even put gross health pictures on the packs... I'd be shocked to meet a fully grown adult that wasn't aware. Maybe a kid, but I'd never allow a kid to smoke, anyway.

As a smoker I have to say I feel this witch-hunt going on for smokers these days is just ridiculous. It's fine I can understand that it's not allowed inside restaurants or shops and stuff, but when I'm sitting in the outside serving area of a pub, where it is completely legal to smoke (at least in my country) and someone actually comes up to me and asks me to move because I'm smoking then I must admit I take issue.

Like Simon and Martina said so well in their blog: "Smokers are making the choice to breathe in smoke, and they’re making the choice for us as well. If you want to smoke, fine, by all means do so, but please don’t make me smoke with you. Smoke in your home, in your car, in your own privacy."

Some people, myself included, actually get migraines from people smoking around us. But aside from that, some smokers do not care about the health problems they cause other people with their smoking even for their own family & friends. One of my former best friend's parents, both of them, were the 1-2 pack a day smokers. They would smoke in their apartment with all of the windows & doors closed so it trapped the smell which was literally on everything in there. Which was endangering their three children & anyone else that ever came to visit them. Not only that but you could literally walk in there for all of 20 seconds & come out smelling like an ash tray. All of their belongings even when taken out of the apartment smelled like an ash tray. If she came over to my house, which was preferable to me having a hard time breathing at her place, I would have to febreeze the shit out of everything because it was that infectious. Her parents would even smoke in the car with all of the windows up & one time when I was in the car with them, it was announced on the radio that it was now illegal to smoke in a car with children - they were smoking at the time & wouldn't stop complaining about it.

I get that some people are not fond of smoking but that's an individual choice. You can't shame someone into not smoking. I like EYK but as a smoker, that's my choice to smoke and your resentment towards smoking has nothing to do with my choice to smoke so stop.

Let me copy and paste commenter Shadowsong's reply to a similar comment like yours. Like Simon and Martina said so well in their blog: "Smokers are making the choice to breathe in smoke, and they’re making the choice for us as well. If you want to smoke, fine, by all means do so, but please don’t make me smoke with you. Smoke in your home, in your car, in your own privacy." Let me repeat a quote so you understand, "If you want to smoke, fine, by all means do so, but please don’t make me smoke with you." And you're right, their resentment towards smoking has nothing to do with your choice, it was YOUR choice. But what about others choices? Like what Martina said in the video "You have the choice of having a filter, to filter out your cigarette smoke and then you blow your full force 2nd hand smoke into my face, thus removing my choice. I want to breathe clean air but you've taken it from me." I dont get you Tal P, they did say in their blog that they are fine with someone smoking as long as they don't do it when others are around and thus not affecting anybody but themselves. You won't call out someone for smoking in front of your child (like you said "shame someone into not smoking"? That's pretty neat huh, give them cancer in such a young age (and it wasn't the childs choice). See all dem choices? So why you so defensive? Do you smoke in front of others and take away their choices hmmmmm?

I can kinda get what you are saying since I am allergic to large amounts of cig smoke. But one whole side of my family smoked for the longest time, till they quit many years ago and now I am married to a smoker, tho I do not smoke. I hear people tell me I am killing myself being with him and I should make him quit, but it is an addiction like alcohol can be and I can't just be forceful on something like that. I have talked to him about quitting but it is something he has to be willing to do, though recently with the ecigs out he has been thinking about trying those since they are cheaper and since it is vapor instead of smoke it would keep the smokey smell out of the house, and he would not have to worry if he accidentally blows the smoke my direction or our dog's. Also, just him smoking does not bother me, unlike if I have to go to his parents house where everyone smokes, then I fill my throat closing and have a hard time breathing. With the new laws in the state we live in, in the US, he has had to quit smoking in certain areas and he has actually cut back from a pack a day to half a pack to 3/4.

I used to be a social smoker when me and my fiance first started dating, he was a smoker too, it didn't last long cause I could feel all the chemicals in my body and I felt dirty all the time. Plus, I'm prone to panic attacks and I felt them getting worse. The only thing I still do is the way you breathe from smoking, it's good for stress. Worst thing I ever did was smoke and stopping is the best. I hate being around smokers now, I feel like I'm choking.
