For my family size of 3 with occasional family gatherings, Class III and a side gas powered Blackstone Griddle has been working perfectly. Regardless size, you cannot go wrong with Kamado Joe grill. One my best purchases I've ever made for life. I purchased Weber grills many years back, and after the Kamado Joe with the side Blackstone griddle, I had to dispose all Weber grills. The flavor and the charcoal heat source is amazingly easy to control once you get used to it. So much fun, and it's so efficient. After use, we always throw sweet potatoes and potatoes to the charcoal and closed the air, and we have the treat using the exhausting charcoal heats to avoid the heat waste. ;-)

I only have a Classic III. The Big Joe is definitely cool, but two things I dont think you mentioned that are factors for me: the Big Joe has a larger activation barrier. What I mean is that I am much more likely to fire up the Classic for just a side dish or a couple burgers. Big Joe-no way its worth the time to fire it up for little stuff. The second reason: I dont want to further tempt myself to eat meat all the time. I value the limits the Classic puts on me and the effects that could have on my health. Lastly, I’d rather have two Classics than one Big Joe. That level of granularity appeals to me. You could have the rotis going on one and sides in the other. Two seems more flexible than one.

I understand what your are saying about the economics and efficiency, But I think you can’t go wrong buying the most you can afford. I had a bunch of guests for Independence Day weekend and tried to cook 15# of chicken wings on my Vision kamado which is the same size as BGE L and Joe Classic…almost had wings falling off and it took way too long. I had several hangry guests by the time dinner was served. This convinced me that the Big Joe or BGE XL was needed and I’ll keep the Vision for smaller cooks. I’m selling my 22 year old offset smoker which has been great, but Big Joe 3 arrives next week so time to move on.
@SmokingDadBBQ Жыл бұрын
congrats on your new Joe... the sloroller gives you the entire grill space which makes either model seem larger. when i had a large BGE it too was 18" just like the classic but the plate setter was 15" so managing the hot spots reduced the useable grill space to about the same as a medium egg. one thing i noticed on KJ is how much more i could fit on the same dimensions

Great comparison review. I’m upgrading from medium BGE I have had for 8 years and honestly is just too small. Although the kids have all moved out, I do like cooking more than less meat when I go to the effort. I think the 4” extra for Big Joe 3 is not necessary for me, and I would not cook sides on it. However not having the slow roller seems like a disadvantage on the Classic Joe. (Understand you can add it for $250.). I also have a Traegar 1300 Timberline at the other house and love the convenience, even though everyone prefers the true smoke flavor from the BGE. I saw your review of the Konnect Joe and was thinking maybe this was a good compromise. My concerns on that choice is the lack of slow roller and also smaller size. (It’s still not clear to me what size the Konnect Joe most compares to in the non electronic Kamado Joes.). I know you have them all, and it’s always hard to say, but if you were going to pick one, and money is NOT the driver, what would you pick for someone like us? Always appreciate your input.

I am loving these comparison videos. I have a suggestion for another one. Can you compare the airflow of Joe Jr vs. classic and big Joe (without the Slo Roller). I at times I cook small boston butts and brisket-flats and these meats can fit both my Joe Jr. and classic. My gut feeling is even if I cook them at the same temperature, classic will probably have a better airflow compared to Jr, hence, the flavors will be better. But that is just my guess. Who knows, I might be completely wrong and Joe Jr. might have better airflow. With Joe Jr. prices going down a little bit in the last few months, I feel a lot of people have gotten a Jr. recently. So this video might be a useful one for many smokers.

Of those two, the Big Joe is the proper choice. The two negatives I'd give it are: 1. If you're just throwing on like 2 burgers or something you're going to feel really silly considering how much space you're wasting 2. Its price is ridiculous... but I would say this about KJ in general. My 22" kamado (which includes the Slow N Sear Platinum bundle of the Slow N Sear, EasySpin grate, and Drip N Griddle pan, which sells separately for like $280 or something) plus all the Kickash accessories for it - including the Kickash Divider I've never even used - costed me the same as an 18" Classic III, and the Big Joe is about $700 more than that. When you get to the price tier that the Big Joe III sits at, you may as well consider real premium options like the Komodo Kamado lineup.

you can fit a large brisket (17lbs) on the classic with some creativity (drape it over wood chunks for example) and the raised grid accessory adds a lot of useable space. I prefer the big joe as it makes full meal cooking much easier but for 3 people the classic i think could manage just fine

Great information ... It sounded like you indirectly mentioned one other con of the Big Joe 3 ... The space and real estate it would require! For some that won't be an issue, but for someone who perhaps has a small deck for example, the size differences between the two might be a consideration. I did like the idea about the Joe Jr for sides. Perhaps the Classic 3 maybe a great addition if they already own a Joe Jr inside of jumping up to the Big Joe 3?

I think you just explained why I have such a difficult time keeping a stable temp on my kamado komodo. It is very well insulated. At 700 I can put my hand on the top and it only feels warm to the touch
@SmokingDadBBQ3 жыл бұрын
yes this is true of the broil king keg, blaze and even the summit to some extent which are more efficient at the cost of smoke taste / rings compared to the series 3

James, awesome video as usual! Quick question, one thing you didn't mention was the weight of the BJ3 vs the Classic3. I tend to move my current BGE XL around to different areas of the yard depending on weather and it is tedious. I have looked up the weight differences between the two and it's not insignificant. Would love some more feedback on how easily the BJ3 can moved around and its' mobility in general.

the cart rolls well, i have no problem moving it around on my own... if you need to lift it thats a different story as its something like 450lbs

Thanks for this video and all of them you have done in the past. All of your info has helped with my kamado growth. I have the classic I for under a year and love it. The model III looks amazing. Planning on to put in an outdoor kitchen but wondering the diameter of the Big Joe base. I reached out to Kamado Joe and didn’t hear back.

I am doing a 29” space in my cut out. if you search table plans you can find the diameter if doing a circular cut out

1) James, what are your thoughts on using a chimney starter in place of a grill torch to get your coals up up temperature quickly? Do you think there is a danger of cracking your fire box if you dump the hot coals from the chimney directly into the basket? 2) You hinted at it, but if you don't have to buy a pit controller for the BJ3, the difference in price between it and the CJ3 becomes less punishing.

I use a chimney in the summer. just not the dead of winter when the ceramics are ice cold

You forgot that the accessories for the big joe are more expensive. I bought my Classic II because I was not all in on being a replacement for my gasser and being my primary grill. I have a family of five and if I had to do it all over again I would go with the classic size. If the price difference was 200-300. I would have gone big but it’s not.
@SmokingDadBBQ3 жыл бұрын
you’re right. each accessory is $20-50 more depending on the accessory. the classic is a very capable and a great value

This is a 'point in time' comment for sure... but worth noting that Big Joe 3s are severely backordered. If you decide on the Big Joe 3 you may have a longer wait before it arrives!

I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and just now subbed... man I thought I was subbed already. I have a icon pro I got for free but an looking to upgrade because my fire box is cracked and this grill was rusted out when I got it so efficiency is terrible. You have me sold on the joes I love the set up. I can’t imagine what I could do if I had a grill that was worth a darn.

Hey there, Great informational review, love your sincere and rational approach to each model . Question, what is the interior diameter of the classic and big Joe? the Big Joe's big price , is it partially due to the extra accessories that come "With" the smoker or are there just more available "after purchase " accessories. THANKS.

Given that a Brisket has to rest for hours after you take it off, the fact that you can't fit anything else on at the same time on the classic isn't much of a drawback. You can easily put more on afterwards. Also, when you want to cook multiple things you often want multiple temps (sometimes even with one thing). That's why I'm a Classic + Jr. fan. I admittedly haven't had a big joe or equivalent but when I'm entertaining, my pair of grills has always seemed more than enough and it's cheaper.

with brisket you can. with ribs and pulled pork the rest time is a little short

The only way you’re getting 5 spare or Babybacks on that Classic Joe III is if they come from a squirrel. 18 inches way too small for anything and $2500 on Big Joe is hard sell to wife. Settled for 22 in Kettle Joe instead. Happy with purchase.

this is my IG post showing three - instagram.com/p/B2J429TB68-/? Don't have one with the extender but it sits on top and holds two more

@@SmokingDadBBQ ha! I stand corrected! It’s possible! But I still stand by my position (though exaggerated for laughs). Until I saw the Classic III in person, I thought it was much larger. Wish they had a size in between 18 & 24 in Ceramic. 22 in Kamado @ $1800 -$2k is sweet spot imo.

I’m really torn on adding a second classic vs a big joe. I already have a lot of accessories for the classic. I usually don’t find that I need extra room with the exception of a few things I cook that would be simpler to just throw on a big joe.
@SmokingDadBBQ3 жыл бұрын
I had that setup at one point (two classics). it is so nice have the same accessories for each. there is nothing I couldn’t pull off with that setup

How times have changed. It's the middle of 2023 ans the average price of the Big Joe 3 is $2999 USD. Great sales can be had, however. You just need to be vigilant. I saw it on sale for $1999 once.

If you had the choice between having a classic 1 and a classic 3, or just the big joe 3. Which way would you go.

for me (my personal taste) big joe 3, best Kamado style grill i have ever used .... i used to have two classic 3's as the idea was to share the same accessories (which is true) but the big joe gets my vote

I don't see any email listed for you, so here it is. I purchase the classic 3 and will take possession this upcoming weekend. What would you recommend for a first time KJ user? Something simple but good. I really want to impress my wife.

I really appreciate all your videos. I really want to get into some cooking on a Kamado style cooker. I’m kinda hesitant, they aren’t cheap, and I want to make sure I’ll use it enough. I don’t always have the time to do such long cooks, but man does the food look good. I saw a 24” Louisiana Kamado at Costco for $600. I know it’s not quite what the Kamado Joe is, but it’s a 24” Kamado for $600. It does have some nice features, and I think I would get it over the BGE, but I’m wondering if I will buy it and want the KJ. Then I worry that if I spend the $2400 for the KJ that I won’t get the use out of it. Thinking if I could put the slow roller from KJ in the Louisiana that I would be set up pretty good.
@SmokingDadBBQ3 жыл бұрын
i would look at a series 1 joe if you are on the fence ... that way all accessories are potential (like soapstone, sloroller, joetisserie etc.) without needing commit to a 2k purchase now
@JWFX43 жыл бұрын
I didn’t think you could use the slow roller in the series one due to height? Or is it just that the series 3 cooks better because of the height?
@DanDaciuk3 жыл бұрын
Sadly, the grill extender doesnt fit when used in conjunction with the slo roller on the Classic 2.
@SmokingDadBBQ3 жыл бұрын
no thats a series 3 thing where it is 4" taller and does work with the sloroller
