Snaring Newfoundland Rabbits on Trail Camera

This video will show you how smart rabbits/snowshoe hares can be around snares and around pen sets. The rabbit has actually figured out how to pull my snares closed with its mouth so it can safely enter the pen to feed on the birch tips inside. To date I have tested 3 different natural baits on the hares. They are Birch, Salted Hay and Red Osier Dogwood. The rabbits feeding in this pen go for the birch tips only. In the end I decided to increase the diameter of my snare in hopes of making the hare feel safe to place its head through the snare which he ends up doing. Because of KZbin Guide Lines I cut this video short but will link the full video clips of the rabbit being caught in the snare on camera to my FaceBook page which I will link in this description once I upload the video to my FB page. Give me a few more hours to make that happen.

Pretty cool video. I've been snaring rabbits for more than 50 years and I've always known that there are 'cute' rabbits. I've always believed that squirrels were the reason for many of my tripped snares as well. Now I'm convinced that rabbits are a lot more 'cute' than I thought they were. Well done!!!

Glad you enjoyed it, it's a great educational adventure with the rabbits. This year marks my 50th year of rabbit snaring and when you think you know it all, that is when you figure out you've got so much more to learn. I'll soon be running more bait Vs bait challenges with the trail camera, no snares just seeing what food sources the rabbits prefer around this parts. So far birch is in the lead Vs hay/salted hay and red osier dogwood.

I remember snaring rabbits in central NFLD growing up there, I caught my first when I was ten years old, unfortunately also caught my neighbours dog by the paw, which resulted in his paw amputated, I felt so bad about that. But one time my brother and I were checking our snares far from town in a valley, the rabbit pulled his own leg completely out of his own body, A week later we caught the rest of him with three legs. Rabbit trapping was one of my favourite hunting pastimes, I snared rabbits for years in the Northwest Territories. Up there you had to check them daily or the wolves would take them all.

Here the predators will get them as well. Pine Martens take a lot of my rabbits. I try to get out a first light to start checking the snares.

Many years ago when we snared rabbits we always burned birch bark with our snares in the fire to get rid of the scent as well as the shine of the wire. Everyone knows rabbits are clever....just ask Bugs. Great video.

so i have a fence just like this and rabbit problems. I put the fence a little wider and fold the bottom down, putting some dirt over, and then sprinkle red hot chile powder around the cage. Works for me.

Hey Clay, I want to have you explain to us th viewers is there certain differences, that causes you to use th name Hare, instead of Rabbit, for these long earned animals. I'm told by several people in my lifetime that th Snowshoe Rabbit could be titled a Hare, for several reasons. Please, could you make a video on this topic for us?? This is the snowshoe hare or varying hare and some refer to it as the snowshoe rabbit. Here in Newfoundland we refer to it as a Rabbit in general talk of conversations, (like hey guys, we should go set some rabbit snares or look there's a rabbit.) But we all know it's really a hare. Rabbit I guess is slang for hare here.... I'm not sure how other provinces and states refer to them? Every place is unique. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador we size moose by points not spread like they do in other areas. Partly because it was rare to see people display moose antlers as trophies, we counted the points because we would typically cut off the points to make handles out of them for knives and utensils. The plates or palms of the antlers were made into belt buckles... The more points you had the more you could do with them. The true trophy of a moose was how tender the meat is not the width of the rack you display on a wall.

I think so too, I actually did a short series of videos last March with a rabbit that had been snared by my neighbour and had broken the snare. It was only about 200 yards from where I had this pen set, so it could have been the same rabbit.

@@NLGhostWolf For sure.We had a cold snap the last couple of days without much snow on the ground.I managed to get 4 in my 10 or so snares last night.Today it's still cold and snowed about 25 cm.I will check in the morning to see how that goes.

That was pretty cool to watch. Guess old Bugs Bunny isn't as dumb as people thought....lol. I am not sure how you could stop that from happening other then maybe putting a chin up stick that would hold the snare more securely. Probably wouldn't work as then the rabbit would see the stick and probably want to eat it and then pull on the snare...Not sure if your camera can take longer videos but maybe set it for a 1 min burst. That way you can see more of what happens. Looking forward to seeing your Facebook link pop up so I can go watch it in it's entirety. Stay safe and warm out there.

I never thought rabbits would pull the wire aside but you caught one in the act on video. I made a pound with the frame and put in four gates. On the first few nights, they were all around but none went in. I used birch. I brought my trail cam home thinking that I would have a load of footage but I had the camera set to high. My fault. When I went back the next morning, I had two caught. Both were dead. Successful experiment.
