My grandfather, George Magarian, born in 1895, educated at the American College at Konia, Turkey and, later, director of the Konya YMCA, filmed Smyrna, Turkey, immediately after it's genocidal destruction.
"The Great Fire of Smyrna is the name commonly given to the fire that ravaged Izmir/Smyrna from 13 to 17 September 1922. Turkish armed forces systematically burned the city and killed Greek and Armenian inhabitants. This is based on extensive eyewitness evidence from Western troops sent to Smyrna during the evacuation, foreign diplomats/relief workers based at Smyrna and Turkish sources." - www.Wikipedia.org
The resulting 35mm edited nitrate film was hidden in my grandmother's apartment in NYC for 60 years. I was lucky to transfer it to digital before it completely disintegrates. -Robert Davidian 5 March 2008

This is absolutely incredible. The fact that you have these from your grandfather is amazing. The genocide committed by the Turkish government against Greeks, Armenians, and Assyrians in Asia Minor has a huge impact in the communities of the people. I am so happy you have transferred this to a digital copy. I genuinely hope that if you have more pieces of footage like this that you upload them. You’d be surprised to how this information can get out there. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you for the precious footage. My grandmother was 10 at the time of the disaster. She used to tell me that there were bodies all over the waterfront of Smyrna, that they had to step on them in order to keep moving. The port water was coloured red by the blood of the dead. Over 1.000.000 Greeks were killed and about 1.800.000 lost their home. Greek populations had lived in Minor Asia since 11th cent. B.C, and they lost their people and their homes so violently. Also other populations like Armenians were hitted.
