4 Best Types of Rabbit Snare Pens

Here are 4 different types of snare pens I use for snaring rabbits or Snowshoe Hares on the Island of Newfoundland. However the severe Newfoundland Winter Weather has been playing Havoc with my sets. The 3 day storm we had this week didn't help matters at all. Thankfully the Ski-doo Tundra 600 ACE LT was up to the challenge.

Yeah Those Pens Work Well for sure, but as you say a real pain when you have to do it all over again every couple days, fine looking box seems to work very well, thanks for the videos Charlie all the best and have a good evening,

Yes it's been a trying couple of weeks due to the ever changing snow levels. It's either snowing or raining. I would love to get a 4-5 day window where we get no new snow or rain. Still fun getting out though.

Another dandy video, well done. I used to love getting few rabbits in pounds. I would just bring along my big pruners and cut few nice bushy small spruce and then cut few doors in with my small pruners.

Oh Len I fully agree. I carried both the big and small pruning shears for years. They are the ideal snaring tool. So much so that I had made a holster for the small ones that I wore on my belt. The big ones I just carried in my hands. An thanks for watching. I don't know what ever happened to that holster I made. So many moves in the Military, it was hard to keep track of everything. I hope I find them again one day.

Another great and interesting video Charlie. Just wondering if you can offer some advise as to where to find some cabins for rent in the summer in the Stephenville area. We are planning on taking a trouting trip this summer to the west coast and would like to stay in the area. If you know of anyone in the area (Stephenville, Barachois Brook, Gallants, or St. Georges) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well this year would mark 30 years from when I left here and joined the Military, so there has been many changes. I will have to ask around and I will get back to you on where would be good cabin rent locations in the area. One off the top of my head would be Doone Lodge in the Black Duck Siding area, just minutes away from Stephenville Crossing. Home of the Big White Bull Moose... It's located on the Harry's River which is a great salmon fishing river. It's under new ownership now so I'm not sure what kind of reputation they now have or prices... Give me a bit and I'll see what I can come up with.

The FXR might be getting a set of tracks but I would never sell my ski-doo. I need it for the places I go. The Mule just can't go where my sled goes. Not even close....

Thanks, much appreciated. Good to hear you're doing good with the rabbits. It's been a tough couple of weeks here. There are days I go up back and my snares are under 10" of snow... Every day I had to adjust one way or the other. What I should have done and what I'll do the next time I put out some snares is, I'll check then in the late afternoon. That way when the rabbits start moving just before dark the snares should be in better working order. Still loves just getting out and seeing what been moving around.

First time viewer. A few good tips there snaring winter bunnies. Think I'll head on down the bunny trail and try a few of your tips. I like to use a jump twig, works for me.

Yes I've seen rabbit snares set many different ways over the years and they all seem to work. Once I got down to the bigger branches of the tree I decided to stop there because I remember as kids having to go back down face first to try and retrieve a boot or two that got stuck in those lower branches... Wasn't fun then and now that I'm in my 50's, it surely wouldn't be enjoyable. LOL

Hey, Charlie really enjoy your vids. I just realized your last name was White. We lived in Churchill Falls back in the early 70’s. Had my 1st ski doo. Your adventures bring the great memories back. My dad worked there in the 60's but he was missing being with mom and me so he quit. I'm glad you like the videos. I know a Ricky White who grew up across the street from me. He's about 56-58 years old. I believe he's living in Ontario. Not sure if it's the same Ricky. I truly don't think Ricky ever worked in Churchill though. There are a lot of White's here in Stephenville. 19 children in dads family alone. Folks had big family's back then. I'm glad the videos brings back great memories of your own. Yes, they work great for winter time rabbits. Not so good when the rabbits have other food sources.

Nicee Charlie, all my life snared rabbits for food every year. I know back in the younger days I could bring home from Sandy Badger hundreds of them to sell a trip if you happened to be off work during the winter. Usually 2 or 3 fellows would go up in old log cabin we built in couple days for that purpose and we took all those sets for granted because they were good producers and the darkness/plus browse would draw and bring back rabbits all the time. We always called them birch browse pounds and underbrush birch pounds. Guess, like the dialect, there are difference even here, in the province from one place to another due to the isolation eh? Those days are long gone now but the bottom line still basically the same. Rabbit soup!! I'm retired, still catching rabbits for sale and to eat and still for family! Good stuff!. Better watch sometime jumping on that snow pile you don't fall into a sinkhole and lose your sled ahahh! Too bad to lose that nice box !!eheh

Nothing like getting out snaring rabbits. Like you I've been doing it all of my life. Every year I need to get out and snare some rabbits. I've had a very busy retirement thus far. Had a lot of commitments that keep me from going flat out in the woods. When Mom and Dad were both alive I who take them to all their doctors appointments and treatments which averaged about 3-4 times per week and then into the City of Corner Brook once a month. This coming fall I should have more time to focus on getting out on some longer adventures like a week of fall snaring rabbits for the winter when they are easier to catch and I'm not having to adjust my snares daily. I'm going to have a very busy spring and summer but once that's completed then I'll have time to get back into the great outdoors.

Oh yes, can't shoot what you can't see. Dog's don't like pushing rabbits pass you time and time again without success. Can't get the success if you can never get to see the bunnies... All great fun in the great outdoors though...

Not sure, I've heard people have success with hay dipped in saltwater... You could also try rabbit food pellets (i have never tried the rabbit pellets but heard you can buy it at pet stores and feed stores.

Charlie you get many grouse out that way in your snares? Don't see much bird sign in the videos. Pretty open out there in places you'd think there would be a few ptarmagin.. should have a cast iron Wednesday fried rabbit.. Take care.. 👍

when we snare out west we do or at least did. I haven't snared out west now in 35 years. Now what we call out west here on the west coast near the Stephenville area is actually south. But I think people started referring to it as out west because it took you south to Port Aux Basque where you catch the ferry to head west on the mainland of Canada. But we use to snare about an 1 and a half from here and always caught a nice few grouse in snares. I didn't catch any this year but did the year before. Yes we have ptarmigan here both rock and the willows and grouse both the spruce and the ruffled.

Not 100% sure. But when I first bought my sled the boys gave me a good walk around and that's the way they showed me to start it.

haha. Yes we have some wonderful country here. Lots to see. There's something here for every level of snowmobiler. My days of playing in the mountains are well behind me. I just like the old sled trails and cross country traveling for me.
