My condolences to Steve's family (Stevie's previous owner) for their loss. Your son did an immaculate job raising such a beautiful and healthy Gila Monster, and I can only bet he treated all other animals (and humans) with such love and care. Thank you for trusting Snake Discovery (and their audience) to watch over this little girl as I know that may feel tough, and really I hope your family gets through this difficult time. I'm sorry Stevies previous human passed away, but I'm glad you are there to give her a new loving home. It's always wonderful to hear you talk about reptiles; you can tell you care A LOT about all the animals who come under your care. Stevie is adorable, by the way! She's such a beautiful colour, and seems very happy in her new home. I hope she gets on well with Sheila. Watching your videos makes me want to keep reptiles but as a rat owner, that's not really a possibility right now. Maybe one day. Also, I'm getting one of those necklace kits! 😍

I have rats, mice, guinea pigs and reptiles (with and without legs lol). It's definitely possible if you have the time, space, knowledge, etc such as ALWAYS cleaning your hands between handling the rats and reptiles so you don't get a food response bite.

@@kerseykrewzoo fellow rat owner here!! Ideally I'd have snakes one day, but currently I can't do it because it would usually require handling dead rats or mice, and it would remind me too much of my babies 😭😭
@kerseykrewzoo
@kerseykrewzoo Жыл бұрын
@@realname6857 I totally understand that. I've found that I have to put my brain into a different mindset when dealing with the snake food aspect, especially with the smaller rats as most of my snakes are on "rat pup/crawler" sizes and those are my favorite stages of life for them. Plus, my adults keep making friggin' gorgeous babies with unique markings. This is one reason I've been thinking of selling some for pets if I can find enough interest in my area. I handle all the rats pretty frequently and provide enrichment and climbing opportunities and my main group of 6 adults (the only group as I've just started on the rat owning/breeding path) is in a 3 feet long by 2 feet wide by 4 feet tall barred enclosure and I intend on purchasing/building more cages and/or an extention for the current cage when I can.

It's nice to see someone else who find lizards adorable, because they absolutely can be and are! And it's pretty clear Stevie was loved by her previous owner! Naming her Stevie is a great tribute! Gila monsters are named after the Gila River. The word Gila is a Spanish contraction of Hah-quah-sa-eel, a Yuma word meaning "running water which is salty". Their genus is Heloderma which means "studded skin" and their species name is suspectum, and this is because when it was first described by paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope, who originally thought it was just a northern variation of the Mexican beaded lizard, he suspected that the lizard might be venomous due to the grooves in the teeth. Which of course, he was right. There are five beaded lizards in the Heloderma genus. The Chiapan, Mexican, and Rio Fuerte beaded lizards are found in Mexico, while the Motagua Valley beaded lizard is found only in southeastern Guatemala. These Gila monsters are definitely the most incredible lizards in the US as they are not only venomous, but also the largest lizards in the country as they can measure up to about 22 inches (56 centimeters) in total length. The colorful, beadlike skin of the gila monster helps with camouflage. Its claws are used for digging burrows and for digging out other animals' eggs.

I just had my mother die, and we had to adopt her pitbull and betta fish overnight. Trust me when I say, even if the animals don't express it, they are INCREDIBLY happy to have a new home, even if they may miss their old one. A death is hard on them too, but it's a little easier when they have people who love them around.

The Gila monster is definitely not something you'd want to mess with in the wild! The Gila monster produces venom in modified salivary glands at the end of its lower jaws, unlike snakes, whose venom is produced in glands behind the eyes. Four potentially lethal toxins have been isolated from the Gila monster's venom, which cause hemorrhage in internal organs and exophthalmos (bulging of the eyes), and helothermine, which causes lethargy, partial paralysis of the limbs, and hypothermia in rats. Coyote Peterson described the bite as "like hot lava coursing through your veins" and claimed it was the worst pain he had ever experienced. It is generally regarded as the most painful venom produced by any vertebrate. On May 8, 1890, southeast of Tucson, Arizona Territory, Empire Ranch owner Walter Vail captured and thought he had killed a Gila monster. He tied it to his saddle and it bit the middle finger of his right hand and would not let go. A ranch hand pried open the lizard's mouth with a pocket knife, cut open his finger to stimulate bleeding, and then tied saddle strings around his finger and wrist. They summoned Dr. John C. Handy of Tucson, who took Vail back to Tucson for treatment, but Vail experienced swollen and bleeding glands in his throat for sometime afterward

The fact that there are lethal toxins in it's venom doesn't mean it's actually deadly. Apples also contain the lethal toxin Cyanide, but you don't see people dropping dead when they eat them. The venom is extremely painful, but you won't be in serious danger. As far as I know, there have been no confirmed deaths caused by the venom.

1:40 This reminds me of the time I worked at a wildlife shelter, and the people who did the pickups (from a different company) were notoriously bad with species names and they called ahead that they were coming to us with a very big pigeon that was injured. So I was told to set up a pigeon enclosure. When they finally arrived at the very end of our shift with the "very big pigeon" they carried in a Great black-backed gull (Larus marinus) (basically a good-sized gull species) and we were all just staring trying to figure out how it could have been mistaken for a pigeon XD That was an impressive mess up, even for them. Don't worry though, we all rushed off after that to give it treatment, a bigger enclosure and proper food, and the gull made a full recovery.

So glad that the family found such a great home for their son's clearly well loved pet. This little beauty couldn't have found a better place. Especially with the family not very familiar with the reptile world I'm glad she didn't go with craigslist, you never know what you'll find there.

I love how you guys make your content, I got rubber ducky isopods recently and it was the best $100 I’ve spent, on an animal, or a few…

So funny to see. I have lived here in AZ for years and only way I have seen a Gila is at the zoos we have. Lol. Love them. And Stevie is adorable.

Gilas have always been one of my favorite lizards with their monitor lizard tongues, horned lizard-like skulls and the fact that most lizards (besides gilas and komodos) don't have venom
