Thanks for watching, everyone, and as a disclaimer, there will be pictures of the other Derfflinger class ships in my video on Lutzow; there are surprisingly few photos of a ship that was only in service for two years over a hundred years ago. Also, before anyone comments about the Scharnhorst class from 1935, they were officially designated battleships or schlachtschiff. In contrast, the Hindenburg was a Panzerkreuzer, a large cruiser or more common in English battlecruiser.

Good video and here a little addition. The temporary name of a new ship depended on whether an old ship was to be replaced or an additional ship was to be built. Here the old cruiser "Hertha" should be replaced. So the new Battlecruiser (german: Großer Kreuzer = big cruiser) was named "Ersatz Hertha" (= substitute Hertha) till it got the final name "Hindenburg".

Really like your content! Keep up the good work. Only one minor remark: try to prevent vocal fry. For the rest 100% quality content 👌🏻

Thanks for the comment. I have read comments in the past about vocal fry and how it grates on some ears. There are a number of things that contribute to this, whether it is the equipment I use and or the editing I do to try to slow myself down artificially to be more understandable, or how I speak. I'd much rather talk in a conversational tone and use my normal speaking voice rather than try to worry about vocal fry or any other vocal issue, and I have to be honest, it's very difficult to please everyone on the internet.

Last German battle cruisers were the 'Scharnhorst' and the 'Gneisenau'. They had been armed with 'only' 11 inch guns. On the other hand the 'Hindenburg', named after a (then) living person, is generally regarded as the best capital unit of the Great War. After it, in 1926, her famous namesake paid a visit to my hometown, to open a stadium named after him: the Hindenburg Kampfbahn. The stadium still exists. 👍♍

Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were Battleships...a bit lightly armed,but still Battleships. That whole Battlecruiser schtick comes from the british press...And from the fact that before WW2 nearly EVERY Capital ship faster 25knots was called a battlecruiser by the british...To me it is actually the best description because it can quite easiely end all discussions wether or not Hood was a fast Battleship or a battlecruiser for example

As Nashman said, They were battleships in everyway but firepower. They were as heavily armored as any WWI class battleship, a good portion still in service in WWII. Hood may have been the oddity for BC, as she was actually heavily armored, ALL accept for her deck, which was her downfall. The Scharnhorst class was ALWAYS mean to be upgraded to 15" guns. I would say, outside of Hood, commissioned in 1920, the last battlecruisers built, to me are the US Alaska-Class....although we never liked the term battlecruiser, so we called them Large cruisers or sometimes cruiser killer.....12" guns for than enough to take out an 8" gun heavy cruiser.

Do you see the Alaskas as battle cruisers? Thare is definitely a gray area whare the scharnhorst and Alaskas and Dunkirks kinda sit.
@NashmanNash Жыл бұрын
No..the Alaskas are simply overgrown cruisers...Designed to fight cruisers,build like cruisers.Put an Alaska vs a Dunkerque(Or better Strassbourgh) or a Scharnhorst and remove radar from the playing field,and you will see just what either of those two would do to an Alaska...@@robertstone9988

Good talk on this ship. Like all coal powered ships the speed dropped off when the stokers got tired, unlike the British oil-fired ships were you just opened the valves.
