You get to a certain pinnacle of your craft, whether it's sports, entertainment, the business world, fashion, whatever industry, people basically fawning over you like you the next coming and it's next to impossible to retain humility... Most people who are trailblazers or who are world famous or super rich are usually extremely arrogant and pompous... Kobe wasn't any different, not that it makes it ok to be a d**k but it comes with the territory... 99% of average citizens if they were ever to attain that level of wealth, fame, notoriety would be the same way...

People forget what a monumental dick Kobe was in that 05-08 stretch. Dude was still in his 20s, had just become the unquestioned leader of the Lakers, and had a massive chip on his shoulder. The Colorado trial, being beaten up by the media, talk that he had run Shaq out of town, bad teammate, etc. So he had a villain mentality and was a huge ball hog, and there were some games (elimination games in playoffs) where he just outright quit on his teammates. But being humbled by all the above eventually made him grow up a bit and mature. I also think getting Pau as a teammate was very important for his personal development. They really seemed to have a brotherly relationship, I think it helped Kobe to have a really elite teammate that he actually got along with and were similar in age.

Smush has every right to feel disrespected, but just because people take actions as disrespect doesn’t mean it was meant as disrespect. Honestly my reaction woulda been the very next practice I’m asking to play with the second team, and I’m cooking whoever is guarding me. AND I’m checking Kobe the whole practice. Prove to Kobe and everybody else you deserve what you got. Now I would never tell a grown man how to react, but I think it was a fight or flight situation (basketball only). He personalized that and held on to it.

You have no clue man... That star of the team dictates if you eat or not, so you're certainly not gonna antagonize him or "prove to him" this or that... Smush took the smart road : shut his mouth and moved on, otherwise he might have as well broke Kobe's arrogant pointy nose on the spot. Kobe was a POS human being, no more no less. He deserved to get checked but unfortunately, he was always protected by the system he was in - so his arrogance and disregards for fellow players only grew... People forget that Magic Johnson didn’t talk to Byron Scott when he first got to the Lakers. It happens sometimes to younger players to toughen them up and drive them to be their best selves. He used to ride Pau Gasol (pause) all the time, even in the media. Result, they won championships and ultimately became the best of friends.

Why do you think players like Brian Cook, vlad radmanovic, Sasha vujacic, Lamar Odom have never come out and said anything negative about Kobe? All Role players that Phil Jackson rode hard and even called one a Space cadet. You know why Kobe never came out against them the same way he did Smush? It's because those players actually worked their butts off and earned his respect. That wasn't Smush. Everytime you saw smush he was sulking, complaining, and completely removed from his teammates. The players literally had to motivate him in game constantly because he would lose confidence all the time and sulk. Completely lose his aggressiveness. And you think Kobe was the bad teammate? How do you think a player like that would mesh with Kobe? You act as if this doesn't go on with other star players and their teammates. There's a reason Kobe has 5 championships whether you like him or not. Would you even give a damn about Smush if Kobe wasn't brought up?

Me playing with Smush Parker when he was 17-18 years old and I’m one year younger. He was a natural small forward in street ball being 6’3-6’4 where he dominated the competition. But in the NBA Due to his size he was forced to play point guard where he was out of position. If he was 6’6-6’7 playing his natural position he would have been a great in the league.

Its crazy how what kobe says and media can change your perception of a guy. Because Kobe said Smush was his worst teammate we look at him like he was trash. But he averaged 11 points a game and 3.2 assists for 2 seasons with the lakers and was only given 2 chances and no time to develop. On the OTHER HAND, Derek Fisher was who Kobe said was his favorite teammate. Fisher was given 13 seasons with the Lakers and never progressed past an average point guard with no all star appearances. Fisher averaged 8 points a game around 2 assists for his career with the Lakers. Dereks rookie year he avg 3.9 ppg and he didnt avg more than 6 ppg for the next 4 years. Fishers looked at as a beloved Laker, while Smush is considered worthless. And it most likely has to do with Kobe liking Derek and not liking Smush. Kobe was probably instrumental on getting Smush cut despite him putting up better numbers in just 2 seasons than Fisher. We never got to see Smush's progression cuz no one ever gave him a shot. Verdict: Smush was an average point guard, but in no way does he deserve to be called trash or someones worst teammate. Smush could ball and couldve progressed to a 15-17 ppg point guard or a solid 6th man.
