Identical twins often have small differences, like freckles in humans or spots in hognoses, due to epigenetic changes... Regarding the twins’ slightly differing patterns: I’m not an expert and I don’t know if this is the case in snakes, but in some mammals pigment expression can be slightly different even in identical twins. Years ago I had a conversation with a veterinarian about pinto horses in particular and he said that even cloned horses will have slightly different patterns because it’s mostly genetic but also partially random chance in the exact way the signaling molecules disperse through the fetus. So if that’s also true in snakes, it’s entirely possible that they are identical twins just with slightly different pattern expressions!

Exactly what I was thinking. I remember reading about a cloning experiment with a calico cat to observe the effects of gene expression. Her clone had a completely different pattern and was very different in personality. I noticed the snakes had an identical head stamp, which tells me they're probably identical twins. The rest of the patterning is probably controlled by gene expression and that's why it's different.

Hi Ed and Emily! I heard you guys wondering about the twins not being exactly identical which mean they could be fraternal, but technically all the babies are fraternal. What I think could be going on there is semi-identical twins. What this means is that the babies had the same cell from the mother, but different cells from the father. So essentially the egg was fertilized twice and the mom's cell split. So they would be identical on the Mother's side and Fraternal on the Father's side. It's an exceedingly rare occurrence and there are only seven currently recognised sets of human twins who are semi-identical last I heard. Or I could just be wrong and one just has an extra brown spot due to something in development. Either way, they're all adorable!

Just want to add to the genetics conversation that pattern genetics is not strictly Mendelian and have only been shown to have ~.56-.79 heritability in some population of snakes and reptiles. There has also been some evidence of embryonic stage interacting with genetics to influence final pattern/colour. I bring up all this to say that twin snakes can have different patterns to each other due to environmental influences and epigenetics. For a slightly stretched example (in terms of species) when they began cloning dairy cows scientists found that the clone and original would have different black and white patterns because that trait is influenced by environmental factors. TLDR: They can be identical twins and have different patterns because phenotype = genotype + environment
@sparrowthesparrow4 жыл бұрын
So to simplify your point: Super rare adorable sneks- give much care & boops - make sure they are much loved :3
@blazertundra4 жыл бұрын
I'm inclined to think they're true identical twins because they have identical head stamps. A cloning experiment in calico cats found that gene expression controls the spotting. There was a pretty stark example of a clone who had almost no orange coming from a cat with a lot of orange in her coat. If the same thing holds true in snakes, that's probably why the twins are very similar but slightly different in spotting.

Yes, that does happen. Eggs simply weren’t designed to support two babies. But on rare occasions twin babies can hatch from a single egg and both survive. Usually they’re premature or underdeveloped.

Normal: 6 grams, twins: 2 grams and 4 grams. Makes 6 together. They shared their weight and together are the same as a normal baby. That's kinda awesome.
@sourcererseven38582 жыл бұрын
Ed and Emily really need a finer scale. 2 grams on this scale could mean anyhere from 1.5 to 2.5 (plus any error of measurement). It would have been interesting to weigh them both together to see if they add up to 5 grams or 7.

Identical twins can have still noticeable differences if they experience a different development in the egg! The bigger one had a chance to grow a little more, so as he grew his pattern kept going a little more and he's got that extra dot! Different genes of yours will "switch on" depending on your environment, which is pretty cool. You can have the same genes but your environment can change how they are expressed. Also they're all so cute
@GassyGoat3 жыл бұрын
Identical means they split from the same egg, fraternal means two different eggs. In terms for humans.
@basicallyperidot52993 жыл бұрын
Technically the whole clutch is fraternal to each other.

A common misconception about monozygotic (identical) twins is that they are 100% identical. There is an environmental factor that plays a role in genetics as well. I study human development but my guess is that the twins are monozygotic but during development there was something in the environment that changed how they look. Hope they are both doing great now 😀
@ToeIn2194 Жыл бұрын
Seems like one snake twin got more nutrition then the other hence the size and different gene expression in development.
@StonedtotheBones13 Жыл бұрын
I know you said you do humans, but I wonder if a snake's pattern is like our fingerprints, wherein even twins have them different. Altho I imagine it'd be hard for snake twins to not be different I'd think, since they only have so much room in an egg.
@ToeIn2194 Жыл бұрын

Certain types of horse markings, such as blazes and socks vary even in identical twins/clones as the exact shaping of the markings is not genetic but environmental/happens in the womb due to reasons other than genetics.

I know this video is from a while ago, so I'm hoping this gets to you because I have a question that when it popped in my head, I just needed to know the answer. This is also the perfect video to ask this question I think. Thank-you for sharing this too, my no reptile life window is slowly closing when you see the cutest babies I have seen so far. The shots you had could make the most amazing photography stills, just amazing, heads out of eggs, and the twins, I'm in it for the little guy. To have eggs that don't do well, and this produces 2 amazing healthy snakes, brings you joy. Anyway, I got distracted with your question, this is mine. You know the moment when you are spending time with your animal friends and family, and you see something, for example the cutest head poking out, your heart bursts with joy and you talk to them in your signature voice, you can't help it. Well, I love seeing the moments this happens with you two, and one of your signature words is, and I'm trying to spell like the sound, it's mwahhh. I love this version of plain old ahhhh, but then you hear you two have the same mwahhh, I wondered who did that come with, who was the original mwahhh-er, and who had the adorable copy and sync with your partner, it's brilliant??? I hope that made sense, all the best to you, Amy from England xxx
