There are many utility that use snap-off blades. Here are a few and my thoughts.

That orange knife that "failed" - check if the plastic latch used to push out the blade have a small portion on the rear end that can be independently pulled back a bit and lock the blade in place.

For 18mm, Olfa with black blades is super sharp. Switch to stainless blades for something duller that won’t scratch glass… Olfa is the standard knife in graphic arts and even for window film installation.

There are actually 5 sizes of snap off blades 9mm, 12.5mm, 18mm, 22mm and 25mm but the 12.5 and 22mm blades are not as popular as the other 3 sizes. My advice if you've never used a snap off knife and want to try it buy the 25mm and 9mm because the 25mm blade is much sturdier and longer so you can use it to cut tougher materials without the blade flexing around too much and you can use the 9mm as an alternative knife to the X-Acto knife for precision cutting. OLFA provides a knife with one of the compact sizes on the market and their knife also has a very small tolerance so if you choose a knife with an auto lock the blade will not have much movement. Tajima knives are also very good and usually have more features but also larger in size than OLFA. The 25mm snap off knives from NT Cutter are not that great and they use different blade lengths but their 18mm and 9mm knives are one of the best especially their metal series but their knives are hard to find outside of Japan.

6:22 The reason the blade goes back so easily is you didn't put the lock on - that slider thing has two parts - pull the back part backwards and it locks the blade - really good, quick to use design.

They work great for sliding all the way out and cutting the foam in Pelican cases to fit around new "hardware" .

Knipex has a really interesting one. The "CutiX". It has a rail that slides out on top of the Blade. Its really brilliant design for safety and function. But my personal favorite is still the Würth 2-K because I often use the Lid-Opener/Screwdriver at the tip for camera plates. Im not sure Würth sells those outside of Germany so you might have to look to Tajima Knives that are somewhat similar. For reference I bought about 8 Würth Knives for myself and at least another 10 for Friends that where amazed by the quality.

18mm Olfa is my tried and true, so many uses and reliable. My only gripe is replacement blades are expensive. I stay away from the cheap ones, they are single use.

Olfa is the reference standard for snap-off knives. I own a bunch. Does anyone else also own the x-long Olfa? It's like cutting with a sward. Unexpectedly useful. Their 1" Heavy Duty knife is everything the name implies. The standard 18mm models and blades can be had at Lowes. Inexpensive.

Have a look at the Fat Max 18mm east snap, the handle is articulated so when it is activated it snaps the blade and the piece that breaks off is caught by a small magnet, its cool and the only snag ive found is other small metal objects getting picked up by the magnet, good video, thanks

Over time I've become a fan of re- sharpening,specially the expensive blades. Obviously it depends on the use,but for leatherworking/ cutting mild stuff at home,re-sharpening its fine and it only takes you like 10 sec no joke.

@@pequodexpress I do just the tip and maybe 1-2 cm from there back. I break them off when I feel they are not worth re-sharpening with a couple of strokes on a piece of leather

Somewhat lazy review. The orange cutters have a dual thumb sliders... when you click to the lenght you want, you slide the second thumb slider back, and it locks the blade in place.

Had the very first fatmax someone liked so much it went for a walk, so bought another one but it was mark two, it has become a tool box ornament, the slider worked for a little while but try I as might it just will not push the blade forwards anymore

Recently bought a Fujima Rock Hard with the pry blade, and a Knipex Cutix. Both are outstanding. I need to find some Fiskars to see what they’re all about.

I’ve been using Olfa pl-1 and lenox xc250 best knifes hands down, extra blades in both and 2 bits in the Lenox aswell.

You missed the best knife. Tajima snap off blade knife the one with a red handle and the grey wheel to lock the blade. Tajima is made in Japan and hands down has the sharpest blade I have ever seen and used on a snap off knife. Tajima is around $20-$30 and a pack of 10 blades is $15-$20.

I have a 9 mm like the small Orange, and I don't think it's single use. On mine, the back slides out just like the larger orange one revealing a blade storage area. And you remove the blade by sliding it out the back and insert a new one. Also, on mine, the black plastic backcap has a small slot for snapping the blade as needed.

Very helpful. I have a Boardwalk brand which looks a lot like the Stanley FatMax. I could not figure out what to measure to determine what size replacement blades fit my Boardwalk brand handle. Can you or some of your viewers explain that? I haven't been able to find it online.

For all of you die hard Olfa fans out there, I seriously don't know what all the hype is about, I've bought 2 of the exact same Olfa box cutter knives (H-Type 151BG along with a pack of 25mm Excel Black) (just to see if i got unlucky with my 1st copy), both of my knives had horrendous finishing on both the stainless steel AND the soft handle so I decided to go look at other Olfas in a hardware store and to my suprize theirs too also had horrendous finishing (for some strange reason their small 9mm sizes don't suffer a bad finishing problem) even the pack of blades i bought, the case it self scratched and the blades maybe 50% of them had scratches, everything was sealed brand new, never buying another Olfa knife ever again lol

Unfortunately for the fatmax stanley knife the locking screw can get easily lost, and then the knife is useless.

Gotta try the new Knipex Cutix. It’s awesome and my favorite. Just came out last year but a bit pricey for a snap off knife.

The Knipex Cutix is even more expensive than some folding knives with D2 or 440c steel and much more expensive than other snap-off knives so for me the 25mm snap off knife is much more worth buying than Cutix.

You can buy it wit no regret. It will be well spend money. I use it since 2 months. Only Tajima ddc560n can relate …

@@efektmurowany I disagree with your opinion, the stabilizer bar on the Cutix is a great feature but it can also be a drawback when cutting thick material that crumbles easily for example styrofoam so it can be quite difficult to get a smooth cut as the stabilizer bar provides more friction and resistance. For me the 25mm snap off knife is much more worth buying as the blade is sturdier making it stable enough to cut through fragile materials without flexing around like an 18mm blade and it also significantly cheaper than Cutix. Jeff from homerenoision was able to cut drywall completely not just the paper and on youtube there are also videos where people use a 25mm snap off knife to open young coconuts, cut car tires and even use them as throwing knives i can show you the video link if you want.

@@Yudi.Hilmawan quite interesting point. I can agree with your opinion. 18mm is not for heave duty tasks. I use milwaukee fastback with irvin bi-metal blades. I have never used 25mm snapoff knife - I have to check it out. For styro or wool in europe we use bigger knifes like „freund 02055000”. Thanks for your input in the topic.

@@efektmurowany There is usually always a tool specifically made for a specific job but if you need a utility knife that can cover a wider range of tasks then the 25mm snap off knife is one of the best because apart from the regular blade you can also use hook and saw blades from OLFA, unsegmented/solid blades from Tajima and serrated blades from Rapid Edge. OLFA provides 25mm knives in one of the most compact sizes on the market their knives also have very small tolerances so their auto lock knives have less blade movement than most other brands. Tajima is also very good because their knife handles have more features but their knives are usually bigger than OLFA's. And if you are a left handed user, then Hultafors can be an option because they provide a 25mm knife whose blade can be reversed so that left handed users can use the knife more comfortably. For me the 25mm and 9mm knives are a must buy starting knife if they want to try snap off knives whether for work or crafts.

I agree with you instead of wasting money to buy cutix better buy 25mm snap off knife if you prefer a more compact size knife then OLFA is the best choice but if you want knife handle with more features then go for Tajima.
