Using an Innovative Silicone Tool to Vacuum Form an RC Car Body

In this episode of Making Things with Milo, Milo takes on vacuum forming an RC car body which presents an interesting challenge. Due to the undercuts present in the shape of the car body, a traditional rigid tool can't be used. Rather than redesigning the car body, Milo makes a flexible silicone mold that sits atop a rigid support structure.

I’ve been an RC enthusiast since 83 and had no idea how much work went into a lexan body. I’m a fan of DIY projects but don’t think I could pull that off. Well done

Nice work. I've been making V-Formed Polycarbonate bodies this way since 2019. I use the 60 duro hi-temp material and the aluminum-filled epoxy for the mandrel. Much better method for getting precise detail than a hard tool with little or no worry about undercuts, back drafts or difficulty removing parts from the male mold. Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely brilliant video Milo ! ; ) ...................... right up my alley so to speak. Watched it 3 times already! Vacuum forming and designing tooling plugs is what I do, been using very very expensive Vac-Cast epoxy resins with Aluminium powders in it for years, closest thing to real manufacturing tooling plugs ( or Bucks ) that the industry use. Negative draft angles have always been a major issue ................... until now! Very cleaver use of the 'Skin' over a solid form. A technique I'm sure I will now be using myself. I had no idea, nor did it occur to me that you could vacuum form over a silicon rubber. As I design prototype automotive headlights the methods you've just shown us, is sure to make my tasks so much easier, not to mention, the possibilities of vacuum forming shapes that otherwise wouldn't be possible. It was also very interesting to see you actually preparing the 'Free Form Air HT' @ 16:28, I tried one of your other products 'Free Form Sculpt' as demonstrated by Janessa in the following video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZvEZXmEhpmCoMk&lc The product was awful ! ................ I found it to be unworkable, my comments at the time were somewhat harsh, my frustration was very clear at the time. But 'Free Form Air HT' seems to be the product for me. We shall see ; ) My vacuum forming machine happens to be the Formech 508DT that you used for the demonstration, great machines. I also have a 20 Litre degassing system from 'Easy-Composites' in the UK, so all I need now are the materials ................... hopefully I can buy them through my regular Smooth-On supplier in Europe. Many thanks for these great tutorial videos guys, keep 'em coming ; ) TURK T4 Concepts

Thank you for this video! I have been trying to explain this process for making a vacuum forming buck like that to the people at the makerspace, but my description always fails to describe just how much detail and saved time this process produces. Also, I did not remember hearing you mention this, but you should file down the edges of the cutting tubes (either inside or outside) so that the act like a blade and punch through the material more easily. File down the inside if you want to keep the outside dimension accurate and vice versa for the in side dimensions.

In the late 1980s, I had a few of that specific RC car from Radio Shack, the Audi Quattro. I still have them. I also have the service manual with the electronic schematics, mechanical assembly drawings, etc. I really enjoyed this video showing the entire process of reproducing the main body. The original car was painted metallic silver and covered with paper decals so I assume the one in the video was stripped and prepped prior to the video. The original car window piece is black plastic so I thought it interesting to consider the possibility of using similar procedure to make a new clear polycarb window part for the original car body to expose the interior if anyone wished to model a new interior and driver figure.

I think there is a way for getting better detail in the body. That is making an inverse mold, so the external parts of the body goes against the mold walls. I mean, a concave mold. That way you'll have the best body detail outside and not inside. Tell me what you think of this. Regards and congratulations for your amazing work.

@vampcaff
@vampcaff Жыл бұрын
I use the aerosol version of this, the 200 mold release and i have to spray the crap out of my mold, i mean shiny, just before the point of puddling up. Also make sure your silicone is properly cured (not just set but final heat cure too) or else this release agent won't work. Honestly just use petroleum jelly, it never fails. Also talcom powder works ok but I've had it fail occasionally.
