Rebel Friend is necessary because if you give the player the standard Rebel Guard, you force an awkward situation where it is difficult to tell which characters are NPCs and which characters are playable. His shirt is red to help differentiate him so that this situation doesn't arise.

I hope this is sarcasm , right? You can’t actually like the gonk droid more than the ghosts. The gonk droid legit costs about 2,000 studs because it’s absolute trash. You can earn the money to buy the gonk droid just be smashing things in the cantina! The ghosts are literally invisible to enemies. You really can’t get much better than that, especially with a tiny little droid that goes as slow as molasses and can’t even attack.

Fun fact about Lego Yoda! while still being grabbed by force lightning, he doesn't lose any hearts from a lightning attack! (Even fully charged!) This mimicks the way he blocks the emperor's lightning in III and really shows the amount of detail hidden in these (nowadays) simple characters. I'm surprised you didn't get into the little quirks about the character factions, like how the 3PO droids walk slower and slower with each hit of damage that they take (and it reflects on their model too!) and that the battle droids can shoot things along with the enemy battle droids in the levels.
