Can I add George Duke - some of his quirky funky stuff. This transported me back. I felt an enjoyment listening to this that I felt when I was getting into jazz via jazz fusion when I was younger. My taste is coloured by the 70’s and 80’s, and hinders my enjoyment of the new stuff. This though just sounded ‘right’ from the outset. Right up my street.

Crazy thing is… they played this numerous times to record the song. This version was picked and Corey Henry (solo keyboardist) protested because he didn’t think it was the best he could do. If this wasn’t his best then I can only imagine what his “best” would be…. It’s mind boggling that he played one of the most legendary solos to date and yet it “wasn’t his best.” Also you’ve earned a sub man. While I love a bit more commentary and break down in most reactions I watch, the pure energy, emotion, and excitement you show listening to this extraordinary work brought me back to the first time I listened to this masterwork! Edit: spelling and added last paragraph.

Thank you so much for checking out the reaction and for the sub! Wow, I have a hard time trying to fathom a solo that could have matched that for sure; it's definitely evident to me after conversing with so many fans about this tune at this point that this solo is considered to be instantly legendary. But that's the mark of a genius musician lol -- it's great for everyone else, but never good enough for yourself; you're always convinced you could've and should've done better.
@AgeFuture
@AgeFuture 3 жыл бұрын
@@JonathonThamesMusic you hit the nail on the head. It’s said that a piece of art is never truly finished. You’re incredibly right in saying that it is the mark of a genius musician. Good musicians want to be legendary, great musicians strive in the end to be legendary, but truly legendary musicians strive to be better than their last performance, and the next and the next… it’s those who realize that you can always accomplish more that turn out to be the ones we remember in history. Louis Armstrong never had a moment when he said “I think I’m good enough, I can stop now.” Neither did Fats Domino, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and many other greats. That’s what we are seeing with people like Corey Henry, Jacob Collier, Larnell Lewis, and many others. They know there is and will always be more to do, more to reach forward to, more to accomplish. It’s truly inspiring.

Funny: the whole first part is in 5/8 or so, which is a fairly unusual and unstable count, but no problem "counting it", it feels "funky". It lands to the solo ostinato, which is a conventional 4/4 smart syncopated line, then it seems a whole of a hell to count it. What you feel in music is always a matter of context really. Depends on what's before. Set the perspective for what's next.
@lewiswellspiano
@lewiswellspiano 3 жыл бұрын
It's interesting. If I were writing a chart in the Nashville number system, I'd write the first part of the riff in 10 (so the players could feel it in 8 and 2), and the busy guitar/horn parts and B section (where the 4th beat is pushed) before the breakdown in 5/4. Been a minute since I've recorded one I had to consciously count.
@ginabean9434

@@mcmikah Fixed. Thanks for pointing it out, I dropped music school too soon, I guess. In theory land everything always goes well. In my world, I just need practical stuffs to survive the gig, like "first section is in 5" or "groove no2 goes on and on" = ostinato. But it's always cool to learn something new.

Thank you so much for checking out the video! As a guitarist, I'd definitely be interested in checking out some more of his work, so I've added his name to the list for reactions. Is there any particular song you'd recommend? Also, I can definitely appreciate where you're coming from with the sheet music. However, full disclosure, though I can read music, and do understand theory to an extent; I never excelled in those elements to the point that I'd be much use when it comes to discussing it with the intent of explaining what the musicians are doing from an arrangement standpoint, or expanding on why what they're doing is so amazing...at least not as of yet. One day, I may push myself to be able to do that, but we'll see where things go. I know that even as a 23 year player, I'm still learning a lot from a lot of other, more traditionally cognizant and proficient players, but traditionally I've been more of a feeling and intuition kind of player, which has worked out pretty decently overall for me when jamming with other musicians.

Hahaha, I know it's not the most "jazzy" way to respond to it lol, but I can't help it; when there is a drummer who is just tearing it up and killing it with groove, dynamics, and finesse the way that Larnell does, that is just my body's natural response lol.

I always think that the drummer (Larnell Lewis) and the percussionist (sorry forgot his name) are seriously underrated on this track. Cory Henry's solo is top notch but that rhythm section just keeps elevating the energy. For peak Larnell, try What About Me from the same album/session.

Thank you so much for checking this out! The whole band is freaking fantastic, but I'm with you; I absolutely LOVE the way that Larnell Lewis plays the drums. I know he isn't their ordinary guy, who I'm also interested in checking out at some point, but I'm absolutely BLOWN away with how well he utilizes dynamics and uses such finesse in his technique to create such deliberate nuances.

WOOHOO!!! Fun ride, ain't it? One thing you can be certain of with the Puppy. You may not fall in love with the structure, melodies and chord play of each composition they have to offer. However, you can be certain that it will be performed with impeccable musicianship, and always with a nasty, filthy, horrendous level of super tight groove:-) Suggestions? Well, you can't go in a incorrect direction. I'd say finish "We Like It Here," then move on from there. Just my two pennies. Thanks for sharing brother!!!!
