Two people have sex and an accident occurs, pregnancy. Because of that accident a life is at risk. The use of an organ is required in order to save, develop, grow, or sustain the life at stake. So how is it different when a kidney is required to save a life or a uterus is required to grow a life?” Pro-life response: This is one of the more “compelling” arguments for abortion. It was also well articulated but I think we get the gist here, right? This is an argument from analogy. For an argument from analogy to work the parallels must be…well…parallel in morally relevant ways. If they aren’t, then the analogy fails and the argument falls apart. Here are 4 morally relevant ways the car accident scenario and pregnancy ARE NOT PARALLEL… First, there’s a morally relevant difference between a car accident and pregnancy. Driving a car is NOT NATURALLY ordered towards the condition of having someone connected to you to live, but…sex is! If you need more details, ask your parents. Second, the car accident scenario involves the UNNATURAL use of body parts, whereas pregnancy involves the NATURAL use of body parts. The kidney inside your body is designed to be used for YOUR body. It doesn’t naturally belong in someone else’s body. However, a woman’s uterus is the NATURAL organ to gestate ANOTHER human being. That’s literally it’s job. Third, the analogy EQUATES the relationship between strangers with the relationship between mother and child. Do we really believe a mother has NO MORE responsibility for the welfare of her child than she has towards a total stranger? Finally, there’s a morally relevant difference between REFUSING to help and INTENTIONALLY killing. In the car accident scenario there are three options, help, not help, or kill. But in the case of pregnancy there’s just two options, help or kill. Abortion isn’t merely choosing not to help. It’s choosing to directly kill through poisoning or dismemberment. Well, in the car accident scenario you are not obligated to help, ALTHOUGH, it might be nice. In the case of pregnancy, YOU ARE OBLIGATED NOT TO KILL.

I used to be like her. Running off when she realized that she was going to have a harder time debating abortion when she faced the parallel to abolishing slavery is exactly what I would have done when I was pro life. The ‘bodily autonomy’ argument that she (and others) tried to argue - they really are arguing for ‘bodily inviolability’, which doesn’t exist, never has existed, and isn’t based in reality. Bodily autonomy does exist, however. The body (the human) inside another body (the mother, or owner of the womb) both have body autonomy. The mother cannot, however, abuse and harm the other body, even to the point of death, without infringing on the other body’s (the baby inside the womb) human rights. Their argument is that you (the government via law) cannot force the mother to care for the human inside her body, via her body, anymore that you can force someone to give a kidney for another to live. The difference is, the mother has to take malicious action to physically abuse, harm, or cause the death of the other body in her body.

As I assume you would consider sperm… but when the mother chooses to accept the possibility of sperm into her body, she forfeits her bodily ‘autonomy’ (which, it isn’t… it’s bodily ‘inviolability’, using your use and intent of the word…) 🙄

She needs to ponder this fact - No one can have 2 separate blood types. A child in the womb in most cases has a different blood type than the mother, and could potentially die in the womb should something cause the two blood types to mix. The child therefore has its own body, as the mother has her own body with their OWN blood types of important value. So the argument, "My body, my choice", is a moot point, because another person is involved who is unable to choose!

The "car crash" analogy is such a terrible analogy. I'm always a little surprised that people bring it up to defend abortion, and I'm always left wondering if they've even thought through their own analogy. The car crash analogy does not work because, at best, it establishes that a mother who has an abortion should be charged with manslaughter. The argument goes that even if you hit someone with your car, you cannot be compelled to donate your blood to save them, and that you have a choice to withhold that life-saving support. So to just play that out a little more, if I hit someone with a car and kill them, I get charged with manslaughter if I knew, or reasonably should have known that my actions would end the life of another person. So if I hit someone with my car, and withhold lifesaving support, and that person dies, I get charged with manslaughter. I have the "option" to withhold support, yes, but if I do that, I'm facing being charged with a crime if the person dies. So to apply this same analog to abortion: the woman has the "option" to withhold support, yes, but if she does, she gets charged with a crime because she knew, or should have known, that her actions would result in the death of another person. This analogy not only doesn't help the pro-choice position, it actually cuts against their argument, by establishing that the woman, acording to the parameters of the analogy, should at the very least be charged with manslaughter.

The car accident analogy, as with all pro-abortion analogies, is ridiculous. First of all, the baby in the womb isn’t dying unless you get an abortion. If left alone, they’ll be fully-formed and ready to go in about 9 months. Second, it’s your own child. Not some random person. It’s your baby that you made through sexual intercourse. I know that we’ve casualized sex and made infinite methods of birth control, but sex is for procreation. Just because you’re not using it for procreative purposes doesn’t change the purpose of sex. Lastly, it’s not like your baby just ran up and crawled inside you and is refusing to get out. Again, you had sex and created that baby. The baby was made in your womb because of a choice you made. And as stated, that baby will be out of your body in 9 months. No, you aren’t being “forced to give birth.” Unless you’re forced into sex, nobody is forcing pregnancy on you aside from the forces of nature itself. What you want isn’t bodily autonomy, it’s absolution from the consequences of sex. You want to forsake motherhood so you argue that you should be allowed to kill your baby, but refuse to acknowledge what you’re doing as such to also absolve you of guilt for what you’re doing. It’s evil.

It’s interesting to hear them converse about parental medical rights vs. children’s bodily autonomy. This is an important point. Parents DO have parental medical responsibilities which override children’s autonomy. But everyone knows this generally applies to instances such as vaccines, pharmaceutical treatments, and in today’s society, gender issues. But parents never have the right to order their child’s execution outside of the womb.
