Hello, and welcome back to another video. This week I will be taking a look at the SNCF TGV service from Milano (in Italy) to Paris (the Capital of France).
In this week's train trip report, I travel in First Class on this beautiful route, which runs from Milano and Torino in Italy, through the Alps to Bardonecchia, then crossed the border into France at Modane. After a little more travelling, the train reaches Chambéry, and then moves towards Lyon, where it joins the high-speed line, travelling at 300km/h (186mph) towards the French capital of Paris.
On-board there is also a good catering offer, available from the on-board bar, including both hot and cold drinks and meals. This was a beautiful and scenic trip, which I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone who wishes to travel between the locations served. It's so much nicer than any dull and soulless flight - even if a lot slower.
I hope you enjoy this video of an amazing train journey, and be sure to subscribe for similar weekly videos.

Excellent video. My wife and I use this service three or four times a year - or at least we did until the arrival of Covid - en route to and from our second home in Italy. We never tire of the journey and manage to spot something new every time. Since the opening of the Torino - Milano high-speed line in 2006, we normally change trains at Torino Porta Susa, which gives a faster connection for Florence - either by Trenitalia Frecciarossa or NTV Italo high-speed trains. The only thing that we don't like about the Christian Lacroix first class interiors - and it's a problem common to all TGV and Eurostar class 373 sets - is the fact that the fluorescent strip lighting is positioned immediately above the windows, which gives an annoying reflection when you're trying to photgraph or video the scenery through the window. Occasionally, when we have had to travel at very short notice and there were no first class seats available, we have had to endure the truly awful Lacroix second class seats, which are much harder, very narrow and have a ridiculously-designed protruding metal reclining handle underneath the front of the seat - which bruises the back of your legs every time you get in or out of the seat. The small galley area at the end of car 2 was formerly used for meal preperation in the days when all first class passengers were served an at-seat meal. It's a shame that you changed seats to the right hand side after leaving Torino, as you missed the spectacular mountain-top medieval fortifed abbey - the Sacra di San Michele - the inspiration for Umberto Eco's novel "The Name of the Rose". The TGVs are not scheduled to stop at Bussoleno; it must have been a signal stop. All-in-all, an excellent travelogue on a beautiful route! I look forward to seeing Dylan's take on it!

A great travel report. That journey is by far the best I have travelled on a TGV. I did Paris to Milan return in 2017 by TGV in second class having a window seat to myself in both directions. The alpine scenery is beautiful both sides of the border. I paid €29 each way which was a bargain.

I just love the TGV. It is the definitive european high speed train. Our german ICE service can be great when it arrives on time BUT too often it just doesn‘t. I did Marseille- Paris once and it was an absolute blast and about as relaxed as it gets. All the other services still have some catching up to do

So my impressions ... (1) great presentation, thank you! (2) nice big brown spot on seat cushion. (3) couldn’t get over how quiet the train was (4) yes, yes I understand COVID-19 has finished a number of services, but really one attendant serving from a trolley couldn’t be that bad ... put the meals on a tray and slide it in front of the passenger. Even could cater a simple attractive cold meal tray. Swiss (air) does a nice catering in Business Class so it could be on that order. (4). Prefer scenic routes now as I’ve finally reached retirement and left the hurry hurry pace of life ... and enjoying life more 👍🏻. (5) subbed you as I thought your presentation was bang on spot 👍🏻

Not blood and iron, Otto? ;-) Seriously, though - the food prices are hilarious and ridiculous if you compare them to the ticket price. I can't afford to travel at all these days (I just ride a bike), but I suppose regular travellers get used to it. I'd most definitely have packed myself a homemade lunch, though - egg sandwiches, crisps, banana, bar of chocolate, flask of tea. (£1.48 total. Result!)

Yes, I totally agree. I'm not keen on the duplexes, especially downstairs, as they feel rather claustrophobic. Upstairs is OK, but the TGV single deck trains are my preference. Strangely, I find the Swiss double-deck trains OK, maybe just the way they're fitted out.

At the beginning, there was (at the TGV-réseau trains like this one) a luggage compartment and a tiny first class group compartment at this section. Both were unused or horrible, when you paid a firs class ticket and only got one of those horribly cramped seats. It was a good solution, to create this 2nd class compartment instead, means more seats instead of useless space.

We did that journey in the other direction in 2014. An enjoyable journey which did get a bit tedious towards the end. We left Paris on a train advertised as direct to Milan but we had to unexpectedly change trains at Chambery which caused considerable confusion - no announcement on the train (my other half speaks French fluently so would have heard and understood) and it was only a passenger who boarded at Chambery who told us the train was returning to Paris that avoided us heading back to the French capital. Many of us in 1st class had ordered and consumed their meals but were still to pay when we had to disembark there, causing the poor steward a nervous breakdown trying to collect the monies due. It was total chaos!

I stumbled on your excellent channel this morning and have been working my way through your videos. They are really well put together. But now the dumb bit....! That class 66 at Modane, would that have travelled through Dollands Moor freight facility, close to the Eurotunnel terminal, here in Folkestone? I see them there sometimes, but it never occurred to me that they would perhaps venture such long distances. A bit daft I know, but I just never thought about it. Another great video thanks. I have made this trip a few times (pre-covid) in 1st class and been so impressed with it all. A comfortable, fast smooth train, nice helpful staff and good catering plus bonus of fantastic views. I did not want to get off but had to continue on the Eurostar train to London which was also a nice experience. However, to end my trip I had to endure a long horrific uncomfortable ride in a Japanese IET train on GWR from Paddington to my final destination. I believe you too are not impressed with these things. If only the UK government chose a European train like the TGV then it would have been a totally perfect adventure. p.s. (old TGV Nose is best)

Amazing video and well done for 3K subs the train is old but the interior looks great both in second and first class the scenery around the alps on both sides of the border ❤️ so I guess thello want to compete with TGV in the daytime now I guess you would probably trip report that when that service eventually happens When you say there was border patrol at the French border despite both France and Italy being EU and schengen is it normal procedure or is it because of migrant situation in Europe?
@federicobaldassarri9151
@federicobaldassarri9151 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s for migrant situation. They don’t check the passports, police only walks along the train to see there’s somebody suspicious. However if you cross the border by car, nobody will check you and there’s no police (except in the motorway borders, but I crossed Frejus border a couple of week ago in both directions and nobody stopped me, although the police was there). So I think the police, which is present only in the major border crossings, checks only buses and trains and sometimes lorries.

I want to keep both the scenic and HS routes! We can afford both, the legacy tracks can also be good freight arteries. When I'm in a hurry, HS is way to go, but Milano-Paris is a long way for HS. I once did London-Bologna via Frankfurt and Munich. Fun, but a day-long trip. I've always loved TGV's, but the Italian and German HS sets are nice, too. Haven't tried the ones in Spain yet. On the London-Bologna trip, the Eurostar was getting a bit worn inside, but they've been facelifted since. Thalys was also a little the worse for wear, the new ICE3's on the relatively new Schnellfahrstrecke Köln-Rhein/Main were superb.

the legacy route will continue to exist, mainly for local trains. Freight will mostly use the new "high speed" route, which will actually be a "fast" 220kph. It's 220kph lien and not a true 300+ high speed line because : 1- to complicated/expensive trough the Alps 2- mainly design for freight 3- and Lyon-Turin local train with a 200kph top speed (2 hours of travel time) With TGV running at 220kph it will connect Lyon and Turin in 1H45. By going around Lyon and using both the french "Sud Est" 300kph and Italian "Turin Milan" 300kph line (up to 400kph in the futur), journey time will be reduce to 4 hours.

Nice video! This has to be cheaper than some of the airlines from Milan to Paris (Although RyanAir sells tickets at least 75% cheaper than the amount you had to pay for your ticket). It's definitely better than just flying in the air and stare at clouds. The exciting bit is normally during take off and landing. I definitely prefer the older trains although the new trains might offer a good amount of comfort so you could try them out.

Not to mention that the advantage of taking trains Is that they leave you right in the city center instead of an airport 10 km away. Also you don't waste hours before boarding with safery controls, luggage check-in and no boarding queue, you just straight get on the train and take your seat. At the end a flight within two european countries takes the same as a train route if we consider all the pre-flight procedures, the time you spend at the baggage claim and the transfer from the airport to your accommodation. Definitely railways are more convenient when travelling within the continent.

I used a sevice Milan - Chambery some years ago, there was a problem with the onboard toilets, didn't need to looks for signs to find them, they stunk awfuly, the small indicated their presence. Shocking. Also, in Milan there was a big step down from the train to the platform, my wife almost fell when alighting! I note the train was using the left track most of the way.

The reason for the tiny second class section : TGV are articulated trainset. It means that the truck is in between cars. But it as power cars and those are not articulated, so the first and last car are longer with a truck directly below each extremity. On the first TGV, the Sud-Est, those trucks were powered and the tiny section you saw was an engine room. But with the second generation of TGV, the Atlantique, power was increased and the power cars were now sufficient (8.8MW total vs 6.5MW for the Sud-Est). So what used to be an engine room is now a passenger compartment, situated directly over the truck. Also, in front of it there is a cargo hold. Rarely used.

I hope that the TAV will be complete soon, so the route Torino-Lione will be at High speed as well. And it's a shame that Trenitalia doesn't allow TGV train on the high speed route Torino-Milano... weel of course TGV could be see as a competitor of FrecciaRossa, and they already allow Italo, that is a private operator... but after all Trenitalia can make TGV pay for the concession of the line. And yes Italian two pin socket are cross-compatible with french one (if I'm not wrong, is also the one used in Germany) and many device in Italy are sold with that type of socket, like my PC power supplies. A schuko----> 3 pin Italian socket adpater is an object present in every Italian house

Soon, with the possibility for french train to run on italian high speed track, and italian trains to run on french high speed track, the journey will be much more appealing. And once the faster (220kph) and more direct line between France and Italy will be open, then it will be truly competitive with planes. If they also increase the speed of the line between Turin and Milan, which is design for 400kph, but 350 kph is more realistic and is possible with both the ETR1000 and TGV Dasye/Euroduplex/Horizon, then the total journey time will be under 4 hours :)
