Just so y'all know, I only had the back-up to the back-up camera with me and one audio (and no cameraperson), so this is not the regular quality you and I are both accustomed to on this channel, but DEFINITELY wanted to take the opportunity to give you a sneak peek of 'Planted by Christy' before it opens to the public on Saturday, March 27, 2021. We'll have to do a proper tour sometime in the near future. Hope you enjoy either way. :)

Judging by a dozen of marantaceae that I've got, I can say that the ones that threw a drama fit once I brought them home and would stay in a miserable state for months with no growth at all were those that were sitting in very good conditions in greenhouses as opposed to an average plant shop. At times I bought a couple from a vendor in the street market and they kept thriving in my home uninterrupted. I don't own a humidifier and my heating completely dries up the air when it's on and an adansonii still grows comfortably two leaves per month during the winter. So I'd make the guess that except for some especially hard to grow plants that really need a special environment to thrive, all 99% humidity is going to achieve is make plants sellable quicker and then make it harder to acclimatize them into the customers' homes where they will eventually be.

As a long time plant-person these shops are wonderful something different but my only concern is the crazy prices on these plants. About four years ago NSE tropical was easy to buy from ...now everything is on auction making to hard to get plants with somewhat normal prices. Awwww the good old days ☺️

Cute little plant shop. Most of those are pretty common here in FL. I never thought the Variegated Monstera deliciosas would go for such crazy prices when I bought 3 plants for less than $20ea 12 yrs ago at a local nursery. @@amandalandaverde2622 You'll probably be waiting for a long time, as the interest in rare plants have grown exponentially in the last few years, and will continue to grow in the coming years. Hence why we're starting to see so many 'rare plant shops' opening online and now also with physical stores. It might even be a good idea to buy your favourite plant right now as it will probably just become more expensive, seeing as the pandemic has made plants even more popular, while also increasing prices because of shipment rates and less plants being grown because of lockdowns.

I am hoping their plants got better. I really want them to succeed because the plants would be more common to trade. Ive purchased a few "rare" plants from them and they all needed a lot of rehab. some died and they replaced them, but still took a while to grow normally . They are known for selling plants without roots for $$$$. plant prices are so high right now and they are capitalizing on it. They are trying to sell them ASAP without letting them to root enough. For the price it's not too much to ask for, if not I would rather order from Asia or South America. I wouldn't buy from them again unless I am willing to take up a rehab plant project or I just can't find the plant anywhere else. I will give them another chance once I see that they have increased their care for imports and see that their greenhouse room is not just a PR stunt. Im sure they will get there eventually, it does seem they want to send out quality plants . Only time will tell.

@ItIsWhatItIs ! Don't let what I said stop you from going. If you want to buy anything just inspect it well! If it looks sad check the roots and contact the shop.

I've had some issues with plants from Nelly's for sure. One they sold me over the phone and when I went to pick it up a few days later it looked like it was about to die, sure enough it had no roots. But they are very nice and they will replace the plant if they have them still. The soil always needs to be replaced too, fungus gnats everywhere. But its the only place to get less common plants locally for a decent price 🤷🏻‍♀️

Curious to hear how the plants are sourced. Are they being cultivated in their countries of origin or just dug out of the landscape? It would be good to know how sustainable/ethical these kinds of productions are at their source. I know propagation takes a while, but doesn't it make more sense than having to constantly acclimate everything all the time?

Most all non fair trade product have ethical issues somewhere in their supply chain. Personally I buy used or try to make things myself to avoid supporting a bad supply chain. It would be amazing if someone somewhere could tell us plant people how the greenhouses treat their employees, where they even are, where the *seeds* come from and if gathering those seeds is done ethically.. A video on this only would be amazing. What do we know and not know????

Idk I hate to say it but I’ve been disappointed in the lack of knowledge by some local plant shops in my community so I feel like it’s not a rare thing to see a lot of price gouging with these “rarer” plants. I believe he said that he is trying to give the plants the same environment as where they came from to acclimatize them, get the roots to develop “ “Get them ready to sell”. It is not his 1st rodeo so let’s hope that he knows what he is doing for the sake of the plants and his pockets because. These are a GORGEOUS bunch😍 Otherwise without any transition, it will be harder for plants kept in that condition to acclimate to a regular home environment.
@sunshinesmile94
@sunshinesmile94 3 жыл бұрын
He sort of glossed over her repeated questions to clarify the acclimatisation process. Sure, it's nice that you are "replicating" the "environment where they came from" by cranking up the humidity to 99% and causing them to push out new leaves and look good quickly. However without a proper acclimatisation process to get the plants stable in conditions that you are more likely to encounter in the average home, chances are these plants will be purchased only for the buyer to be disappointed at how they fare two weeks or so down the line...

This is amazing since so many of these plants have not been available in NYC before, but I'm a bit concerned that they don't understand the concept of "acclimating." Recreating the home environment is great for recovery after shipping, but it is not acclimating the plants to the apartments of people in the city. A huge number of these aroids are probably going to die shortly after purchase if they are going straight from 95% humidity to a home without a greenhouse/terrarium.

My thoughts exactly as i was confused when he said acclimatise to 95% humidity which is basically creating the same environment in Indonesia and Thailand. Acclimatise should be gradually making the plant getting to used to NYC weather slowly. I think those plant will die for sure unless they did something else we arent aware of. And ppl mention no ventilation at this place which i agreed as it will cause fungus.

Don’t mean to disrespect the people that made this shop, but 100% humidity is not healthy and definitely not suited for a large part of the plants showed in the video. It’s just a matter of time before they get lots of problems with rot :/

video quality was great. It's hard to see through the mist, lol, no matter what. I am sure the quality of plant and care they are getting once out of the box and into the high humidity accounts for the hefty price tags. Thanks, Summer. And did you say your middle name is Hyacinth?

Stunningly beautiful shop and plant specimens, but $5,000 for a 'Monstera Adansonii Mint Variegated'...wow! ~ maybe a little like Tulipomania in the 17th century!

The plants stayed at 99% humidity at the shop. Consider how much the humidity at your house is. Rare plants have a hard time acclimatize... This is not a statement of to buy or not to buy, but to prepare your house environment for the plant to acclimatize. At the end of the day you pay an arm and a leg for it.

I didn't have a lot of time to look through every plant, but I didn't catch any carnies (but that's not to say they are NOT there). But if they are not, and you ask, they will bring in.

@@mavel2038 Thanks for the heads up. I already had some concerns based on their lack of understanding of acclimatization and what will assuredly be a mold/fungus filled greenhouse but I definitely won't be supporting them if this is the case.
