Our Macaw is Missing an Ear?!?!

Well this was unexpected. We discovered that Chaka (our baby greenwing macaw) is missing an ear, so off to the vet we go!

Chaka's smelly ear update- Our vet said it wasn't anything to worry about currently, but if we notice any swelling from under the skin where the ear is located, then we'd have to worry. Sorry I forgot to mention that part on video! That being said, it actually doesn’t smell as bad as it did when we filmed this video. Hopefully she'll grow out of it!

Chaka’s strange ear reminds me of my own ear problem. My right inner ear did not develop properly so water would not drain from it, meaning getting any moisture inside my ear meant a guaranteed painful ear infection. Just a suggestion to keep water away from that ear!

@shelbybaby1642 if it's as common as they said, most keepers likely don't have an issue with it. As long as they can still hear, it isn't really considered a defect. Kind of like if your cat has extra toes

Though extra toes and a missing ear no matter how common is still definitely defined at a defect, that doesn’t make it a bad thing. And any kitten from a reputable breaded probably wouldn’t have extra toes and if they did it would be disclosed and pretty obvious.

Veterinary technician here, I focus mainly on purpose bred mice but I've worked with a wide variety of animals and ran a skeleton lab where we studied evolution, growth, and deformities in vertebrate organisms. One thing that I've seen in mice a lot and a few aves is the lack of an external ear, or pinna. Birds already lack the pinna (which is the visible part of the ear) but I've seen mice where the canal does not form either, creating a flap of skin over the drum. It happens more often than you think and doesn't cause problems in cases where the skull is developed correctly. The x-ray looks good so she should still hear just fine and there shouldn't be any problems there. One additional thing to monitor for (besides swelling) would be scratching in case that skin is punctured. It would heal but contaminants can get in and cause future problems. Also keep an eye on her other ear with the small opening and make sure the passage stays clear. Either way she looks great and appears to be a very healthy bird! There’s a show/book series called All Creatures Great and Small. It’s inspired by the life of James Harriet who practiced veterinarian medicine in rural England during the early-mid 1900s Anyways, in one episode of the original TV show, they discover a piglet who was born without a rear end opening 😳 I don’t remember how the episode turned out, unfortunately. I’d assume either surgical intervention or euthanasia I’m glad Chaka’s genetic glitch is much less critical to her wellbeing. DNA and the way our bodies build themselves is fascinating

(I’m also in my 20s with arthritis!) edit: some unsolicited meloxicam advice from a human, it took me a few months to build up the meds in my system to really notice a difference, and heat works wonders to help the inflammation. Also, cold, stormy, rainy/ snowy or cloudy days make everything a lil slower n stiffer… I think it’s the barometric pressure but some heat helps loosen things up (my rabbit is also arthritic so on these days we snuggle with the heated throw!)

I'm also on Meloxicam and would like to add that not only can it take some time to build up and feel like it's doing anything like the original poster has said but as someone with severe chronic pain while it often doesn't seem like it's doing anything because I'm still hurting so badly I can definitely tell how much of an effect it's been having if I miss a dose for some reason. I go from severe pain but some functioning to barely being able to move certain joints. So when Emily said it didn't seem to be doing anything for Cheyenne, while that may be the case, it also may be doing more than it seems.

It does have a sweet taste to it, almost like super bland banana lifesavers. I find it’s super effective for me but I think it’s one you can’t be on long term?

I work at an exotics vet! Meloxicam is an NSAID we prescribe all. The. Time. And we usually flavor the meds for birds, that's probably why she ate it so happily!

Meloxicam is an anti-inflammatory used in lots of animals :) kitty cats, doggies, guinea pigs, rabbits etc.! The oral solution is meant to be palatable, kinda like how kid's painkillers are often strawberry flavoured!

A red-tailed hawk that I worked with during my last seasonal position had a very similar issue with her ears! The holes were mostly covered by a flap of skin and with just a little pinhole in the flap of skin. I got to see her ears during one of her bi-annual check-ups and it was WILD to see just the little pinhole ear. I have a picture of it. She was struck by a car as a juvenile bird and while the fracture healed perfectly in one of her wings, the primary feathers on the other wing were damaged and never grew back, permanently affecting her ability to fly. She can do about 30ish feet, mostly launching herself the distance with her powerful thighs. Meloxicam is my favorite. My rabbit LOVES it and he certainly gets a lot of it because we love a medically complex bunny with chronic stasis issues.

It's not "if it works it works". Using meds meant for animals can have more harmful side effects or even cause permanent damage or even death if used excessively. Some pet meds can be fine, but it's not something worth gambling a life over.

im guessing they mentioned it off camera with how on top of thing emily is my best guess would be that its a normal smell from not getting as much air as the other ear but since theres zero redness or tenderness that should mean its not infected though im sure they will keep an eye or nose out for changes thats what i would do!!

Meloxicam is given to humans for Osteoarthritis and other conditions too. I’ve had it before when I pinched my sciatic nerve and my body went into swollen overdrive. It was the ONLY thing that helped. It really is a miracle drug. It’s now my reserve med for when I pinch nerves which I’m oh so prone to do because OA and hypermobility. So sorry that you have joined the club Cheyanne. Happy your little body lasted longer than mine before the first arthritis hit. Enjoy your good meds sweet girl. I’m sure you’ll be enjoying life so much more now.

Obviously talk to your vet, but when I’ve been on it, it def took a little bit for it to really kick in. Otherwise warmth always makes my arthritis feel better. That and consistently using the joint, even for non-weight bearing tasks. Would a bird like Cheyanne cuddle up to something like a CuddleSafe wrapped in a towel? And can birds have joint supplements? That’s something I’d also ask the vet about. Lubricating those joints really does help. For me and my cats, that looks like a lot of fish oil and glucosamine supplements… but I have to imagine there’s an option for large birds.

The “seizure phase” is known as emergence delirium or dysphoria! No actual seizures occur it’s only confusion and trying to regain consciousness, showing as flailing and vocalizing. Some drugs are more likely to cause this than others but it can happen to any animal

Pharmacy Tech here, yes, don't lick your bird's meds, 😂, but Meloxicam is a human medication as well, so Emily will be a-ok. But on the MedSci Nerdy front (probably a question for the Vet), Do NSAIDs (Meloxicam's Med Family) irritate other species stomachs like it can ours without stomach protectants (food, PPIs (Nexium and the like), etc)?

Can’t speak for exotics but in dogs and cats Meloxicam and other NSAIDs can cause gastric ulcers but I don’t often pair it with any other meds like a PPI but we do recommend they be given with food. Harmful side effects like ulcers are more commonly seen with chronic use or higher dosages. We can see just general GI upset like with any medication.

I can't with how she did the eye pinning thing for the pain meds, so adorable!!! Our cat Oberon recently started having to take meds 2x a day because he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He has severe anxiety when it comes to medication, so I expected trouble. Wouldn't take pill pockets, ran from them like poison. Turns out if you squish the pill between a layer of pill pocket and a regular hard treat then wait even 5 minutes for the pill pocket to start to dry out, he LOVES it. Pets are weird LOL

I'm not an expert by any means but I would suggest doing a small hearing test with Chaka some how. I bet she has a hearing impairment of some sort (either by her not being able to hear things below or above a certian volume level or maybe she can't hear certian pitches/tones). If you've had a stuborn time trying to train her it could be due to a hearing impairment making the commands muffled and not understandable to her 🤷‍♀️ I love watching your videos and learning about the different animals through you ❤

They're sensitive to vibrations, but they're still able to hear because they have a fully formed inner ear within their skull. In fact, the reason why Spider ball pythons have neurological issues is because their inner ear is deformed and puts pressure on their brain

Is anyone else curious as to if the breeder should have noticed the lack of ear? I don’t mean to disparage them and obviously it can be easily missed but I feel like they might’ve checked.

I agree. If they are selling “defective” birds they should’ve bothered to check or at least inform new buyers

@ChristineSG19 they mentioned it's a common issue with large birds, so it's possible that more experienced keepers don't see it as an issue. Kind of like a cat with extra toes, it really doesn't change much

Human family doc here - Meloxicam is often used in people medicine (as mentioned in a few comments already) and is a long-acting NSAID kind of like ibuprofen. I volunteer at a bunny rescue and we use it for them too! Side note- as someone who is not well-versed in reading bird radiographs, I was proud of myself for spotting the arthritis before the vet pointed it out! And also I can’t get over HOW small Chaka’s brain is compared to her skull.

I don't know the time period but as a person taking meloxicam sometimes it can take a minute to reach a new "normal"! There are other medications that I use with it but highly recommend using turmeric as well as other anti inflammatory foods that macaws can have as well. Not a cure all but definitely will give a bit of a boost!

meloxicam also works for dogs, sheep's, humans. Mind you it can take a little time before you see the results. As my doctor explained it can take years of irritation before joins get inflamed, don´t expect medication to work in one or two weeks. I had to take it for 6 months and than it started to work really good!

They do great work, relatively affordable, and can even mail prescriptions. My cat was diagnosed with asthma & didn't respond to an inhaler so he takes a very low dose of liquid prednisolone that they flavor with fish. My guy loves the taste so much he tries to eat the syringe!

There are many online compounding pharmacies for pets that can send the script within 24-48 hours. I've used one called wedgewood many times, they are great, can make many forms of edible compounded meds, like actual cat/dog treats, for instance.

I was born with malrotated intestines! Didn’t find out until I was 16 (I’m 25 now), but I went to the ER with stomach pains and they did some scans on me and that’s how we found out, they said you couldn’t even see one of my intestines where it should be, but it’s been so long that I can’t remember which one it was. I’ve been fine so far, so im going as long as I can without surgery to correct it 🤣

This sort of thing can happen to people too. It’s called Atresia of the Ear Canal. In that case the ear will look normal on the outside but the hole through the bone is missing. This is when a person could get a Cochlear Implant. It’s a hearing aid that transfer sound through the skull. I know about this because someone in my family has this condition.

Emily try a foot soak in warm water with lots of Epsom salts for 10 or 15 minutes. Walmart has those Rubbermaid "sinks" for camping that make great bathtubs for a couple of dollars. I will say that I have recently acquired the same diagnosis in my toe and I feel so BAD FOR Cheyenne because it is FREAKING PAINFUL!! 😬🥵🤯🥺😢 I'm not kidding, it is sudden hot poker stabbing pains and it feels good with warmth and massage. I hope you find something that helps. ❤❤❤

Weird comment, but meloxicam is actually used for people too! It's generic name is Mobic and is used to treat inflammation in the body (it's like a stronger ibuprofen). I take it for joint pain caused by lupus, so it makes sense that Cheyenne was put on something similar. Feel better Cheyenne!!

I'm glad Cheyenne approved of her medication. That pinning was adorable. And I'm glad Chaka's ear isn't too serious. I wish giving medication to my dachshunds had been that easy. Shadow would take his pills in any piece of meat. Comet, however, would eat the meat and spit out the pill. We had to buy special treats to mold around the pills so he couldn't spit them out.

My 13 year old green cheek conure is also on meloxicam for her arthritis when she gets a flair up ☺. She’s not as fond of the syringe though. I need to give it with a bit of apple juice

Aw, vet trips are never any fun, but they both behaved so well! Its funny my old lady buns are also prescribed Meloxicam for arthritis! Our current old lady takes it so well for us and its definitely helped her, so hopefully Cheyenne is as good at taking meds as my Storm and it helps her too! Exotics vets are really the best people!

It’s definitely not safe to lick after your animals, but she’d be fine! The biggest concern is if she caught something, or if she put the entire vial in her mouth. Though, again, don’t do it because this specifically is intended for the birds, not the people.

Meloxicam is MAGIC for humans too! My mom took it after her ACL replacement.
