I think the most revealing part of the lore is that the Miracle and the Twisted One don't seem to really be the same entity in the same way that Jesus is also God. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense for the Miracle to be jealous of the Twisted One. It seems The Miracle twisted and crunched the father around the tree just to be sadistic but then The Father became an object of worship in and of himself and, in the case of Laudes, arose more passion than the Miracle itself ever could. So The Miracle got assblasted and started torturing the people of Cvstodia even more.

it might because of Jibrael's POV. After all, it was entirely told by his side of the story and throughout your interaction with him as the loredumper, he might be terribly biased towards Laudes as we can hear the admiration when he tells you all about her. Even though he was released from his role as the messenger, he naively assume that Great Happiness awaits him as he ascends towards Dream to possibly meet Laudes again. Whether that happens or not, only the Miracle would know.

I'm with nazrin on this one in that's just Jibrael's opinion on events and he's clearly biased and bitter against the Miracle. It wouldn't make sense for the Miracle to get "jealous"...it's already created multiple other effigies to be worshiped like Socorro or the Lady of the Charred Visage...it wouldn't be jealous given it keeps creating these figures to be worshiped. The Miracle punished Laudes because she kind of went overboard. You're supposed to worship and revere these effigies...but not fall head over heels in love with them...the Miracle found a better use for all that passion since, let's face it, it was a bit wasted on a tree. Plus being jealous is very much a human emotion and I don't see much evidence that the Miracle thinks like a human or even cares less about emotions like that. Though I do wonder whether Laudes is released when she was. I mean, it's the Penitent One himself who makes the choice to do it. I believe she was created as a "last resort" to bring in an Apocalypse and a new beginning (ie: the Flood) but it's possible she wasn't supposed to be released...after all, the Penitent One's quest isn't lost so there'd be no need for her yet. It almost feels more like the PO stumbles onto this failsafe that he wasn't supposed to and then has to defeat what he released.

The Amanecidas and Laudes seems to be the Miracle's last resort if everything got way too fuck up on Cvstodia, and since the Penitent One was doing good enought on it's journey, Laudes was awaken to fight againts him, regardless of who died, it would have mark the end of and era in that land, by our hand as the Penitent One, or by her hand as the Amanecidas. In Resume, we can say that the Miracle is a caprichious bitch of a force that doesn't know what it wants, and likes to grand people's wishes in a way that fucks them up very hard >.>;

After playing the game again in spanish, I have fallen in love with this game all over again. Team 17 definitely has outdone themselves with not only the DLC but Roman Catholicism as a whole. Of course, SmoughTown has provided a descriptive narrative of the lore that still continues to captivate me. Love your videos, cant get enough of them!

Thanks for doing this video SmoughTown, just what I needed. For what its worth, I think an interesting point of this DLC is that by showing that the twisted one was paraded about and that devotion to it could lead to jealousy from the High wills and action from them, it makes me wonder if its setting up the future of the series in terms of the timeline after the true ending for the penitent one. That high emotion (maybe from Crisanta?) in relation to the "new father" penitent one maybe bring forth similar action from the High Wills, especially if it leads to the same possibility of bringing a new dawn that the Amencidias might have heralded. It may be that the jealousy of the High Wills was not just the devotion Lauds showed but also a possibility of a new world where worship of the twisted one was elevated over worship of the High Wills (or how the method of how the High Wills wished to be worshipped). That's correct. Amanecer means Dawn, but Amanecida or Amanecido is referred to someone who wakes up in the morning, so it is better translated as Awakened One

Nowdays to wake up would be translated as /levantarse/ (that can be translated to english as just stand/ing up lol)

The way I interpret this is as a conflict between different approaches to worship. Laudes represents worship as love and devotion, while the penitent one represents worship as guilt and self-sacrifice.

I'm a Spanish speaker, and I just wanted to correct a little error in your translation: The correct translation for "Amanecidas" would be something like "she-dawneds" "Dawn" would be "Amanecer". "Amanecidas" instead relates to women affected by the dawn.

I think my favorite comment to first come out of the Stir of Dawn boss fight videos was: "This was if Mary Magdalena got/wanted to get way too handsy with Jesus and God punished her by giving her superpowers" I do also think there's a bit of power behind the word "stir" in this sense, as in a way, she not only felt an intense stirring for the Twisted One, but in that long night, the creation of the Amanecida was created in the night up until dawn, a Stir(ring) of Dawn (with the Amanecidas translating directly to Dawn) , on top of the Apocalypse symbolism. (This is also why we shouldn't simp hard for Vtubers lest the High Will punishes us as well) Will you be also taking a look at Crisanta? I know you've briefly covered her in regards to the Penitent One, but I don't see much talk about her and I think she's a really interesting character, especially in relation to the ending

I still don't understand why the 'god' of this world is called 'The Miracle', when I've also heard the term 'High Will' used. One would think the god of this world would be referred to as the High Will, since that refers to an entity, rather than The Miracle, which refers to an action or event. Is there a reason for this, that the divine being is referred to only by what it does, rather than what it is; or is the High Will and The Miracle different things entirely?

It's interesting, I'm starting to see differences between spanish/english traslations. In the spanish version, Laudes before facing the penitent she says: "In exchange for my awakening, it orders me to put an end to your infamy purpose, penitent" "it's already dawn after the long night" when you defeat her: "My passion...that you were once gold, now return to my body" Even Escribar has an additional dialogue (I think): "I burn, from the inside out. And my smoke is a mist that blinds everything"

The miracle is possibly the most machiavellian villain, it puts a great punishment in the world, more than enough to be feared (attrition), loved (contrition) and respected (compulsion) but it doesn't plan to keep it forever as it would be left without followers. Just like when Escribar turned his throne due to the lack of faith and devotion in cvstodia, the miracle heed his plea turning Escribar into a mountain of ash that acted as bait for everyone who wanted riches and power, turning them into monsters in order to punish Cvstodia (the holy punishment that Crisanta wanted to protect). After many years of punishment, puts the penitent one to the challenge, in order to pay the guilt the world debts to the miracle, Why the penitent? Maybe he was the chosen one, maybe he was the last one that could do the challenge (that would explain why the miracle would always bring back him from the death) as the whole brotherhood of the silent sorrow was killed by the Anointed Legion. The Miracle initiates the age of the turned throne and all its tragedys, and also the one that puts the end of it using the penitent one. A god: unkillable and without any opposing force, the devil and god in the same position, equally pious and cruel: A divine will.

It was created in response to an honest plea from The Father for pain and suffering in the form of penance for all the wrong doings in the world. The Miracle was created to be a perfect torture device for humanity. It doesn't necessarily try to teach, it instead leave the lesson to be taught by the suffering it inflicts. The Penitent One gathers the guilt and sins of the entire world into himself to make a single vector for the Miracle's focus... Then he kills himself with the sword created by the Miracle to bring peace to those who feel guilt from sin... and cuts the connection between the world and The Miracle.

I have a weird thought. If the four Amanecidas represent the Four Horsemen, what if Laudes herself represents what follows the Four Horsemen? As it stands, the passage points out that after the Four Horsemen appear, Hades will accompany them (or at least the last horseman, Death) and that they will have the Authority over a fourth of the Earth. It's abit of a stretch, but perhaps "Hades" could refer to Laudes. Similar name, they're both the last ones following the procession of four before them.

Small theory: Maybe it’s just a stretch but the quote at the start of the game is anonymous. At one point in the game the Penitent One is referred to as Anonymous One. Maybe the quote at the start is one of the only things the Penitent One said before undergoing their penance of silence. I mean maybe it is a stretch, but their aren’t that many characters that are unknown by name. I mean characters talk about erasing the Penitent One’s name, so I feel like this is possible. Also the rising of sin goes well with the Penitent One’s purpose to collect all the guilt and sin within themself, and the rising of the sun goes well as it symbolizes a transition to a new phase. So it’s like the world can only transition to a new phase when the sin rises to a point that it can be destroyed within a single person.

Bit late to the party, but it's interesting to note that Laudes, much like angels in the bible, has faces pointing in multiple directions. Coupled with being a shining beacon of light due to the golden armor, I believe that Laudes was intended to not only have the four horsemen symbolism, but also be another form of angel for the Grievous Miracle.

I just want to adress something, the game says that Laudes Laudes moves the father "too much" in the eyes of the miracle. Lots of people interpreted this as the Miracle being jealous of the Twisted one, but it doesn't seems right, as the Miracle created the Twisted one and that being punished just for being too dedicated makes no sense (we're before the age of the ash pile, so the Miracle is not doing sh*t at this time).As you said, it is implied that Laudes was in love with the father ; love is forbidden for the members of the church, so this would make more sense. To me, what happen is that the high will blessed her devotion (the all weaving gold out her pores stuff) but the miracle trapped her and her clones, as a penence for having been in love with a holy figure. (My apologies for potential mistakes, english is not my first language)

I think it's quite possible. Her words in the "Brilliant Heart of Dawn" are borderline romantic (though it can be also interpreted as an excessive religious zeal). And when it comes to the jealousy, it's only Jibrael who speaks of it; since he was in love with Laudes, we cannot be sure if he is a reliable narrator.

Part of me wonders if the Miracle needed to end all of its past business in order to leave. It was created to give penance and pain to the world at the request of the Father. The High Wills gave it form to punish people. I wonder if so long as there were remnants of its past works the miracle would be unable to leave. Maybe the Penitent One had to tie up all the loose ends the Miracle left in order for the world to be freed. Also, something interesting is that they describe the birth of the 4 golden women as A Miracle. They don't say it was the will of the miracle that gave birth to the 4 other women, just that it was a miracle. I wonder if the creation of the four was something else. Could the miracle have been jealous because the birth of those extra beings was something alien but similar to itself?

Honestly the fate of Laudes feels like the absolute PETTIEST cruelty the Miracle inflicted on anybody in Cvstodia; it's just... such pointless dickery to someone who clearly had great passion and power inside her. The Miracle uses her as a kind of like, super guardian, but still... it feels like a waste. Though that is an echoing theme in Cvstodia... all this faith and devotion, gone to waste by being lavished on an unworthy ideal.

Fun fact: Jibrael could be another way of spelling Jibrīl, who was an archangel in the Islamic faith, known for being a middle man between God and humanity, as well as being a bearer of revelations. Much like Jibrael is in the game; acting as a middle man between the Amanecidas and the player, and they are some of the actors for the Miracle’s will. Not to mention, he also gives the player revelations; about the Amanecidas’ and what you need to do to follow the path you wish to follow. So… yeah, it could be that Jibrael is an archangel of sorts, both in name and in actions.

I'm curious as to why the Miracle seems to be the prime player. Please if I am wrong, let me know, but didn't the High Wills create the Miracle? Did they/it create the other...deities? Such as Jocinero? Is the Miracle bound by fate and that's why it saves the Penitent One (maybe against it's will) to end the current cycle? So the DLC is maybe the Miracle trying to circumvent this?

Yep. Music is banned. It's said in lore items that someone made a satire of the Mother of Churches. Basically a song that made fun of the Church. This was a big no no. So ALL Music was banned because of 1 dude who wrote 1 song. Cvstodians see pleasure akin to sin. So people off screen must've been Freaking the Fuck out when they heard a song that literally heralds the end of the world

Yeah, more so I feel, the Miracle is not a god that should be worshiped or appeased. But a god that should be overthrown or destroyed. A god that creates life only to demand it's suffering for even the smallest sin? Such sin that may not even be the fault of anyone? It makes me wish we could get a second game that lets the player fight what i think is the real enemy of this world. If we as the player could overthrow or kill the Miracle itself. Because honestly it seems like this world would be so much better off without such a malevolent god.

I disagree to me it seems like the Miracle is nothing more than a product of the people’s wants and desires. Remember a lot of these people ask to be punished, the Miracle isn’t this evil being that just does as it wishes. For the most part it reacts to humanity’s wants and desires it just so happens that these humans want to be punished. As far as I’m aware there’s not a single person in this game that regrets being punished by the Miracle or even hates it for punishing them. If anything they love the fact that their suffering which tells me that the Miracle only acts like this because it’s what the Humans of this world want it to be. At least that’s how interpreted it.

@@swordguy60 that is certainly one way of looking at it. However it calls into question, what teaching instill these beliefs of punishment and suffering are to be desired? Also, as we see in this explained in this video, that this woman loved the twisted one more than the miracle. So she is punished by it. And to me, any god that demands, that you love it more than anything or anyone else, is not a benevolent god. But a selfish one.

@@Atary77 Yet the lady shows no ill will towards the Miracle. In fact, she seems to completely embrace the role given to her. Just like every one else punished by the Miracle. To me the Miracle isn't good or bad, it's simply a being that was shaped by those who worship it. I truly believe that if Cvstodia wasn't a land filled with people who wanted to be punished the Miracle would appear and act completely differently. However, due to many Cvstodians borderline masochistic desire to be punished by a higher being the Miracle has become just that. A God that will punish those deemed to be sinful by the very rules the Cvstodians made for themselves.

@@swordguy60 With this in mind, I guess it comes back to what these people were teaching. Why they would preach that suffering and punishment are to be desired. Not just for a short period of time but for generations these teachings went on. Perhaps it really is people who are to blame. As humans can misinterpret and misunderstand. And we see this in the game as well as different orders claim to represent what they believe is the will of the Miracle. Much like how in Christianity there are many sects and different beliefs.

Gotta remember this is based off how Christianity was in Spain during a time period. In regards to liking the Twisted One more than the Miracle, there was a time when even icons of Christ were destroyed because that was considered an idol and not truly God. Many people in various time frames of Christianity were, whatever term you wish to use, brainwashed, provoked, etc that since humans are sinful by default, one needs to pay for it in one fashion or another in order to at least show God you are aware of this. Religion is complicated and this game is just highlighting it.
