I watched a few videos demoing Smooth Operator and no one else brought up the distortion issue. Nice that Baby Audio added a high res mode to get rid of it. Some did mention the added harmonics but they just don't see it as a bad thing. It's sort of like just the character that this plugin gives to the sound. Something I wanted to bring up earlier in the original review: I don't agree with the assertion that "spectral dynamics is not needed to make great records because records of the past never used it". One could have made a similar assertion when FET compressors appeared (in contrast to opto-compressors). I understand that the point you were making was that spectral dynamic processing is not absolutely necessary to make a great sound. At the same time, I also think that every tool that helps address an issue can and should be used. Furthermore, a tool that can add some creativity is also recommended. After all, compressors were originally used as more of a utilitarian tool and now can used as a creative tool. (Edit: I just heard you did address it in your way =] ) All that said, it's good that developers do respond to issues. For instance - and yes, I know you have issues with this particular company - when Waves issued last year their take of the Abbey Road signature RS124 compressor, several individuals pointed out an issue that did not reflect the characteristics of the original. A month or so later, they issued an update addressing it and it was much better. And finally, I am a champion of having as many different opinions on tools as possible, especially when you know the position of the reviewer. You have made it very clear that you prefer hardware over software whenever possible, though you are not opposed to it if it helps to address issues in a clear and consistent way. And it's great to hear your side of things because I treat it like a data set for my own analysis, if you like. And it's great to hear from someone else who perhaps champions ITB more or is content with not having a studio filled with hardware. So all in all, we are contributing to making better sounds =]
@Phishstaebchen3 жыл бұрын
Nowadays there are also many digital plugins and synthesizers that can produce different frequencies than real physical instruments. I think that's also why you can't compare it with the past. You have to be much more selective in your processing.

Baby Audio are now a company I would go to, even though I've never heard of them before. It's so funny that most companies don't seem to get that upsetting their userbase will make them lose it and in turn caring for their products and users will be able to even create a userbase for them through videos like this one here. Oh Waves, are you hearing me and will finally stop making us pay multiple times for our products? ;)

This is the only channel I go to for REAL reviews. The other reviewers seem to say "Hey, check out this plugin! Here's my 'review' and there's a link below to buy it. It's an affiliate link." Often, the software is garbage, and my money is gone. Those are not "reviews" those are "promotions" and it is annoying. But you, my friend, give fair critiques, point out issues, and let us decide. Also, thank you for as hard on Unison as the rest of us are. So farm they make poor products, in my opinion.

Thanks for finding this issue and pointing it out. It's great to see a company listen to experienced users and fix problems with their tools. And any chance you'll be looking at some of Cherry Audio's incredibly cheap classic synth emulations? I'm not sure what gear you have access to in order to make clear comparisons but they seem to be getting high praise from some people who have used the original hardware. The harshest criticism I can find anywhere so far is that for a couple of the synths there are much more expensive emulations that might be a tiny bit more accurate according to some users, but then other high priced emulations are deemed inferior. I suppose at the price point it's hard to complain; it's nice for a low budget novice like me to see a company set prices that tempt impulse buys from everyone on what seem to be quality instruments.
