You can buy tickets, very limited, to their live recording sessions. You would love to see them live. It is a collective of musicians. Usually it is abut 9 musicians when they tour. Nothing is ever the same live and you never know where the music will go. Usually no playlist and who solos is decided by a nod of the head. At times one of the musicians will go off on a musical rant and the rest will pick it up and they’ll go off in a different direction. Been addicted since 2011.

The bass player Micheal League is the leader, and writes a lot of their songs. I know at least two of the horn players wrote songs for this album. Also the keyboardist Corey Henry is an alien. I'm sure you guys would like just about all of their stuff.

After your last Snarky Puppy reaction, I knew you'd get to this.Never tire of watching this.What I find mad is that not only can Larnell Lewis (drums) play this, but that he learned this on the plane, flying in as a last-minute replacement (so the story goes ,and I have no reason to dispute it).....excellent one guys..(note to self: I must get back to more Zappa reactions)...btw, I have no idea what breed the snarky puppy is 🙂

Reminded me initially of Leonid and Friends, a new-to-me ensemble also featuring very proficient players, but mostly doing covers, e.g. Chicago. First time seeing SP in a setting like this, iirc, but totally wowed. Completely captivated by the spare jazzy piano and spare drums interlude, then blown away by what it morphed into, a mind-blowing kind of dialogue between keys and drums. The synth/piano man's neighbour looked to react much as i did. What fun. lololol. Breed? Trew my node, same as always. Time signature? 1:52

Fusion jazz, composed by Michael League
@thage7729
@thage7729 Жыл бұрын
Time sig: 5/4; verse is a slow 5/4 and the middle section is still 5/4, but twice as fast. On one of their live versions, Michael League (composer) said, “This is our version of ‘dub step’.” Cory Henry’s keyboard solo was improv… he was playing keyboards since he was VERY young…. like ‘prodigy’ young All the audience members are wearing ‘Silent Disco’ bluetooth headphones which get their signal from the control room mixing board’s main feed. The “music score” is a midi file composed in a program called Logic, which is delivered to each member; each member is required to learn basically all the parts to keep the parts aligned within the song. as for the puppy, look at the logo: It’s a Boston Terrier. You’ll see one on the cover of their first album. Note: This was one of three albums they recorded in the same year. They also recorded ‘Sylva’ with the Metropole symphony in France followed by ‘Family Dinner pt. 2’ near New Orleans later that year.

Fabulous Video, Great Reaction. As you said, planned and scored with space for improvisation. Listen to the album there is enough variety. IMO Snark Puppy isn't one breed of dog, it's an ensemble of different breeds, talents, and temperaments. Wikipedia says: _"Snarky Puppy combines a variety of jazz idioms, rock, world music, and funk"._ The keyboard solo was Corey Henry, the guy next to him was Shaun Martin, who's no slouch himself, he has 6 Emmys. The credits for 'Lingus': _'Written, arranged, and produced by Michael League.'_ 5 of the 8 tracks on "We Like It Here" were written by Michael League. AFAIK, the 'audience' were real people, not 'suits'. I think I recognise one is from the UK, but would only put $5 on it. The story about the drummer Larnell Lewis is, he was drafted in very late when their 'usual' drummer failed to get his visa in time.(The band leader, Michael League had decided to record in Europe because he felt there was a good 'vibe') Larnell learned two songs before boarding the 'plane to the Netherlands, then the other seven on the 5½ hour flight. The car sent to pick him up at the airport failed to find him.He arrived two hours late for the recording session. _No Pressure_ 😱 On this video, Larnell demonstrates what he means by _'Learning the Drums'_ _'Larnell Lewis Hears A Song Once And Plays It Perfectly'_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHq6aGWMjbKDftE 11m31 [Note: Larnell actually listens twice, first time without making any notes] Best Wishes. ☮

1st half 1st section in a half-time slow 5, 1st half 2nd section in a quicker 5. Repeat the half time then stay in the quicker 5 till the 2nd half and the keys solo, all of which is in 4/4 but really hard to follow...and if you try, you kinda miss out on what Cory is doing on the keys.

@@D0rlisok The music I am talking about is original, not retro like Snarky Puppy. If you ever listened to jazz fusion from the '70's you would understand. Take your blinkers off and delve, lol. Incidently, next week, i think, one of those bands will be featured on here, and I think you'll recognise the similarity, in drumming at least.

@@D0rlisok No music is totally original, everyone has and uses influences. I think you can go back even further to Miles Davis and pick out influences. '70's jazz fusion bands like Weather Report, Return to forever, Brand X, Al Di Meola sounds are all in Snarky Puppy. It's no criticism Snarky Puppy have more brass than some of these bands. You may have to use your "ear", it's not copying but style your looking for.

Older material by now but still impressive indeed. Core Henry's solo is from outher space. He appears not to have a dexterous hand and doubles his own lead synth. Cory has a gospel and soul background and his solo material has a very different feel. No suits in da room. Just collective members and friends/relatives I believe. I call this fusion revival, or neo fusion. As a lover of fusion from the 70s, 80s and beyond I am thrilled a whole new generation of professional musicians has rediscovered and reinvented the genre.

Bass player writes most...If Nimrud used the language of music to build his tower then diversity of tongue would not have happen and assurance of dry feet next time it flooded would be achieved... It is basically fusion big band...everybody is kitted up with phones and they are mostly friends and followers of the band....Most of the musicians are fly by nights and are hired for the production... If i had a credit card I would deliver requests for much of the fusion bands who inspire this bands musical direction..

I have never listened through this whole tune until now. I am a jazz lover and a jazz player. I love complicated stuff that makes me wanna get it down on paper. So, I should love Snarky Puppy, but there is something about it that makes me loose interest. It is almost disgusting how perfect this is. I don't know why I don't like it, though I am overwhelmed by how good they are. Maybe I need to analyze this one, write it down, learn to play it. Then I would probably love it. The keyboard solo is one of the sickest I've ever heard. Almost Chick Corea quality :D

This is Big Band Jazz (updated somewhat). The improv is all scheduled. They may allow for extended solos and then there are visual or musical ques to bring the band back in. The time signatures can be all over the place since it is all written out. Now for some other wild solos check out Phil Collin's Big Band doing AWB's "Pick Up The Pieces". Yeah, THAT pick up the pieces!
@farmkidspm
@farmkidspm 2 жыл бұрын
If you pay attention to the rhythm starting with the keyboard solo, you will notice that there is an 8-bar repeating pattern. When the bass comes in, you can hear the chord progression in that rhythm as well. Cory plays 19 rounds of that 8-bar chord progression, then on the 19th, you see him nod to Larnell. That's the cue that he's done and to bring in the rest of the band. The other solos were all planned 4 bars or 8 bars or whatever, but the extended keyboard solo was just until Cory decided he was done.
@rk41gator
@rk41gator 2 жыл бұрын
@@farmkidspm thanks. Yes, I saw that head bob/connection and figured it was the cue. I know Genesis often uses musical cues to bring in the band; especially when Phil and Chester do their drum duet and it roll into Los Endos. Very effective transition. Almost shocking but very cool.

Dark. there's a story about the drummer here learning this piece on an airplane as he flew to the studio where this was being recorded. just mind-blowing. apparently the bassist is the brain-child of this band. all the way through it's jazz at its highest improv form. what "breed" is Snarky Puppy? doesn't it have to be a mutt from the pound? i mean ... y'all, there are a lot of mothers up there jammin. i'm just saying. ;-)

Plus they sure can meander all over the place. I’d love to see them pull all the disparate sections together into a real composition.
