Ed is right. Identical twins are just monozygotic twins. Meaning they came from the same embryo. During development things can happen that make them look different (phenotype) even if they are genetically (genotype) identical. For example, one of the twins is usually born bigger than the other because they received more nutrients during gestation. Another example is for the twins. Their genotype (normal conda) is the same, but their phenotype is different (exact position of spots)

Grandma: Well, I bought a hognose from Ed and Emily, and it turned out it was a twin, so they asked if I wanted to stay in touch with the other owner and twin. Congrats on the twins. I would still consider them identical twins. The spots/pattern act kind of like a snakes fingerprints and even identical twins have different fingerprints and sometimes even some distinguishable features slightly different.
@jacksona1262Ай бұрын
Thats cool, I didn't think of that. I was more on the double yolk/embryo side.
@nightbane2889Ай бұрын
I would consider them fraternal as they are sufficiently different enough physically. Fingerprints are interesting in that there not completely genetic in nature (hence why identicle twins can have different fingerprints). Still guess the only way to truly know would be a genetic test.
@caitopotato5519Ай бұрын
Same as white patterning/markings on dogs as well as ticking/spots on dalmatians, the overall general amount is genetically determined, but not the actual exact patterning, so cloned dogs with white markings will not be identical. It's likely the same with spot patterning.
@maltedcrowАй бұрын
@@caitopotato5519 Same with white spotting in cats as well! The percentage of white spotting is determined genetically, but the actual patterning of it occurs during the development of the embryo.
@evakluitersАй бұрын
@@nightbane2889 fraturnal means the snakes come from different eggs and identical means the snakes come from the same egg. Which means all the eggs in the clutch are practicly the same as a human having fraturnal twins or triplets or more. So there is no need for a genetic test. Fraturnal litterly translates to two egged twins just like identical is the same as one egged.

It's more to do with health problems. Snakes are a species that is meant to only have one baby per egg. So twins run the risk of stillborns, being conjoined, one being healthy and the other not, etc. One year they had three twins but only one pair survived long term I think.
@snakewithapen5489Ай бұрын
@@maskedpanda8502 yeah, and coincidentally the surviving pair were also conda hognoses. One weighed 4 grams and the other weighed 2 grams

Hi! Congratulations on the twins! One possible reason for the difference in spots between the twins is that such things as patterns tend to be randomized during development. The amount of pattern and the hue of the snake is genetic, but usually when it comes to where the spots in an animal should be placed, chance is usually the deciding factor. As the cells divide and decide which pigment they should have two different and unique set of patterns develop even if the starting genetic material is the same. (an example of this is how the pattern of a calico cat which has been cloned will be different from the original cat)

Yay!!!!!!! I love twins and hognose snakes are my favorite! As a mom of twins, also married to a twin, there are several different types, identical, fraternal, mirror image and conjoined. Since these aren’t identical and obviously not conjoined, they may be mirror image. I couldn’t see both sides at the same time to make a comparison, but it is highly possible.
@iimuffinsaurАй бұрын
I feel like they could still be identical. The way spots are determined might be like not fully connected to the dna. I dont have the words to describe it but it would be like how sometimes one twin has moles another twin doesnt
@feuerlingАй бұрын
They could very well be from the same ovum that fully split during early embryonic development (they are the same morph, same sex, same base colors.) They just wouldn't have developed the same exact same way simply due to miniscule differences in the gene expression and precise arrangement of the cells in the young embryo. To be truly "identical" in appearance, all their cells would have had to be in the exact same place. A proto-pigment-cell ending up a few micrometers further up the embryo would result in a different pattern of the hatchling.

@diebosseyyy4904Ай бұрын
They are identical twins by definition and have to be the same gender and morph, because they come from the same egg. They have the same genes. They can still look slightly different just like human identical twins have different fingerprints and can generally be told apart by their parents friends ect. All babys in this clutch are technically fraternal twins, since that just means that they were, like, sired/conceived together. Only if the clutch really has two fathers and some babys have one dad and some the other, they would not be twins, they'd be half siblings.
@diebosseyyy4904Ай бұрын
(technically there are apparently two recorded cases total with humans where two different sperm fertilized the same egg cell and resulted in semi-identical twins that only share half their genes. So like maybe that is technically possible with snakes? But normally if twins come from the same egg, like if they're literally in the same snake egg, chicken egg, ect, but also generally if they come from the same egg cell/ovum, that means there was one sperm and one egg cell, making normally one baby, but very early on in development the baby cells split in 2, resulting in two babys with the same exact DNA.)
