This is probably when games started looking like they could be considered as epic as movies. Hideo Kojima's effort always seems to show full force and his ambition to be a movie director really shows.
@OzzyOscy

+electricmastro Plus his desire to have ridiculously detailed world. There's a computer in the game with a giant database, you search random words and it comes up with all this in-game history and details for all these words. No wonder he wanted to have all his games take part in the same universe and timeline.

It's also worth mentioning that in the original Japanese versions, the customers inside Outer Heaven were parodies of famous characters from Sci-Fi movies, such as the Alien and C-3PO from Star Wars.

I'm finally playing this game for the first time and I'm pleasantly surprised by how good the writing is, even in 2024. this would have blown my mind if I played it as a kid. in terms of storytelling and presentation, it is way ahead of it's time. they really need to re-release this or Remake it so a new generation of gamers can play and experience this!

You know why I sub'd after the first video (Your TMNT vs. video)? You're not too loud, not swearing every other word, not depending on all kinds of background distraction, pretty much to the point, and you're very easy on the eyes. All of these things combined earned you a sub. Keep piping these videos out!

If you reviewed Snatcher, how about taking a look at Policenauts? (It would be interesting to see how Kojima would tackle a massive adventure/visual novel game these days, probably with a non-AAA studio in a crowdfunded project). Which modern cyberpunk adventures/ visual novels that strike a similar sci-fi theme can you recommend playing today? Thank you in advance.

Really enjoyed diving into this universe and finding all the Easter Eggs, but embarrassingly still haven't completed it. Surprised to hear it's only 6-7 hours, as I thought I put in way more time than that - but it was a while ago :) Great job reviewing this one, Pam. Nice to hear some honest critiques against a game that's usually painted so perfectly by the fan-base. Thanks as always for the awesome work!

My friend John had a Sega CD and this is one of those games we rented several times to beat. The atmosphere of the Snatcher was and still is top notch. But I got to give you mad props for having the super swank opening theme song play for a bit around the 1:30 mark. I had my friend record it on tape for me back in the day along with the opening theme song for Rise of the Dragon, which is another great cyberpunk detective game very similar to Snatcher. If you have not, I recommend reviewing Rise of the Dragon as well. A small comparison of the two would be great as well.

Was that Kojima who updated the dialogue with the references to the senate hearings on video game violence, or was it the localization team? The said senate hearings took place in 1993, while the original version of this game was released in 1988.

So basically this was the Blade Runner video game we never got. Or maybe this was what the Terminator video game should've been. Man, I'm so mad at myself for selling off my Justifier light guns back in the day, but desperate people do desperate things when the rent is due and the bank account is empty. Little did I know could have quadrupled my investment--or at least played snatcher and a few other games as they were intended--if I had just held onto those funny pieces of plastic just a few years longer.

The 3x3 grid shooting parts are straight out of the Sunset Riders bonus game. It's also from Konami. Released in 1991. Ever played it? You should, it's really fun and fast. If you use MAME, put a few bucks of virtual quarters in while you learn it.

I'd say the Sunset Riders bonus game is straight out of Snatcher, since it originally released in 1988. I have played Sunset Riders (and reviewed it), but am more familiar with the Genesis version, which doesn't have that bonus game, than SNES or arcade.

Cannot be Tamed I played it on an emulator myself, but if you're not a fan of emulation, there are ways to play it on a PSP or on a PS1 and PS2. I don't know how it's like playing it that way, but a person once told me he preferred emulation since it's a bitch to get a PS1 or PS2 to play copied games. Also, he said there were some glitches present on the console, and when I played on emulation, I don't remember any serious glitches. Also, I was planning on doing a review and unboxing video of the PS1 version, so if you're interested, I'll let you know when it's up. It'll be spoiler free, just in case you're worried about spoilers.

3 years old. I've still not got round to playing this. I hope to play this and an English dub version of Policenauts. I figure I will have to try and convince someone else to do this for it to happen (Nes Manga).

Snatcher is my all time favorite game next to The Last of Us. I've been wanting a sequel now for the past 22 years!

Have you checked out SDatcher by SUDA51?? It's a prequel that's a radio drama, and it's pretty damn good. The english translation is on KZbin.

I saw someone already suggested Rise of the Dragon. Try to find The Space Adventure on Sega CD as well. It's similar to Snatcher, Policenauts and Rise of the Dragon.

That one's gotten so expensive. I used to have it :(

Cannot be Tamed I remember getting Snatcher, Rise of the Dragon and Space Adventure all for under $20 brand new in 1995. Then in 2002 I was in the Army and stationed in Hawaii. There was a pawn shop full of old games and systems. They had two new copies of Snatcher for only $8. I bought one. I sold it in 2008 to go towards a PS3 though :3

I got up and took a piss during the middle of Madnar's speech at the end. I don't believe there is a save point between that and the Robo-spider debacle (I also used a gamepad), so it's safe to say I won't be hearing his full lecture any time soon.

+Cannot be Tamed Thanks! Doesn't look like I missed much, though. Definitely a low point in an otherwise great game.

Great vid, and I'm a HUGE Kojima fan. The price tag is pretty nuts though, can you emulate it?

+mahnkiman2 Thanks! I think you can emulate on PC, or play it on your modded XBox.

Great review and I have personally played through this game about three times and love it, even have the soundtrack on vinyl. Very much agree with all your negatives regarding the game as well. Not worth the price at all but grab yourself a raspberry pi, hook it up to a crt and play the game as close to the real thing like I did 👍 here is hoping that one day we will get a sequal or at least a version on the switch eshop.

It really should get a digital release somewhere.
