I increased my budget by going to the cafe at work less. (really good food) the girl there asked me why I wasn't coming in as much and I was honest "Saving for an investment in PkMn cards." She thought that was pretty funny and we started talking, and now, she's my GF. WAY better than blowing $15 at the bar for a fake number, or spending $10+ for lunch every day. B-)

Back in 2012 I worked a part time job in high school and managed to get some first edition fossil/jungle/gym boxes for a few hundred dollars each, and I was trying to collect one of every sealed wotc box. I got distracted later by college and my career and im looking back now at the prices wishing I had the income to get more at the time, because wow these prices have increased so substantially. I wonder if I get back at it, if the prices will continue to increase. I've always liked sealed product. It'd be nice to finish the collection.

@smpratte hopefully you'll read this comment. I'm currently getting into investing in Pokemon cards. I'm currently a believer in holding cards long term 5-10 for big returns. I've been Currently buying ungraded nm-m cards in the lv.x and hg ss era because I believe they are vastly underpriced. I hold them in penny sleeve and toploader to preserve my collection atm. My collection has started to get a lot bigger and I'm wondering if it's worth getting cards graded by psa as a long term investment? The even bigger question is hypothetically if I were to have one of my cards be graded a 6 or a 7 psa, would it be worth trying to even get the card graded to begin with? Obviously I'm not looking to flip, but still, would long term it be of any benefit to spend the money get the cards graded rather than held ungraded in a penny sleeve and toploader? It's hard to judge some of my cards as psa is graded by a human and to one persons psa 8 is another's psa 6. I can definitely tell a good chunk of them are in fantastic condition but like I said before long term is the price I'm spending on getting them graded worth it? Sorry for such a long question and I hope you are able to respond or to anyone who comes across this comment who has advice please let me know. Thanks!

Does it makes sense in your opinion to buy lower PSA grades of the english base set 1st edition - like PSA 5-7? You believe they will also rise in price over years? Or the higher grades are still the best investing over time, even when they are pretty expensive to buy right now?

Your risk comment is incorrect in my mind. For example, when a student is on track to becoming a doctor what is the risk? The reward is that they become a doctor and get all the prizes that come with that, and if they don't become a doctor they will have received all that experience. In the same way, there are many options that allow you to have a very fulfilling life and take no more risk then what life would offer naturally. Then you counter your point with real world examples, there are many wealthy people who inherited their money and don't need to take risks and conceivably have much better lives then what the average person could live.
@YouSayBooyah4 жыл бұрын
To become a doctor, you pay a ton in tuition fees, no? Is that not a risk?
@jamesrichards34994 жыл бұрын
> when a student is on track to becoming a doctor what is the risk? Let's say they accumulated 100K in loans to become a Radiologist. In 10 years time, AIs will be 1000 times better at radiology than humans. Oops.
@vichash4 жыл бұрын
YouSayBooyah risk and cost are two different things. Buying food isn’t the risk of food poisoning, food cost money and food can poison you.
@vichash4 жыл бұрын
Michael Waddell just because someone starts something doesn’t mean they are entitled to the end result. Someone can drop out due to many reasons; not like the prospects, discovering greater opportunities, or finally being unable to meet the requirements. That is sunk cost, what has been paid and can’t be recovered. Sunk cost and risk are related but that’s due to the human condition.

I think sometimes you have to risk it and flip to get that extra income to make the purchase you want for long term. That’s what I do. But I course I’m also investing in my channel and side business. So the extra income from flipping helps. But it’s a risk too. It doesn’t always pan out. Tricky thing to do.
@gitusumbia4 жыл бұрын
I think if there is an easy flip for profit or you need to sell something to remain liquid then it makes sense.
@ZenturionXYZ4 жыл бұрын
R R yeah I don’t have an issue with flipping. I know SMPratte looks down on it quite a bit. But it’s just the nature of the beast there will always be flippers. As long as they aren’t scamming people then let it be. Personally I’d love to have a better position on vintage stuff but I just got back into Pokémon a little over a year ago and vintage maybe 6 months. I think I’ve racked up quite a bit of stuff considering the short time frame. I also wish I didn’t need to flip. I’d rather take the risk on a long term item than a flip if it was up to me.
@gitusumbia4 жыл бұрын
@@ZenturionXYZ I just started because the kid likes them and then they grew on me. So I figured I would try to collect some older ones. I am a rookie here and people may laugh but I kind of like the team rocket series. Not huge value like some others, but I will learn those with time. The only ones I have flipped were the cards in packages deals that were not my target card. Recently I got a 5 card 1st edition lot because I wanted one card in it. By the time I sell the others I will have got a 1st edition riachu psa 9 for close to free. Once again, only a $100 card, but I got to start somewhere
