I also have a toad that is missing an eye, it is completely healed if it was an injury, but I suspect that he was born with it. My other one is also half blind, he has both eyes but his right eye is missing an iris. They are both pretty slow at catching their food because of it, the one that is missing an eye always hops in circles around his pray before he goes for the kill, it's cute, but I know that he is just readjusting to see his food.

Hey, thank you so much for this video! My friend and I have been wanting to keep toads for a long time. Last night, we were walking around his property when we spotted two American toads who were trapped in a well and extremely malnourished. They were weak from treading water for so long, and one of them is so skinny her body width is slightly thinner than that or her head. (These guys are usually way fat and live around my friend’s patio in gutter pipes and other little hides, feeding on bugs that swarm under the patio lights.) We currently have them housed in a 36”x18”x18” bin with holes drilled into the sides and a locking lid. They have mealworms and beetles dusted with multivitamin powder, Eco Earth to burrow in, a shallow dish with conditioned water, and a bark hide. We originally weren’t sure if we would keep them after we nursed them to health, but now we’re really considering keeping them and moving one of them into another 36”x18”x18” bin with the same commodities later.

Meanwhile Indiana be like: You know all those native species that are harmless for you to keep? You can't keep those as pets. But things that are known to be invasive? You can keep those as pets.
@Cannibal-Wings6 жыл бұрын
Yeah a lot of states have interesting amphibian laws. Like for mole salamanders, it depends on the state because in some states the native species isn't allowed to be kept while it's flipped in other states. I think it's mostly done to encourage people not to take from the wild and reduce native populations. But it's also frustrating because you just know people are releasing their unwanted amphibians to the wild. That last bit is why in California you can't have any species of ambystoma, they're really concerned about interbreeding between non-native tigers and the native California Tiger which is endangered. Laws man... haha
@neight80776 жыл бұрын
ktkat218 They want the invasive ones out of the wild
@ktkat21886 жыл бұрын
Margaret what I meant was that I can get species that are invasive or have the potential to become invasive from pet stores, but I get your point
@Cannibal-Wings6 жыл бұрын
Well yes, of course. But by allowing the invasives as pets means more could enter the wild through the pet trade, which is what I'm frustrated about. By allowing invasives in as pets and natives out there's a higher chance that those invasives could be dumped into the wild. But on the flip side, by allowing native species as pets it could encourage more wild caught animals to end up in the pet trade. So there's not really a good win/win scenario. Besides like, buying from a breeder. Still doesn't solve the problem if you buy from a breeder and the species is native to your state and you have laws banning the possession of native species as pets, then you're stuck with your only option to buy non native captive breds. Also if you're looking for a pet, even a wild caught invasive might not be possible. Some states have laws that require you to kill any invasive you catch or trap and you cannot take it home or transport it alive.

Caught one from the wild as a kid and kept it as a summer pet once! These little buggers are walking stomachs! Thankfully mine didn't get obese despite me being young and not fully knowing what I was doing, but well fed it certainly was. The thing I remember the most is how quickly (and how well) it tamed. The first week it acted like you'd expect a wild toad to, being afraid of me and trying to escape my hand whenever I tried to grab it. After about a week though it mellowed down to the point where it no longer fled from me at all, and would allow me to pick it up at will and even ate from my hand. I released it back in the forest by fall so it could find a spot to hibernate through winter. Now I know better than to take things from the wild of course, but I'd say if your only two choices are getting a wild one from your backyard or buying a wild caught one your pet store is selling... maybe its better to take it from the wild yourself than to spend your money to encourage a pet store which likely gets many of its animals from pet mills. Ethical pet stores are unfortunately not the norm, though there are good ones out there who even refuse to sell certain animals like kittens and puppies because they are so overly bred while shelters are crowded with them.

A tiny baby toad is living in the ground cover I planted in a box. I live in an apartment and I have visions of this creature the size of my pinky tip getting shredded by the riding mower. I've decided he's coming in. I've watched your channel for years so I had actually set up the environment before watching and I did good. I have fungal gnats in the substrate and I see about a dozen inside the enclosure 🤷🏼♀️ I've got the treated water in the dish. He's so tiny it's a dish of tiny rocks and then water. I hope he thrives. Thanks for the resource. I knew you would have what I needed. Blessed be to the entire Snake Discovery family. ❤

@@jonathanhodges8752 How old is he/she? Small toads should eat every day or so, while larger toads can go more like 2-3 days between feedings. I wouldn't worry too much about stressing her with food. You may also want to buy some crickets, mealworms, or other bugs online or at a petstore.

When we I caught her she was under an inch, and thanks to you and a couple other people, I have been able to take care of her. She hasn't grown much yet, (she is now about an inch or a little bit above) but she will hopefully live a long and happy life! (I read that they can live up to 50 years in captivity!!!)

Roslyn Baldonado If you really do your research, you’ll find that snakes are actually very inexpensive and convenient to supply for. If your getting a reasonably sized ground dwelling snake, like ball pythons, in my opinion it is perfectly fine to keep them in a large bin, similar to the one she houses the toads in, with aspen or cypress bedding. Give them a constant supply of water, and, especially when in shed, a humidity box. You can use a heat pack that connects to some sort of thermostat under the bedding to keep warm. You will also need to feed frozen thawed mice pups when the snake is young and slowly transition into larger mice, small rats, etc as it gets larger. If you don’t want to feed mice, you can get an egg eating snake, which eat finch and quail eggs, just make sure you have a source where you can consistently get them from. Hope this is helpful!

oh, how much I love toads. They're so cute, and after watching this video, I'm confident to try to ask and work something out, I just have a few questions: 1: _Can I put the toad container by/near the window? Or, for them to understand night and day, they just look for "bright and dark". It's not really a important question because it does get bright then dark in my room, but the place I could put them (not by the window) are usually dark places._ 2: _How often do I clean the enclosure or the bedding?_
@guy86464 жыл бұрын
Do not put animal enclosures near or directly across from a window. The light can intensify heat in the enclosure and kill the animals.

I had a Fowler’s toad who wasn’t eating (she last ate the 14th, I feed them every 2-3 days) I tried feeding her everyday after she didn’t eat for the next feeding, but she wouldn’t. During this time she was still hopping about and digging and chilling in the little water dish they have. Today I found her dead in her enclosure. We’ve had he for about a year and a half (she was a wild toad at first but she wondered into a building and we kept her). I just wanna know what happened to her. I’ve looked up what could have happened and most of them just say “it’s nature” but I just can’t except that as an answer. Any help would be appreciated.
