How odd. I’d always assumed Resolve’s timeline caching was intelligent enough to pre-render the timeline “as seen” ie with all the compositing etc, rather than just pre-rendering the individual clips. This is a very useful tip to know, thank you.

Thank you for this great video. But if you are actively editing the clips as a multicam and switching back and forth between camera angles instead of playing all the clips at once you would have to keep opening the compound clip to edit right? That seems very time consuming. Or is this meant to be more for reviewing the playback after editing?

It helps tremendously. Once you start using heavy duty graphic transitions or noise reduced clips with a lot of grouped color nodes with their own effects, things become extremely painful very quickly. The best thing I've found so far is to compound certain parts of your timeline and then cache / render. If needed you can also use the 'Render In Place' function (right click to see the menu prompt panel) or the Quick Export which is under the File menu in macOS. Using those you can quickly export a tiny section or just a clip to see how a scene might look at normal playback speed.

Well, Resolve could still render and cache the "mixed' 5-file stack (and discard that cache, or rebuild it from a partial cache of lower mixed files, if a top file is changed). Why doesn't it do it automatically instead of relying on compound clips?
@changein3d
@changein3d Жыл бұрын
I think it's because every file is treated as an individual object. That means you can edit one video or text, and the others stay pre-rendered as they are. In a compound clip, they all get merged to the only visible output.

@@Rrroarr Yeah, like a precomp in AE. And it isn't that comfortable to edit a section of your AE timeline when it's detached from the main timeline. But, if that's what you gotta do to reach smooth workflow? Then, whatever it takes. I just hope Davinci users don't end up with clusters of Compound Clips... I wonder if many users experience slow worflow in Davinci in general...

I bought your course. It’s really fantastic thank you! One question that has never been covered by anyone I have. I work with many timelines in premier. I am able to simply drag one clip into another timeline this keeps me very organized as I usually edit long videos with hindered of clips. Is there a way to do the same in DaVinci, other then clicking in a time line, copy, click on 2nd timeline and paste? Seems there are so many steps compared to a drag in premier. Thanks and please keep up the great work!

This method doesn't work for me (version 18.6.6). I have a two minute 1920x1080 HD, 30fps timeline where the majority of it has at least 3 or 4 stacked clips (actually only photos) and a couple of places where there is as many as 10 stacked clips. I put the entire timeline in a compound clip, turned on all caching options and waited until the timeline finished caching (solid blue line across the top of the entire timeline). Playback is at best 20 fps (so playback is still very choppy). One interesting thing is that I have a couple of seconds at the beginning and end of the timeline that are simply a solid black clip and those clips also only playback at around 20 fps. I've been battling this issue for over a week, watched probably a couple dozen KZbin videos on caching and none have provided a solution for me (unfortunately, including this one). I have six other timelines in my project, none of which have more than 3 stacked clips (again photos), and all for them playback at 30 fps when fully rendered (and without placing them in a compound clip). So I don't think it is my system or setup. The only way I found to see a clean playback of this particular timeline is to render it (or a portion of it) out to a file on the Deliver Page. However, this not a very efficient workflow. I'm fairly new to DR and would really like to figure this issue out.

Possibly being very dense here but what happens if you want to change a lot of clips - timing or colour, for instance -all on the same timeline. Easy thing to do is to make a compound clip and then alter, whatever, but does this alteration persist if you de-compound back to the separate clips?
@Rrroarr

The simplest way to solve this is right click your clip then go to "clip attributes" then check 24 frames per second instead of the 30 frames per second which is the default of iphones. You will find out that it will get rid of the lag almost instantly.

Blackmagic needs to fix this. Even the FCP7 days, if you rendered your timeline, it played back perfectly. You didn't have to do a nest or compound clip ... which for me working in feature films is just a no go. It should be once you render your timeline it plays rock solid. I can't tell you how many times the director or even clients have come into my suite to view something impromptu and I had lagging and skipping with the blue line rendered. Frustrating and embarrassing when the director asks why is it skipping and I have to say "I don't know...".

At least in my experience it all has to do with the Windows Version of Resolve - I am using the free version in both cases - under Windows my CPU jumpes to 100% as soon as I start editing and even the cursor begins to lag extremely giving me idk 1-2 FPS until the edit is done... It's almost unuseable ... I already have the resolution set to quarter of 4K. I tried building my hackintosh - on the SAME PC with the free version of Resolve for Mac I can now edit 4K in full resolution without any problems while my PC stays pretty silent. It's just bonkers to me and I never see anyone talking about it. So is there anyone out there with similar experiences? Maybe try it with friends MacBook which might even be less powerful than your PC - it will probably work better than on your powerful PC. I to this day do not completely grasp why this is I mean optimisation of course but the difference is night and day so that I even think black magic might even have activated using the GPU on the free version of Resolve on Mac by accident or sth. I do not understand it at all.
