Two of my favorite actors. Fred MacMurray and Ann Baxter. Heart warming story. And of course Burl Ives singing. I grew up on movies like this. Drive-in movies, Saturday afternoon matinee. Admission 50 cents. Popcorn 15 cents with real butter. Soft drinks 10 cents and candy 5 cents. And great hot dogs. Two movies, a cartoon, news reel and coming attractions.

A beautiful movie I stumbled upon, in my grief loosing my father today. A reunion in heaven, my mother and father together again. Married 65 glorious years. Two old dairy farmers, who raised us five kids on a dairy farm. My precious mum , was a excellent horse rider. From the age of 5, would ride a horse to and from school each day.

This movie is wonderful! So many good things to say about it. Great story and acting. The music alone, beautiful ballads sung by Burl Ives. Heart warming story line. You really get a feel about cowboys and their love and respect for horses. You will enjoy this movie a lot and always be happy you chose to watch it.

So ein wunderbares starkes wildes Tier. Dann kam der Mensch und wollte es mal wieder haben. Ein Elend. So wurde es gezähmt und zum menschlichen Gefährten umtrainiert. Mir hat der Hengst wild besser gefallen.

I agree with everything you said, except most cowboys did not love and respect their horses. The ones that did, had a special bond with their horse. Nowadays, the smart people break their horses gently, and get them over one fear at a time and build on that. If broke right, you end up with an animal that trust you and bonds to you much like a good dog does.

Beautiful voice of Mr Ives. The earliest of films I have seen him. The ending of the movie reminds me of a film made in the 90s, Black Beauty. A horse passed off to different owners and neglected. But finally found by accident by a former stable boy and now grown up and reunited with his beloved horse.

I love this, thank you for posting, but only thing that ruined it was the fact other music was made over the original song sung before or at the campfire. I used to own the book Smoky by Will James, fact is I had two of them, read them often. How I miss reading them, but they were lost many years ago and I haven’t been able to find them anywhere. Fact is, I had many books I used to read, I’d rather read books than play games on my computer. Technology is becoming overrated and irresponsible with people ….👍❤️🙏🏼

That's how the world was in Idaho when I was young. Many cowboys, packers, and wranglers were born in the late 1800s, and WWII had just ended. Electricity lines had not yet extended very far from towns to rural farms/ranches, and there were no such things as horse trailers and 4x4 pickups in those days. At the time, Idaho Power had a government program whose sole purpose was getting electricity to the more rural ranches. There were tractors and hay balers, but many farmers/ranchers still used horses to mow and Mormon Derricks to stack hay. We even used horse-drawn wagons when we picked up baled hay in the pastures and then stacked it near the barn. At the time, Idaho's population was just over 300,000. Now, there are that many folks in just the Treasure Valley. "Smokey" brought back a lot of memories for me...

I am so very very impressed with this I am truly having hard time to quit looking at to just WOWED.. I CAN'T believe this is second first time to have ANY POSITIVE visual for sure watching undoubtedly, but Mr Ives and the sound track I might have just been to young to of been watching but just listen/hearing but watching it truly is a time capsule MASTERPIECE ever thing the visuals 🤯 the coloring "Technicolor quality.😳🤯 Up to point of horse your looking for walks up to you and nudges you like WTF BRO FINALLY FOUND YA' and got rejected Well That was writer's block, not production creativity at such early production time capsule the sounds 'in back ground. and I have seen so much westerns I mean 🤯 even back to back still real tough to type text EXCEPTIONALLY EXCELLENT PRODUCTION great story (mostly) excellently put together, I am 58 y o western raised Rocky Mountain Westerner clean through modernly undomesticated western man. Even with what I hope is KZbinr not actually over original sound track . Because this was lining up to all time best's. like Lonesome Dove, Buffalo Girls, Sons Katy Elder, 310 Yuma "Ford", Rio Bravo . But took a real weak writer's crampon at # HELLO DIP+💩🦄🐓🍭🌬️⛄🌈🙊 OTHERWISE rock solid world class classic i can't fathom how this is undoubtedly first time again to watch but damn sure sounds so Mr. Ives so young, Quality line up.. BUTT that stomping your other brother too WHO "R" YOU writer wetting, crampon stinging🎈🌬️🦄🐓🍭☃️🌈🌬️🦩🦨🪱 damn near ruined a damn fine Ives' appearances I just watched twice BRAVO 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.... This movie shows the utter brutality that humans have toward animals. Rodeo is an awful and cruel spectacle sport that treats animals in a horrific fashion. It can be instructive to show the viewer the cruelty behind this spectacle, as well as the cowboy/ranching life, but it should not be presented as “family entertainment”. It is really a documentary of the terribly sad plight of horses in the old west.
