Jon, I just wanted to say thanks. I’m 65 and have been training about 5yrs. I am training for self defense and for fitness. I love the art so much I just can’t bring myself to workout any other way. But what I find intriguing about your methodology is how you openly address the obscurities that make Jiujitsu seem so daunting and complicated. Someone in my position dose not have time to waste with ineffective learning. Thanks again.

Absolute 100% truth. As a beginner, because so much was going on and I felt like I was in a washing machine when rolling, I didn't realise for so long (embarrassingly) that I was being controlled with grips. Once I worked out how to break grips, it changed my world instantly. Next step for my is using grips, and dealing out some payback at the gym, so thank you for sharing this!

As a beginner I have been watching so many videos etc to try to get an overall idea of what I should be trying to do. I have found a lot of very specific techniques but had almost no idea of how they all string together. So grateful for this video! I might actually have some simple concepts here I can use to be less mushed in my next rolling session!

I have a pretty good size library of BJJ instructionals--everyone from Danaher to Xande. Who's my first go-to? Jon Thomas. I don't know of a coach that communicates concepts more effectively. Please, keep'em coming.

The guard position in BJJ is very difficult to learn at the beginning of the BJJ journey. This is great content that fills the gaps. It's strange to me how hard it can be to find people who will take the time to articulate all the seemingly hidden details of guard play. It kinda makes me wonder if people intentionally don't share those details or if it's just expected that you will learn them on your own. Seems to me this should be readily taught goodness...thanks for the video!

I think some people keep info, but also it is very difficult for a lot of people to be self aware of all the small micro things going on that make them able to have success.

I think many people, myself included need an even more literal explanation of grip fighting and the initial contact phase of contact. For instance, how and when to break posture or balance from both a standing and seated position, how to use your grips and legs to break their posture/balance via open guard, dominant grips vs weak grips, how to control the head and arms etc. I'm a Blue belt, 7 months in BTW that explains a lot of my questions and greeness lol. I have had weak grips the entire time if you can believe that and I am just starting to learn them as I type this even. Thinking back, I noticed that many people have weak grips to begin with and just try to force their positions without any sort of strong contact point.

My dude I'm really in ore of you, I'm trying to play the guard retention game but I find myself not being offensive from guard and I just stay defending until a scramble happens and I try to capitalise on it. Your collar and shallow lasso guard looks great and I want to try them with transitioning to collar sleeve and double sleeve and dlr, and will see how I can adapt to it. Also I hope your website gets bigger and I can learn more of your great content and I wanted to say Thank you. In your website you said that you might be changing and adding more details to content you have already created as your game and understanding of it evolves, my question is there a way we get notified when you do adjust any of your content?

Isn't it easier to just do no-gi and avoid all this headache? All this grip shit has me very frustrated... 99% of the times I get tapped is by some lapel / sleeve / collar bullshit.
@JonThomasBJJ2 жыл бұрын
Well no gi is just as complicated with gripping really, when you get into it it’s just as technical. It’s just that in no gi you have the illusion of doing better early because you can scramble and not get locked up. I’n the end to become high level at either you will need to study a lot. If you don’t like gi then I suggest just don’t do it
@javiazar2 жыл бұрын
@@JonThomasBJJ I think what I've found is both games are just as deep, but gi is way wider.
