Just a heads up! U might already know this but I'll throw this out there! If you would of crossed your trailer chains, the chains would of caught your trailer hitch before hitting the ground! If your chains aren't long enough then lengthen them!!! It will save you from disaster! Imagine if your receiver broke at a higher speed let's say on the interstate!? In fact here in Pa, you can get a fine if chains are not crossed! Just a little heads up! Love the vids!

I agree.. make it solid, be heavy but it won't bend as easy as that open box. When you can extend the trailer tongue, reinforce it by making triangles. Link it back to the frame. [__]►--○|[__]_)

Jake, it looks like your spring shackles in the rear of the jeep are bottomed out on the frame and not hitting the bump stops.Not allowing the spring to flex out flat. Get Izzy to bounce up and down on the back and see if the spring is hitting the frame. If that’s the case longer shackles are needed. U need longer rear shackles ASAP. More broken parts are on the horizon especially with the added tongue weight of the trailer.
@iamjake6 жыл бұрын
chedecoys - Really appreciate the suggestion! Thank you!
@thehellboy5676 жыл бұрын
I kinda seen that setup not working for long because of it changing where the weight distribution would be. I believe if you adjust the trailer to be longer instead of the hitch being longer it'll work out much better. these are the thing that create the memories though! if you didn't break it then you wouldn't have a story to tell later.

And the receiver is the thing that the ball hitch slides into. You broke the ball hitch or in your case "pintle hitch.. Not the receiver. I saw that coming also. I build trailers for a living. I didn't say anything because my comments go un-noticed most of the time anyhow. Glad you kept the old hitch with you.
@fataxe16 жыл бұрын
It's because it induces a bending moment. If he put some riggers that mount to the bottom of the bumper it would triangulate it and work. Extending the trailer might make it handle weird.

So many “I knew it would break” comments. Quite frankly, you are lucky the tube broke before it twisted your hitch down. Now, if the attachment to the jeep is sturdy, and that’s not common in jeeps, you can get a thick wall reviver, or even a solid receiver, to prevent this from happening. A much better route is changing the spare tire/rear rack to allow a normal receiver and avoid the abnormal hitch setup. Good luck down the road.

I think if you stick around the cities more it’d be better. To get more content out. Overlanding can still be done. And you’d have your stride back
@Pat2198-p7y6 жыл бұрын
Not surprised. The trailer isn't light as a feather, and that thing is too unstable, meaning is it too long to be like that without lateral supports. It may work out when you are pulling, because the forces go down the trailer and try to "pull apart" the base of the extension, which should hold up, but if you're reversing you're pushing the extension towards the Jeep, and at any slight angle it's easy to get some leaver action that will bend and snap the extension. Same thing could have happened with powerful wind from the side on a motorway, because the hinge would be "pushed" to the side and be under bending forces. Also, if you extend the trailer, don't make the same mistake: if possible make some side supports that go from the outmost part of the extension to the frame at an angle. Using also a not-hollow metal wound help a lot, because it will be stronger to lateral forces and even if it bends, it will do that more "evenly" and it will be more unlikely to snap.

iamjake thank you for replying! That said, I want to point out that by no means I am an expert about trailers, just pointed out logical arguments and some basic physics, so if someone that works in the industry has better advice, go for it. Also I don't want to say that that extension was bad or anything, because the guys that made it for you were really doing something just to help you and probably thought it should hold up fine, but apparently it just wasn't good enough for your application. Good luck with finding a replacement and the prosecution of the trip!

It only broke because it's too much stress on the receiver. The hitch frame should have most of the weight
@insaynbcr6 жыл бұрын
In the video where the extended hitch was made, there were plenty of logical warnings of the amount of stress and leverage that would be applied to it and cause failure. They were not warnings of "if", it was warnings of "when". The trailer tongue should have been modified, not the hitch length. A few good things came of this though: 1. Did not fail on the highway and cause bodily harm to anyone. 2. Did not cause the bumper or bumper mounts to fail, allowing Jade to continue on as before. 3. Somebody learned (the harder way) of how leverage works, and will remedy the problem correctly, and quickly.
@91Bronco6 жыл бұрын
Yeah anybody could of called that one. With like a 2 foot hitch for the trailer would of been safer for whenever you stopped for the night just unhook the trailer and roll it back for the night and prop it up with a block lol.
@spamanator6666 жыл бұрын
Safety chains man, you need two, and they should cross under the hitch to form an X. This would have cradled the hitch and kept it from dragging on the ground when the tube broke. You could have driven it to the side of the road then easily. Next time man, next time.

Physics 101 mate 🙂 Torque =force * distance. You increased the length of the trailer receiver approximately 5 times from the hitch mounting point. Therefore you increased the torque experienced at that point by about 5 times too, basically turning it into a breaker bar. Lucky escape and a life lesson learnt, no harm done. Loving your work though guys from all the way down in Australia.

I'm not going to beat a dead horse here brother, but glad you had your other receiver and made short work of swapping it back over. Luckily that happened while you were stopped and not driving on the highway or that would've been catastrophic. Glad ya'll are safe!

It's definitely a good idea to cross your chains from your trailer to your truck. Left chain to right hook, right chain to left hook. It will helps center the trailer and keep it from jerking left and right in the event that it comes loose. In some states this is required by law.

Looking at it again, your chains are very close to each other on your trailer, so it shouldn't make much difference, but it's probably still a good idea.

thats why you extend the trailer boom not the reciver (had the same thing happen with my dual cab with a single cab tray)

if you don't want the cords to hang so low maybe you could use tipties

Hey I'm loving your adventure! You are living my dream! I was thinking about the trailer situation, I know you have tons of suggestions below, but I think if you split the extended length between the trailer side and the Jeep side of the hitch the stress will be spilt between the two rather than all on one side.

That design could of worked if it had a smaller square tube inside for reinforcement but the wall was too small
