I make that mistake of turning to my side and going to knee shield all the time and always felt like I was already 2 steps behind. This is gold! More videos exactly like this please.

Jon been a long time. I’m from KC and trained with Steve Hannah years ago until he passed away. Last time I was at Vaghi’s was years ago and got to train with you, big mike, Todd fox (was in town) Brazilian mike etc. that was old school. Glad to see your still training and teaching. 👍🏽

I’ve really been trying to adopt this guard defense system and had some success with it the other night against a younger, faster, stronger, more experienced opponent. I still have the habit of using that knee shield though which is tough against much heavier opponents. I just really need to work on quickly transitioning to getting good grips and counter attacking once I stall that initial guard pass attempt. I think that’s where I struggled. However this guard retention game has really opened up some opportunities for me. Thanks!!!

Solid defense and fluid motion in guard play. Great non rigid approach to stopping your guard from getting passed with the cut

Hey! I just listened to you on the gcp podcast and searched for you on yt, and I'm so glad I did. I was really intrigued by your analytic approach to bjj. Please keep uploading as there aren't any bjj proffesers in NW UK with your approach or experience

JonThomasBJJ np man, I love fellow redheads in the sport. Ive got a question though: how would I win back the inside space in half/rdlr when they underhook your distance keeping leg while youre playing bottom (distance keeping leg as in one that is not hooking)?
@Wenneseph6 жыл бұрын
Just what I needed! Can you post some follow ups to this? Like how you play or what you build on rdlr? etc?

Quality videos, helps to patch holes in my blue belt game :) keep them coming. Also would request Toreado pass defense video. Not that technique where you grab the sleeve and shrimp out it does not work against better and bigger dudes.

Well that was like a private for me. I keep making that knee shield mistake and I haven't found a way to make it work. I just never use the leg over the top defense and I see it all the time in videos of competitive matches. Thanks Jon.
