Do you have trouble with the Cut Through pass when you play Half Guard in BJJ?
The Cut Through, Knee Slide, whatever name you like to call it, is one of the nastiest passes for a Half Guard player to run into.
In this video I add onto my Brazilian Jiujitsu Half Guard series which has focused mainly on the outside hook / old school position.
One of our buddies, Jesse, said that when he is in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym rolling. He experiences a lot of trouble with the Cut Through pass.
So in this video I give 2 ways to deal with the cut through pass and how to reset the Half Guard position or go to Full Guard.
They're simple options I use as a defense to the guard pass but they've helped me so much in rolling and BJJ competitions.

I've watched dozens of complicated solutions to the knee cut pass...many good ones, but I love the simple suggestion about coming up on your elbow. Thanks for adding that!

Chewy! I just started jiu-jitsu 2weeks ago and I am loving it. Your videos are also such good help. I was watching the video about if new white belts should go in to competition and you said yes if you have at least one move in every position. My question to you could you please put a video together of what you think the best ones would be? So maybe a good lay out of a battle plan? Thanks chewy keep up the fantastic work

How do you get the foot out to pass when they have it clamped in their half guard like that?

You can either shoot it through more outwards, rather than towards opponents armpit. If that doesn't work either, you can "Donkey kick" his upper leg with your other leg. That is a "Legal kick".

Use your other foot to help open up the grip, but make sure you have a good base.

Hey Chewy, I’m a 25 year old white belt that’s been training for about eight months in Vietnam, and I have a question about developing greater control during rolling, and generally learning to be less spazzy. I’m not very new anymore, and I started training for tournaments a few months ago. However, I injured my knee while preparing for my first tournament, had to drop out, and just recently returned to the mats. During my first week back, there was an accident where a training partner passed my guard and rotated me around, but when she came around to get side control my elbow smashed her lip and she needed stitches. Now, I feel awful about this for a number of reasons, but without going into all of that, I’d like to ask your advice on how to develop better control and reduce spazziness. Normally people would suggest flow rolling, but my question is more concerned with full speed rolling and competition prep kind of rolls. I’ve never really had any mishaps while flow rolling, but I’ve just had a problem with spazziness when the speed gets turned up. The accident happened for a number of reasons, and whether or not all of them were my fault or if it was just one of those “accidents happen” moments, I still bear the ultimate responsibility for my body and the safety of my training partners. Luke Nichols just don't go so try hard. Allow yourself to be put in uncomfortable situations while rolling (letting them take a dominant position pretty much) and learn to escape. Focus on defence first then your offence will come into play in later belts
