Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her p
ost-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

I found 3 lost seed packs yesterday, fennel, bang bang zinnias and a teaspoon tomato (free seeds from Baker Creek). did not want to tie up a 10X 20 tray so I did nothing with them. Today I can try snail rolls, if it does not work, too bad, I have more plants than I know what to do with, as usual. Timely tip, never even heard of a "snail roll" before. Thanks for sharing. Stay Well!!!

Too early in the seed roll expeiment to fully recommend a strategy, but so far an old upholstery fabric scrap with a ~1cm soil thickness seems to be working really well. It's sturdy enough to stand up on its own as long as you wrap it with an elastic, and bottom watering has been working because the fabric is beefy enough to wick quite a lot up.

I used to be so upset with my grandma for wrapping my sandwiches for school in wax paper...it wasn't COOL. All the other 80s kids had plastic wrap. She was born in 1919. But I was her little princess so she caved after a year and got plastic wrap. Lol!!

I've never heard of this and now I won't be able to sleep until I've tried it! Lol. This is genius! Also, I think I'll go with some type of fabric as it will wick water up and keep it in a tall cup to keep in the humidity. Given I only have two window sills for seed starting, space-saving ideas are a must for me! Thank you! 😍

It’s pretty darn fantastic. I’m not gonna lie. It didn’t work for my zinnias, though. Those definitely freaked out when I use this. However, everything else seem to turn out just fine with this so far.

Speaking of snails, have you any opinion on electroculture with the use of copper wires. From what I’ve seen on KZbin, it helps a little to its rock star magnificent. But all agree that the copper keeps the snails 🐌 away.

Just stumbled on this concept today and really appreciate a scientific approach vs anectodal. I'm wondering what your thoughts would be on using material that can wick water, and folding it over the soil at the bottom, like... A pita pocket? I feel like you could get better capillary action if the soil couldnt run away. There is so much fast fashion textile waste I can absolutely see jeans or even sheets used for this. 70's double knit polyester would last forever!

Cool idea..never heard of this...thanks. I'm wondering if this would work with peas, even though you think it would be difficult. I have a hard time growing peas as they germinate after sowing in the garden but then they disappear. I found out last year that the sparrows eat the new tender seedlings..lol. I want to start them indoors this year until they become a few inches tall. I know they don't like disturbed roots and prefer a taller pot so I was going to try toilet paper rolls. Maybe the snail roll would work too? I want to seed at least 100 plants.

This could work to keep all the plants compact under grow lights but I wonder about the stress on the transplants when moved outside verse pots with less root disturbance?

Im not sure if capillary action would be a problem when bottom feeding a snail roll. I use sip containers that rely on capillary action., and there is a limit on how far up water will travel. But its about 18 to 20 inches depending on the mix. Still it looks interesting, not sure if I want to deal with the mess when making it or separating the seedlings.

Hi Ashley. How can I propagate choke cherry trees? There is a ton at the old farm that gave been there for over 50 years. Can I root branches or do I have to into the thick of it and dig down to the roots? Zone 4. Best time to do this. TIA. Love your videos.

If you look at the dramatic tiktok unrolling you can see the individual plants they took out of pots and rolled up in there. A real roll grown from seeds would have roots going through and embedded in the paper, preventing unrolling.
