I personally like several things about the vinyl experience. The first is the fact that, when you go to all the trouble to clean them, tweak the playback hardware, and go through the ritual of cuing up the record, etc., you feel like you're really **earned** the listening experience. Then there's the media itself. The sense of ownership of the music in your hand is irreplaceable, unlike any other media. In fact, if you look closely, you can actually see the very waves of sound imprinted in the grooves. Kind of mind blowing.

I grew up in an era when records were important and even a social activity. You might call a friend and ask "what you doin?". "Listening to records, wanna come over?" "Sure!". And from that point it was the process of discussing who was the better artist, which song to play next, you handled records and shared the work with your friend and you could make an afternoon of it. It wasn't an ambient, background streaming thing that you read would acclimate to in 10 minutes. It was a part of a social life. I recently rediscovered this when my friend bought an old Victrola. @shableep4 жыл бұрын
Weirdly enough, I kind of like the soft pops and clicks. It's audible reminder of the physicality of the record. There's something comfortingly organic and grounding about the crackling sound. Digital sound is, on the other hand, perfectly sterile and ageless. The imperfections on a record give the sound a completely new character and tell a story about where the record has been. There's a sense of permanence to the vinyl record. It doesn't depend on a server farm and an internet connection to produce its sound. The sound is actually physically molded on a surface and present in the room, and mostly keeps its shape its entire life, for generations. While codecs and compression algorithms come and go over decades, the record stays the same. And as it sits on a shelf, time slowly etches itself into the grooves for the listener to hear the next time they put it on the turn table.
@IncrediPaulAZ2 жыл бұрын

Spending 5 minutes to shoot it with an anti-static gun and carefully putting a picoliter of cleaning fluid on the cleaning arm, checking all the counter-balancing pickup arm weights for perfection (not too much weight pressing down on the grooves but not too light either or the pickup arm will skate across the disk further scratching it) and finally sealing the doors on your dust proof positive air pressure listening room.

_"People who own record collections are idiots..."_ I was there when the CD was introduced. At the time vinyl and compact cassette were the dominant formats. Every home had at least one turntable. When people heard the CD, it was like a miracle. Near zero noise, incredible dynamic range, beyond human hearing frequency response. It only took a few years for most record stores to ditch vinyl completely and enjoy year over year sales increases for 12 straight years. I remember seeing crates a plenty of vinyl at every thrift store I walked into, they were almost giving it away. Now, vinyl is a life style, fashion accessory. A CD player from a thrift store still sounds better. The good news, is that used CDs are almost free. If we could only stop the loudness wars that have ruined almost all music released in the last decade.
@JulianchoMaiden4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. In my country all record plants machines were sold and stopped making records in the middle of the 90s because of the CD format and all its advantages. Unfortunately, the loudness wars have ruined the format, so I had to start buying records just because of the dynamic range. I hope one day there will be a law for record companies and studios to respect the dynamic range in music and of course, our ears. A CD with full dynamic range sounds a lot better than a record made nowadays.

I purchased an Ultrasonic cleaner setup for $300 on Amazon and it cleans 7 LPs at a time. I use distilled water and some rubbing alcohol. I have also added BCR cleaning solution that is used for cleaning jewelry in ultrasonic cavitation devices. I have used the the Vinyl Style Groove thing and its better than nothing, but still event after a good cleaning you can still see that records are dirty in the grooves and looking in the light can still have a brownish tint from years of dirt. One run through the Ultrasonic cleaner and the LPs look brands new. It gets them as clean as they will ever get. It does not work miracles but gets close to it. I have had dollar bin LPs from thrift stores that were filthy. Cleaned them and they looked and played like new. Best investment I ever made for LPs. Only draw backs are the machines can be noisy and if you air dry (best way) it can take 1 or 2 hours before dry enough to stick in sleeves.

1:40 digital has the potential to have a much greater dynamic range than vinyl can, but due to the loudness war digital files often have a much lower dynamic range than they should.
@pikkon8993 жыл бұрын
The loudness war is the result of engineers and mastering. The format has nothing to do with that. Loud music exists because engineers master music loudly. Not every digital track is loud. If people actually purchased first pressings of music recorded in the 80's on CD, they'll know that the music is much quieter and softer than the stuff that came out in the late 90's or the remastered counterparts done in the 2000's. Analog deteriorates over time, digital does not. CD's made in the 80's are the best examples of how well digital sounds over the vinyl counterpart. Those CD's don't even come close to being as loud as today's recordings.

I just viewed this video and have some comments of my own. I am in my late 60's and started collecting vinyl in the early 60's. I used to clean my albums with my own solution made of dish detergent, distilled water and Jet Dri. I scrubbed the albums with a brush going clockwise and rinsed with distilled water. My daughter bought me a Spin Clean record cleaner a few years ago from a store that sold damaged goods. The cleaner usually cost around $175.00 but had a very slight crack in a place that wasn't important and she paid $5.00. This system far surpasses the cheap cleaner you show and I have had first class results with the Spin Clean system. I reject your notion that the brushes on either of the two systems that use them caused the scratches. The treatment you gave the albums with the potato chips and especially the trash out of the vacuum cleaner would be my first suspect. There was no telling what had been picked up in that vacuum debris. All I learned was that you are a wealthy, preppy boy who throws money away on the most expensive (which is not always the best) and have missed the whole point in collecting vinyl.

Don't get me wrong CD quality digital files are no doubt going to be more DETAILED than a clean record played on a quality system, but the real life sound of records cannot be matched. It's flaw creates a distortion that makes everything sound real, and in the process of that distortion you lose a *little* bit of detail. I'm talking the tiniest bit of detail. You also gain that warmth you get from vinyl's flaw and some hate it some love it. I personally love it. If you don't, no shame in that.

I purchased the vinyl style told don’t use the cleaner that comes with it because it will leave a residual that’s unable to be removed. Use spin clean fluid instead. No matter how much I try to tighten the label protector I still get a bead of water near the label that can seep into the label edge and damage it. Solution is to dry around the label edge when it comes out of the washer. Anyway still have severe popping and crackle so annoying and disappointing. Your right it’s just too much work for nothing. Don’t get me wrong it definitely has made improvements with other records. I really feel automatic ultrasonic is the way to go money well spent. Great video Thanks!

I can tell you one love, even if subconsciously, many have with vinyl. The waveform we hear in our ears is ACTUALLY represented physically right there on the surface. It is the ONLY medium humans have to playback recorded audio without electricity if needed. That is how it all started. If everything hits the fan, we still have these to jam to, which is one of the reasons I built my own record recorder (lathe), and yes it does record in true stereo (left & right) @ 90* to each channel and 45* to the plane. Love your video and your love of analog.

When i was deep into the vinyl hobby. I was looking at expensive record cleaners. Then I realised,what am I doing. Obviously I was more obsessed about equipment rather than the music. At the moment I have a Ifi Zen dac , Focal active speakers and a computer playing Tidal. The best part is that I don't need to clean my digital files. LOL. Good luck to all those vinyl heads maintaining their collections

Having 40 years of high end audiophile experience, I love this guy's enthusiasm and the nice comparison he gives. But his conclusions should not be taken as fact based on just this one series of tests. It's best to survey the views of many sources and then let your own experience be the deciding factor. In this review, the vacuum system was not given a really fair chance. Many of us still regard it as the best system if it is used correctly. The ticks heard on the vacuum cleaned disc may be the result of static, not scratches from the brush. When using a vacuum, it's easy to generate static. More than one rotation in a dry room can cause it to form on a disc. The jury is still out on the ultrasonic systems and the potential damage that they can cause. A lot of folks now believe that a combination of a shorter ultrasonic cleaning followed up by high quality vacuum gives the best results.
@haroldm46003 жыл бұрын
Agreed. There are varying techniques and types of cleaning solutions used with vacuum based record cleaning systems that result in a wide range of effectiveness. I would not have expected good results from the technique and solution shown in this video. I use an Okki Nokki machine with L’Art du Son cleaning fluid, applied liberally to the entire record surface with a goat hair brush and allowed to remain on the surface for 1-2 minutes before vacuuming - for not more than 2 rotations. This has produced excellent results.
@fredzep013 жыл бұрын
that machine was garbage, and the cleaning fluid was leaving a streaky mist on the vinyl. i use a project vc-s which i paid £130 for, and L’Art du Son for cleaning fluid it is painless and perfect to use.

How to remove static? I live in a very dry area and records build up immense static just by playing on the TT. Definitely producing pops and crackles.

Or bulk buy wood glue.pour it on, let it set, peel it off and you're clean. $50 of that stuff it you bulk buy will clean most normal sized collections and you can do a dozen sides at a time if you lay them on a surface covered in something nonstick like metal, glass, plastic wrap

Good stuff! Thanks for the video. I recently got into vinyl, and have been perusing the $1 bins too. Cleaning definitely helps a lot. The "Spin Clean" which is indeed near the same price point as the Vinyl Style has very different brushes than VS, so it might be worth testing too. They're more like fake velvet scrubby pads than brushes... I should think that this might work better, or at least differently. It's also made in the USA, by a family-owned business, which is nice these days. P.S. I'm also an LX-mini household, so fun to see that in your shot. FWIW, I had GREAT results with USB isolator (from HiFimeDIY) while hooking the miniDSP up to my raspberry pi. Might be a video in there somewhere for you ;-)

Before I come up with an actually useful and in-depth response, let me just say that at 7:20 You're using two supports that are not supposed to support the same record, there's a reason they are offset :) So, responses. First of all; Keith Monks Gemini. It uses an arm that sucks up the dirt through a piece of string, it's amazing and works just as well as an ultrasonic cleaner. You can pick them up for around 1000 euros second hand and they are definitely the way to go. Thank me later. Then, another option of cleaning records that are just 'a bit' dirty is just using a spray bottle with water and a drop of washing up liquid, don't use too much because calcium and such. Spread it with a microfiber cloth, dry with a clean kitchen towel, always making sure you follow the grooves. Works as well as a spin clean. Don't use it on super dirty records but if you already have a clean collection and you find that some records have gotten a bit noisy 'lately', this is actually a useful method. I am right now digitizing all of my records in a very high resolution and found this method often gives great results and doesn't cost a thing. If you have a spin clean, you can make the fluid yourself. Half a liter denaturalized alcohol, half a liter of demineralized water, drop of washing up liquid, drop of wetting agent (or rinse aid). Does the job just fine. And then there's the brushes thing. If you want to use a fully manual vacuum machine like, for instance, an Okki Nokki, consider spending a little extra on the brush. The flat thing that comes with it, doesn't work. I use a Levindesign brush, highly recommended. And last but not least; L'Art Du Son is a great cleaning fluid for vacuum RCM's. Beats the competition every time. Also don't forget to clean your stylus. Nagaoka 801 is your friend. As for the listening; The Degritter is still the best option. I wonder what went wrong with the Music Hall though, sounds very harsh all of a sudden. Misprinted record? Something went wrong during digitizing or did the dirt/cleaning process actually add something to the shape of the grooves to cause that? Weird.

“Good dynamic range”? It’s not how I remember the “good old days” in the recording studio, where we always struggled with the very limited dynamic range, with should target. So no, digital audio is far superior in this field.
@eug3nius4 жыл бұрын
Digital has better dynamic range capability but modern music has almost no dynamic range by choice. Duckduckgo "loudness war".
@UtkarshAmitabhSrivastava4 жыл бұрын
@@eug3nius I hate this loudness war thing. Just give me my dynamic range.
@smartroadbiker4 жыл бұрын
If only record labels would actually use the dynamic range. When I am round friends and they have modern pop music on the one thing I notice is that when the song finishes it is like there is pressure off of my ears, it's as if they can finally relax. Mostly why I have stopped listening to modern(ish) pop music and stick with my movie and game soundtracks (on vinyl of course hehe)
@eug3nius4 жыл бұрын
Utkarsh Amitabh Srivastava The fact remains that vinyl had its resurgence because it is the only physical format worth owning. And not just because some vinyl masters are better.
@NicolaiSyvertsen4 жыл бұрын
Good Dynamic range also requires engaging music to make use of it. That is why a lot of modern music compress the dynamic range as much as possible to fake the engagement. Making things more loud = more engaging. And it is not just about loudness but what style of music you have. Music with lots of heavy beats throughout the entire song and there is little room for other stuff. Classical pieces and Jazz often have quiet sections and longer builds ups. This is where having wide dynamic range is good. For Dance music? Not so much.

If you wanna see how "gentle" cavitation is, chuck a piece of tinfoil in an ultrasonic cleaner and you might rethink putting your vinyl in it ever again. It's the principle by which depth charges work, the reason submarines have to be slow as hell to be stealthy and the reason early steam ship propellers got ripped apart by their own speed. It's loud, it's violent and it's potentially devastating.
@dougsteel74143 жыл бұрын
Vinyl actually has much lower dynamic range than hi res digital audio. It's partly necessitated by the mechanics, it's heavily compressed (also historically for radio), old stuff uses nice valve compressors which gives a good flavour
@dennisgreen18374 жыл бұрын
Vinyl has LESS dynamic range when recorded from the same master. We checked with Telarc to be sure the vinyl and Cd were recorded without any processing other than RIAA EQ, and the vinyl compressed the louder passages by a little less than 2 dB. This likely is due to the plastic deformation of vinyl with the increasing force of the stylus at higher modulation. Most vinyl sounds better due to production choices, not the medium. Audio is dominated by mythology, snake oil and placebos, but according to golden ear listeners, any test that doesn't confirm their beliefs is by definition defective.

@ChineseBanaan4 жыл бұрын
Thats a standard industry format power supply, this one is probably high quality. There is no logic in calling it 'AliExpress power supplies', you would have to say that for every normal commodity item sold on that site. They are popular because enclosed power supplies (in the same format as a laptop charger) are more expensive to make. The open ones also have better thermal performance obviously. Take some time to google next time please.
