These are nice older extractors mainly because they are a little harder then many modern stubby spiral extractors, Many newer extractors dull after just a couple of uses so they do not over expand the bolt you are trying to extract but these older units are harder (but may cause more splitting) but many times that is what you need.

just ran across your review of the bluepoint easy outs, a little history is in order bluepoint did not make that set, it was originally made by a company called 'rodick' or "rodic" i don't recall the spelling. Rodick came out with that set with the same tray back in the early 70's and they are excellent for what they were designed to do, that being removal of pipe fittings. they have approx the same taper as NPT taper, so that the expansion is nearly equal and that keeps them from binding up small pipe fitting bit, especially brass fittings. the reason why the smaller sizes are pressed into the hex drive is to allow for them to break up inside the hex leaving something to get ahold of and twist back out, unlike others that break off and leave a difficult job of removal of the broken end of the easyout. i bought my first set off a mac tool truck in '75, and of course snapon really trash talked the tool, much like they did the "roto" head SK ratchet that was popular at the time... only to have them bring out their version a few years later when the patent ran out. skip forward to the late 80's and everyone was making a roto head ratchet, not only in 3/8 but also in 1/4 and 1/2 inch drive as well. (i would love to get my hands on a 3/4" drive roto head ratchet, so let me know if you know of one... i digress... hell i am getting old so i have the right to jump around, right? fwiw, rodick made the smaller set at first, then by the late 70's they came out with the larger sizes in a case much like the smaller set, but the smaller set case slipped into the center and made for a complete set with the larger plastic cover. iirc the smaller set sold for about 25 bucks in '75 and the expansion set was another 50 bucks or so when it came out. the originals were quite hard, and would bite into a grade 8 bolt without damage to the spiral flute/teeth. i still have my original small set from '75, sans the small press in sizes that have long since been broken, and replaced with modern units, and when the hanson set came out, i bought the large set and hey have served me well. having said that they are a bit softer end hard bolts are indeed hard on the flute/teeth. thanks for posting the review, i brought back memories of having bought my set all those years ago, and how many countless broken bolts and brass npt fittings they removed, saving me a butt load of time over the years. i still remember what that set felt like in my hand when i was first looking at the set i ended up purchasing.

I had that exact set and spun all of the smaller 4 sizes inside themselves. After replacing all of them several times SO came out with what looks like the Hansen version which I bought. I have had no issues with those yet (25+ years). I like to use straight flute extractors when I can first. Believe it or not, for smaller sizes, I have had great results with the double ended reverse drill/extractor found in the "as seen on tv" section at WM, a 4 piece set. (Speed outs)

I have some similar to the oem tool version you have, have you had any luck with those? Mine seem to thread into a stud, then start expanding it, and locking the stud in the bore like you mentioned.

I have the HF current set. It is limited in that it only has 5 sizes. But it has the sizes I needed so I bought it. So far, so good. Been working fine.
