Actually what happened was the shotgun fired a blank, and they setup the wall to explode. You can tell by the delay after the "shot" fires. The hole exploded outward toward him and into the crotch.

This scene is the punchline of the entire Tyrone timeline, because when the burglars finally carry out their gig, "natural fucking idiot" Tyrone saves the day! He had one job, and he fucking nailed it when everyone else fucked up. Also, his bad driving earlier had significant impact in the plotline in a similar way to Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, where (spoiler alert) everyone conveniently gets killed and all the evidence is destroyed.
