I went fishing at the beach this morning with two Ugly Stiks and an eight foot Penn Pursuit Pursuit II Graphite spinning rod with my Penn Conflict 4000 in the reel seat. This rod is part of Penn's Pursuit II Combo that I purchased a few weeks ago. It came with a 6000 reel, but I haven't put the braid on it yet.
The rod is rated for lures 3/4 oz. to 2 oz. I was throwing a 2 oz. Tsunami Buster Red Tail Jig in the surf. On my third or fourth cast, I heard a SNAP! I looked at my rod and it had broken below the second guide from the tip. I hope Penn will honor their one-year warranty. I buy all my reels from Penn, but if they don't make this right I am going to have to start using a different company for my fishing gear.

In 55 years fishing I broke a rod only once, and I knew it was my fault. Cheap fishing combos can’t last a lifetime, but normally it is the reel that fails. Cheap reels are not worth the repair most of the time. Cheap rods can be passed to grand children after your death and survive another life. I have some wooden rods here, that are way older than I, and they still make them. Of course modern rods can be made almost impossible to break, but that is not the reason why we buy them. We choose a rod for the purpose, for its action, sometimes for its stiffness which is kind of contradictory with resistance to abuse. Nevertheless, if you break a new rod that you purchased from a reputable shop, it will be replaced without question because the money they make with a client is not from a rod. Anyone with a pretty complete fishing gear will tell you where the money goes. I’d gladly give a rod to make a new client.

Watch how you store and transport rods. Could have hit rod against something causing it to have a stress fracture. Like others have commented, wash your gear down after each trip. The epoxy on the guides will break down over time and you can even see stress cracks on the epoxy. I’ve also seen people whack their rods on a back cast with metal jigs/bucktails and snap on the cast. Hope penn made it right for you

Yes, I agree. I think maybe because he doesn't know how to cast, the way he casts makes the buck tails go across the top if the rod, and struck it. Maybe not the last cast. I broke a very expensive fly rod by hitting it with the weight, but the company replaced it.

He has toojen great care of the rod and reel. Look back to the part where you really bent it a little too much. Because rods don't break by itself. Who was it Casper. Yep mhmm. Take care of ur stuff

So, you have used Penn for a long time and for a one time possible defective piece you are going to never use them again if they don’t honor the warranty? Penn has great equipment and they are good at honoring their warranties and they have a great reputation. They compete with some of the really expensive pieces for less than half the price and perform just as well if not better in my humble opinion. I think the the video is unfair as you said it yourself you have used the product for a long time with no issues and you have one bad experience and you want to talk bad about the company, you just pushed me away from your channel. It’s great to report issues but if Penn refused to replace it and you went out there and tried it again and had the same issue, I would have respected the review or experience you were sharing.

July 9, 2021----Strange.....was stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska for 2 years and bought my first Fenwick rod back in '77 for salmon fishing. Still got it and still using it. Then picked up a another, this one as an ultra light for my Garcia Mitchell 308. Still got and using it. This was around 1980 when stationed in Calif. Then bought a used one from a guy who sells a lot of stuff for $10 and good for bass/trout fishing. That was 2 years ago.

looks like the line got wrapped around the tip before you casted it and when you casted it broke. thats why i always check before i cast and make sure the line at the tip is free moving through the guides and not hung up. before you cast if you put the tip up toward the sky facing the sunny side you can see if the line is good. that and it being a inexspensive budget line penn rod is why it broke. you have to be more careful. luckly its a penn and they have good warranty.

I won't say there are no such things as faulty units...but, i read reviews and see videos like this and have to wonder if it is user error or a quality control issue. A lot of people do things that can cause a rod to snap like grabbing the rod mid way up to lift a fish out of the water or pulling too hard on a snag. Reels often seize up because saltwater fisherman don't clean after each use or maintain their reels. I'm not sponsored by Penn but i use a lot of their equipment and haven't had any issues yet, i say yet because as i said in the beginning it does happen. In this video i didn't see the rod bending so badly as to cause a break, there were some weeds on it but i never saw the rod loaded any more than it would be with a fish on.

A rod wont just break on a cast, yes it does happen dont get me wrong but it usually is the fishermans mistake. Broke a spinning rod on a cast because my line wrapped around the guide and that is the usual culprit. Other times the rod could have been scratched or if it had fallen and made a crack, it would break too. Just take care of your gear and be aware when casting👌🏻

You can't bend graphite like fibreglass, has to be kept low so the flex isn't concentrated in the tip. You want most of flex in the mid/bottom section, which people who have only used fibreglass rods find counterintuitive. My son just snapped his brand new graphite on his first fish and now he knows what not to do. What did Penn do about it?

Lots of weed piled up on the beach. Most likely you snagged a weed pile behind you when making your cast. You had weed on your lure. The extra tension when you cast your lure at maximum weight was too much for the rod. Modern graphite rods cannot withstand that.

The best reason for not buying combos . They are cheap for a reason...even if you go with a Diawa BG, in a combo, the rod is usually crap. I'd rather spend more on the rod than on the reel. Personally, I've never broken a fishing rod, while fishing. I won't speak of getting chopped off in power windows, leaving a rod on top of the car and heading out into heavy rush hour traffic...nor the rush to leave a campsite after a grizzly encounter. Glad they were all TFO rods though.

Not surprising a free rod that comes with a ~$50 spinning reel is junk. A whole 6k pursuit 2 combo only cost around $70. Add to that graphite rods can be brittle. Hit one hard enough on car door, trunk, tailgate, ceiling, rock, pier rail, etc and it can explode on a cast or next use.
