This is one of the most positive reviews I've seen for anything for a while. This is one of the most insightful reviews I've seen on anything PERIOD! You're effectively blending nuance with your own opinion. Everyone else gripes about the mustache, but you didn't even mention it! You don't waste your time on low-hanging fruit! I've seen the original. Not entirely in-line with the source material, but I enjoyed and appreciated it. I don't know what I'm more excited for now; seeing the remake for myself or seeing your next video. You were never bad at this, even when you first started (shut up if you think otherwise. you were always good) but you've come a long way in a shorter time than other people who do what you do who also came a long way!

Writers should remember there are 3 kinds of fear: Terror: you see or hear something that is very frightening and you understand what it is, like a psycho running toward you with a machete, or a shark or bear or dinosaur or alien about to attack you, or a raging forest fire about to burn you alive (sorry California!) or a tornado, etc. Horror: you see or hear something that is very frightening and you do NOT understand what it is, like a ghost or a vampire or a Cthulhu nightmare creature, or some other supernatural thing like Voodoo or witchcraft or anything beyond human knowledge. Dread: you don't really see or hear something specific, but you feel very frightened without actually sensing what or why, like you feel a "presence" or hear spooky noises or you find bloody footprints on the floor or hear a scream from upstairs, and while you cannot identify what is the source of the fear, you still fear the unknown danger. These three kinds of fear are tools writers can use to great effect. Screenwriters have a 4th tool, startlement. Jump scares. Make a loud noise or a sudden movement, or both together, even just a surprise when the musical score makes a sudden loud note (Yeah, Jaws, I'm thinking of you!). These can be incorporated into movies and television, or even radio, but not into books. Guess which one is the easiest to produce? Yeah. Number 4. So easy a toddler can do it (peekaboo!). Which ties into why modern movies have so many jumpscares and why most audiences don't like them. They feel cheap and easy and are way overused.
@simondavis75015 күн бұрын
The jumpscare has been used effectively. I hate it with all my soul because it is cheap. But in one of the original and best done, Nightmare on Elm st, they built up all 3 factors (that you discuss) and as your heart is about to explode, he jumps out. It was perfect. But these days it is just a loud noise as something jumps out without build up. The biggest issue horror suffers from, almost exclusively Western horror, is the rule of 3. You think there is something behind the shower curtain, the curtain will be pulled for a fake out twice and the 3rd the monster is there. Once you see the pattern you will see it in nearly every horror movie from America after 1980. And thats why the jumpscare fails even more, it is always on the third look and we are conditioned now to hear the audio cues and wait for that third look under the bed. Japanes horror doesn't adhere to this aspect of the jumpscare so theirs are more effective.

Best movies in my opinion (subjective) showing these points: Terror: Jaws OR Alien. A hard pick. Horror: Hereditary Dread: Insidious (the first one) Jump Scares are cheap/boring thrills so it's hard to put "good movie" with "jump scares."

Besides what you've said I also like the fact that they depicted Romania (Transilvania) and its people and Gypsy minority really, really, well, with good acting, Romanian language and all other small details that are important to make it authentic, which gave me a whole new level of "reality" and fear. The granny praying for him and the nuns and all that is really authentic and still a reality even in 2024. It also reminded me of the stories I heard as a child, about Hobgoblins and other strange nightmarish stuff. I also read an article that a Romanian, Florin Lazarescu, invented an ancient Dacian language especially for Nosferatu, I assume for making him appear really old, since Dacians ruled the land around 1st century BC - 2nd century AD.

Nosferatu is definitely my favorite movie of 2024! Interesting fact; the trope of vampires being weakened or killed by sunlight, originated from the original film Nosferatu (1922) when Count Orlok was killed by the rising of the sun. There’s nothing written in European lore or literature that vampires are weakened by the sun.

I have a ticket to see NOSFERATU on an IMAX screen at my local theater. And watching your review makes me even more psyched to see it. I am a fan of both the silent original, as well as the Werner Herzog remake (not to mention, the fictional re-imagining of the making of the silent original, SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE, which reimagines that the actor Max Shrek (whom we know very little about in in real life, and played incredibly by Willem Dafoe!) was actually a vampire in real life! A must see. With John Malkovich playing the legendary director F.W. Murnau). But never compare as for me, it’s like making a movie about a legend, like Robin Hood or King Arthur. I watch each one as their own telling of the tale.

Definitely agree. The blocking and camera moves in some scenes are just genius, especially with multiple characters and long scenes. Not quite perfect but an incredible piece of cinema for cinephiles.

The last 20 minutes were really good. I also loved the post-credit scene. Orlok is bigger and badder than ever has a fight with The Wolfman. It's gonna be called Nosfera2.

I would argue the pacing with you. It dragged a bit for me at points. This movie was perfectly cast. Visually this is an amazing movie. The tone is set with the lighting they used. I understand that was difficult to film by. The story was excellent. I loved this movie.
