I worked in a hobby shop in the UK and serviced dozens of these loco's, changing an armature could be done in around 10 minutes! No need to seperate the body from the underframe, the motor bogie simply unclips from the frame. Disconnect the wiring, remove the clip holding the gears in place, use a thin screwdriver to knock the wheels with the plastic gears from the axle and unclip the end plate (making sure not to lose the brushes and springs). Use the thin screwdriver to knock the small brass gear from the armature. Replace with a new armature and reassemble in reverse order. There should be a diode in one of the brown wires to the lights so the headlights only come on when the loco is running forward.
@Petemonster62 Жыл бұрын

From what I’ve seen on the “Sam’s Trains” YT channel, there were quite a few substandard Hornby models; this looks to be one of them. They should have used a modern chassis, like Atlas, Athearn, or Kato. BTW: that looks a lot like the “pancake” motors used by Tyco models, I wonder if the rotor from one of those would fit? Best bet would be to see if the body shell would fit something like an Athearn “blue box” F3/F7/FT as those British Diesels are almost all “covered wagons”, to use the American parlance. The interesting thing is that the British diesels were (usually) double-ended, whereas that was uncommon on U.S. roads; mostly we would either have a diesel at either end (of a passenger train), or a diesel on one end, and an unpowered “control cab” on the other, in those cases where the train set always travels from point A to B, and back, day after day (such as the Northeast Corridor.) That’s not to say the U.S. carriers didn’t have double-ended engines, they were just uncommon, and many were switcher units, such as the GE 44-toner, or the Alco C-415.

I have a multimeter, I'm just not super knowledgeable on what kind of numbers I should be looking for on each of the windings to test for shorts.
@oscar_charlie Жыл бұрын
Anything less than 1 ohm is basically a short. A good motor would be about 10-ish (check a few good ones to get a good idea of what to expect), and rotating it by hand should show the same value as the commutator switches windings. If you read 8 ohms but then you rotate the motor and you get a short or an open (anything over 200 ohms is basically an open for motors) then you have a bad winding.

The loco sidings at the front of the picture usually have at least one Class 37 stabled there - 37 516 - which was built in 1962, making the HSTs look like youthful 45 year olds...

Maybe it derails cause the wheels are out of guage from being removed???? Or the wires are somehow pulling on one of the trucks on turns???
@tommurphy4307 Жыл бұрын
weights are prolly missing...
@SMTMainline Жыл бұрын
@@tommurphy4307 Nope, yambo was correct: despite dismantling the rear wheels, the ones in the front were actually further out of gauge for some reason.

Hello Harrison, Happy new year. How are you. I enjoy watching your channel from Adelaide, South Australia. Do you use a NMRA gauge to check your wheels are in gauge? Is your track code 100 or something else?
@SMTMainline Жыл бұрын
As you suggested I used a gauge to check the distance on the wheels and the front ones were out of spec.

Didst thou know that there are DC brushless hobby motors (used in model planes). I dunno the details, but it appears as tho they are wired 3-phase into special converters. This is likely too sophisticated or expensive for the RR market, else it would've already appeared. Cheers.
@tommurphy4307 Жыл бұрын
kato and bachmann both make units with coreless power, but they are not multi-phase
@SMTMainline Жыл бұрын
I've been trying to understand that myself: I figure it might be the cost however DCC decoders already have to function as a rectifier so I don't think it would be that much more. Further more the performance and reliability would be improved.

I think the British Rail prototypes date back to the 1970's.

You can get replacement/upgrade kits that use the motor from a CD player.

Both Hornby and Lima made these in the Australian XPT livery, even though the XPT was not really a repainted Intercity 125..
