I'm a 58-year-old woman who somehow wound up going down a rabbit hole of sneakers over the last 2 months. What has been hard for me to understand is why so many young and old pay so much for a sneaker that's mass produced and is intended to be sold for $100 sometimes less sometimes a little more. I understand collecting many things as a hobby as well as collecting sneakers but I just thought it was/is to pay ridiculous over retail prices for once cut open (insert Rose Anvil) was just a bunch of cheap fabric and foam put together in a pretty package. To some degree I put this on the manufacturers that need this type of hype to create scarceness and the FOMO. I'm not into basketball shoes but they were just a few Converse, or New Balance, or vans that I liked and clicked on only to find out they were three $400 when the retail price was $80. Nope. It's nonsensical.

It’s more of the economy shifting than hype dying. But I guess both go hand in hand. People can’t afford many things not just shoes. Gas, food, rent. No stimulus going around, no incentive to be unemployed. (The extra money EDD was giving out to people on unemployment). Minimum wage went up and so did the cost of everything else. People can’t afford to buy shoes so freely right now. And yes it’s a good time for a genuine sneaker lover like myself to buy shoes we want but like my dad told me, money you have left over today is money you will need tomorrow. I’m currently focusing on saving my money. Although I can afford to buy many of the shoes I want, I choose to be frugal. Unless it’s an OG shoe I really want, it can wait.

The first wave came when the breds came out 2012, then it progressed to the original 350 boosts. but now that all of the clout and money money is gone it’s time for the people who’ve been doing it since the early 2000s to get back to it.
