The Post Apocalyptic Inventor Good luck with your plans! I like your structured approach to subjects. It is nice to have a hierarchical knowledge tree of different solutions to a problem or types of possible uses for a component. Makes for easy understanding, good recall and pleasant base for reasoning about circuits based on that knowledge. There is lot of stuff to know in electronics and if helps to organize it! By the way, I found out about your channel from the EEVblog forum.

Yeah you're absolutely right. The world of modern electronics is vast and it is very hard to get an overview. I know a lot of people who are professionals in electrical engineering and yet have no general knowledge about basic circuit topologies outside their particular field. I fought many years to acquire some general knowledge about electronics and I'm still working actively on structuring that knowledge. These videos are the result of that structuring process. The EEVblog Forum is a great place. It's the only Forum that I really like.

Great to know. However, I wonder if there is any new technology for AC to AC step down converter of higher wattage, like 3000 watts stepping down 230V to 120V. because the only ones that I know, are those with a very huge transformer which actually adds a heavy weight to the device, is there a lighter version.
@ThePostApocalypticInventor

Otiesh Francis Yes there are modern topologies which can be used for that. But it would be no direct conversion from AC --> AC, but it would be AC--->DC--> DC--->AC. First the 230 V grid voltage is rectified and charged to a capacitor. The capacitor is used as a DC voltage source for a full bridge converter. That converter operates at a switching frequency much higher than the grid frequency, so that a much smaller transformer can be used. The output voltage of the full bridge converter is a lower DC voltage. After that comes an Inverter circuit that again creates a 50/60 Hz AC ( with V_eff = 120 V) from the DC output voltage of the full bridge converter. The overall weight will be much lower, than that of an old 50/60 Hz transformer, but designing such a circuit is no work for beginners: Building a high power full bridge converter and a sine wave inverter are no simple task.

Thanks and I appreciate....If I may ask you one more question? I have a QSC plx2 3102 power amplifier rated at 120v and in my country we use 230v, the amplifier is of a switched mode power supply and I have tried to do a search on how I can convert its power from 120v to 230v and as told by many, it is not possible. could you have any info' on power amps that use the switched mode technology power supply.

I liked this tutorial but it didnt't help me much since i'm a high school student trying to know the basics of electricity circuits. I will very appreciate it if you could make a video for us beginners about diodes and their functions rather than these complex circuits. I'm subscribed to your page from now on and i hope to see some more educational videos like this. Thank you!
