Thanks for this great feedback. You made my day! I believe if "forget about finding that darn main idea sentence" (which sometimes is not even expressed in the paragraph) and if you focus on understanding the content, the main idea will just pop up... it is easier said than done... it takes practice. But I'm glad this video put you on the right track. Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope you enjoy the rest of the channel! :D

Maybe that's why I find some academic papers difficult to read. Some even use super long sentence that I lost track of the idea. My attention span is short so I dont really like writers who dont go straight to the point and beat about the bush. If you really wanna do that, sure, but at least put a topic sentence at the front or end of the paragraph so at least I have an idea what you're gonna say.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, TsukiLight. Thanks for watching and leaving the comment. I agree. Some authors tend to "write to impress" rather than just go to the point. In a way, that's part of being human--we can communicate our ideas in many styles, some of which can be pretty "literary" or "poetic." My recommendation is, when you face a really long sentence, is to identify the smaller parts. Also, focus on understanding what the author is trying to teach or explain rather than the structure of the writing. I know it's easier said than done but, with a lot of practice, we always get better and better at understanding even the more convoluted writers. :D

@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 8 жыл бұрын
+JohnMartinez71 Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!.. and you're correct. Transition words are used to show how ideas relate to one another and how they are organized in the paragraph; therefore, they guide the reader and often serve as hints or clues to where the important information is. I talk briefly about transitions here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZLOpKSAeMx0g6M but more videos are coming up soon going into more detail. I'll also be sure to make this connection between transitions and the main idea. :)

This is so helpful. I used to the a class of toefl, the teachers there so quite robotic. Why? They always only say the main idea or gist idea is always at the beginning of the first paragraph. But when I practise, I know it is not always right. Sometimes in the first paragraph, after a several sentences of introduction, the main idea then appears. Or it doesn't state at all, I need to guess it based on the major points stated by the rest of the paragraphs. Maybe fit writing, which is more technical, it is always better to put the gist idea at the end of the first sentence. But now I know it doesn't have a fixed rule. It can be anywhere, implied or directly stated. Even it can be splitted at different location of same paragraph. Really helpful thank you.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 6 жыл бұрын
That's right. The central point of the passage is often (but not always) stated at the beginning of a passage. A paragraph also has a main idea which is not always stated. The important this is to read for the content and let the ideas guide you. Thanks for the great comment! :D

Igneous Rocks What are igneous rocks and how do they form? Well, igneous rocks are solid objects that are made out of iron. They are formed by volcanic eruptions. The eruption causes the volcano to overflow as extra magma soars up from underground. Then magma pops out from the volcano. This magma then slides down the volcano. As it cools down, it becomes more solid. As a ramification, this forms igneous rocks.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 2 жыл бұрын

Dear sir, there is a language test called IELTS and i have given it for more than 8 times. in all my attempts i get very low band in reading module, we can say i fail the reading module each time. the problem is lack of comprehension. can you please guide me how i can improve it.? i do read a lot but i am wondering why my reading speed is sluggish as well as comprehension problem. plz help me.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed your comment a few weeks ago. For some reason, sometime I miss messages here. I understand your frustration with IELTS. I've heard many of my students say they passed one section of the test but didn't pass reading or writing. I recommend you watch the whole series on reading. You have the whole series at snaplanguage.io/esl/b-level/reading/index.html As you move through each page, you'll see the videos that go with each section. (The videos are also at kzbin.info -- scroll down the page to "Advanced Reading Course," where you will see the four playlists with all the videos.) I also have some live streams covering reading if you're interested: - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eobcY6KnlJiGhKc - kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGKqYaSirNqHipY - kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIjMY4dtgdqpp7c MOST IMPORTANTLY, you must read a variety of topics and formats (e.g., newspaper articles, textbook chapters, blogs, short stories, novels). Read as much as you can, but *focus on understanding the content!* Especially students who are practicing for tests tend to read focusing on the vocabulary and grammar, but you should always read to understand what the writer wants you to learn. Also, practice taking notes including only the important points in the passage (the bullet points). The videos I mentioned cover this idea of reading to find patterns of information and reading focusing on understanding the content. I hope this helps!

I get marked down for implying main ideas. It's maddening as the word count is already low. If I state the main ideas I get marked down for not including everything or not giving enough detail. Could you give any tips? Thanks.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 6 жыл бұрын
To figure out the main idea of a paragraph (stated or implied), it is important to find patterns of information in it. First figure out what the topic is (what the paragraph is about). Then figure out what the author is saying about it. The information in the paragraph will guide you. If it is a well written paragraph, you should be able to state the main idea in one simple sentence without including any minor detail. It takes time and practice. The more you read trying to understand what the author is trying to tell you, the better you get at it. Just keep reading to learn the content; it gets easier with time.

Hi, Usama. I'm not sure what you mean... have you watch all of our videos about "the paragraph?" It has a lot of content on main ideas... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJewi56Qi56cic0

I appreciate your effort to clarify how to find the main ideas. Now, I am so glad to learn how to find the main idea. Muayad Aziz A braillist at Frankline High School in Seattle, WA.

Hi! Thanks for leaving a comment. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "application of ideas," though. Could you clarify what you mean... the context and such? Thanks for watching! I hope you are enjoying the rest of the channel :D

I am almost done with the core of the reading portion of the channel. I will eventually be posting "follow-up videos" for the various topics (including main ideas) to expand on the topic and provide some examples of how to apply your understanding to other example paragraphs. I think they will cover what you mentioned. Thanks again for the comment! :D

+Thierno D There more you know, the easier it gets, so it takes a lot of practice. As far as "where the main idea is" is concerned, if you read to understand the content, you will be able to identify the main idea--wherever it is. Stay curious and keep on reading!

why " the main idea in the middle of paragraph" is not mentioned in this video? sometimes paragraph start with supporting details sentences and after that, we will see the Main Idean sentence and then we have supporting sentences again.
@snaplanguage
@snaplanguage 8 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I did not have any examples of the main idea sentence in the middle of the paragraph or split into two locations in the paragraph due to time limitations. (People abandon videos that go much longer than 5-6 minutes. :-/) As mentioned at 0:54 "the main idea can be anywhere in the paragraph" and at 0:26 "sometimes it's not even there" (in the paragraph). Thanks for watching and leaving this comment!
