I've been a sneaker collector since 2002 and after the birth of my first child, I've came to the conclusion that life is meant to be lived and not spent. I'm getting so much more from my family than any sneaker release I've ever been apart of. I still like shoes but I live more for the experiences that life rewards. Shout out to you and your growth. It's good to see more people taking time for themselves rather than impressing others. Keep going and growing. Lâche pas mò frè.

just had this conversation the other day. it's very true that our egos can honestly get in the way trying to keep up with the people we see on social media or that instant gratification that comes from purchasing something new and after you see it and wear it once, you're looking for what's next. we have to be more content and show gratitude to what we have in front of us and not what we see from other's highlight reel. great video bro!

I’ve been watching your channel off and on since I was 13. I’m 21 now and it’s crazy that you said “I wish I knew when I was 21.” That hit me hard. I think as sneakerheads we lie to ourselves and say “once I have these sneakers I’m done” but then we still need more. Not to brag but I have accumulated around a $20k collection and I still say that to myself. I would love to hear you keep talking about this topic because I don’t think it’s discussed enough. We have enslaved ourselves to consumerism. Always needing the best and biggest thing has such a strangle on our lives. Blessings brother❤️🤙🏽

I’m 36 and I realized that I don’t need to buy everything that I want. I think carefully, ponder for a little while, calculate if I decide to go through with it, and make sure I enjoy whatever I bought for a good while before I buy a similar item. I learn to enjoy what I have for a longer time instead of finding good deals or whatever is hot. Video Game, Shoes, electronics, clothes, household items, etc. all have to get vetted by me before I purchase it. Also, the lasting effect of enjoying the simple things in life like practicing a hobby, enjoying going out, exercising, good rest, good movies/shows, music, cleaning, decorating your place, etc. are really rewarding as well.

I've also been falling off on sneakers. Everyone is just releasing so many shoes and so many colorways. It's hard to keep on top of things, hard to pick and choose what you wanna prioritize when it comes to sneakers, and most importantly, everything is so over saturated. Everyone and their momma wears the same thing. There's not a spark anymore, a thing that makes you wanna tap into the sneaker game. Part of it is obviously that we've grown up and started liking other things or prioritizing spending money somewhere else but I think most of what I said still holds truth.

This is a great video and sends great message. Personally, I have experienced a similar wakening call. We all live in a capitalistic society, and the culture is shaping us into believe that we are destined to be a 'consumer' for the rest of the our lives. Just like what you mentioned, we all once dreamed we gonna be a billionaire, but at its core is that we want to be able to spend that much. Being able to consume a lot is not an applaudable achievement nor a noble goal. Instead we should all look inside and find what we could bring to the society as a creator or a supporter. Blindly consume everything and pay for the tag will eventually have us to flush all of our hard-end money down to the 'toilet' and back to the people who already had more than us from the beginning. Greed will never end, the dopamine release coming from copping a hyped sneaker can only last till the package is opened, and it will not be a sustainable source of happiness. What is hyped is something that determined by the mass consensus, but if any of us want to be more than just an average Doe, we need to always remember what other people thinks doesn't necessary have to be the same as what we think.

Went through this in the past two years. It feels like a new sense of freedom not being stressed out on FOMO. I think it’s okay to appreciate a tangible item, but a person doesn’t need to own every single sneaker that comes out. It’s okay to like something and never owning it. Enjoy what you and “time” is the true luxury.

I got out of the sneaker game a while back because of a lot of the reasons you mention here. I recently started to get back into it but have made a point to avoid the "influencer" types that need to turn EVERYTHING into a dick measuring contest. Fortunately, it's easy to identify them so you just as quickly ignore them. I was into kicks before social media was around and it was a lot more genuine and enjoyable that way. I feel bad for kids getting into sneakers or anything else and then getting turned off because some d-bag influencer makes them feel inadequate for not having a LV tote bag especially for their red Octobers....only rule of sneakers is buy and rock what YOU want. It's very liberating when you finally realize that.

And one point I know everyone won't understand that stood out as someone who does content in this space 6:24 ... it's truly centered on just spending money, endlessly! Nonstop, every drop, and there's an inherent expectation to know about every drop and care about every one, as said at 0:38 , absolutely don't care to know every sneaker, especially if I have no interest in buying them. I haven't even been at this for 10 yrs and already where you are (in perspective) Mike (likely because I'm older as well). Hey Sneaker Life, I too have been feeling this fatigue with sneakers and materialistic desires. The magic of buying these things is the story they tell and the work you put in to ultimately afford them, not the item itself. Specifically for the sneaker market, it’s been bastardised into a whole business of reselling and yes we have experienced that in the past but it’s just gotten out of hand to the extent that normal consumers who want to enjoy sneakers for what they are and not treat them as a quick cheque or a commodity can’t even do that. I can speak for the rest of your audience that we have grown and matured, and this video letting us know we aren’t the only ones who’ve experienced the diminishing magic of innocence and our love for sneakers is very reassuring. I’ve been to that cycle as a sneaker lover too. It was a nice ride until I realized one day that it was so stressful because you’ll get addicted to it and you never stop wanting for more. As a 31 years old I realized peace of mind is more important than spending to the things you never really “need” just to feed your ego. Lesson learned is, just be wise and contented 🙂

Great video bro… it’s so hard to find videos like these now a days but we most definitely need more of this. I’ve get this way for so long and I’ve mediated on these same points you made so it’s crazy to sit here watch someone else say it. Again great video!

I feel this. Nowadays, I only allow myself to grab 3 pairs of J’s a year, it’s enough to be happy and invested in the hobby, but I’ve learned how to get over the FOMO associated with the culture. I’ve learned that if I miss out, there’s always another pair that I’ll really like.

Once I got my own place and moved out of my parents house the sneaker buying slowed down dramatically priority’s shift

this video is something i never thought the younger generation would do. i've been working out since i was 20 which was decades ago, now old man but still workout like there's tomorrow and at my age there might not be a tomorrow. glad you are seeing life in a different way. in my late 20s and early 30s i did the sane and even though i still buy a shoe here and there which is like maybe twice a year but i'm not going to let it run my life like it did in the 90s and early 2000s. i see others on youtbe that never ever change and in 2010 they were doing the same thing in 2015 then again 2020 and it's bonkers. i did 11 years in the Army and from year 1 in 2000 and 11 years later when i left in 2011 and everything in between was all different. i am glad you woke up and see how sneakers make people slaves to the companies. waking up and seeing just enjoying life one day at a time is the best. people in the sneaker world always worried about stuff that isn't important. they always say " i need" when they don't understand that you don't need, you want is what it really is. i'm closer to the finishline then i am the stsrting line and i'm letting anyone waste a second of whatever i have left. i have in laws who drive landrover but owe a ton of money but i drive a x5 and paid for it full and i sleep knowing that my car might not be the fanciest but it's paid for. don't know if that made sense. enjoy life young king 🙏🏽

Wow, your perspective at your age is very profound. I totally agree with you also. Being a slave to money or materials is not a great idea and that doesn’t mean you can’t have nice things, be wealthy and enjoy life. It looks different for everyone, but we all should be true to ourselves and not to what we think we should be doing based on what others think.

Materialism consumes most Americans and reduces the quality of our lives. It’s really sad we learn that we don’t need that much stuff until after years or decades of reckless spending

Im 23, I been collecting since I was 13. I always thought I wouldn’t grow out of sneakers. But recently I’ll say after 2020 I started falling out of love for the game. The shoe game became too saturated and it became a flex game. I’ll say the last pair of js I genuinely was excited for was bred 2019s

I’m 29 and about to be 30 in a week and i agree with everything you’re saying, with being young and wanting to be a millionaire or make x amount of $$, with the fake hustle/influence space/wanting everything to be perfect, old ppl telling you to do this that and the third but only realizing it when you really go thru it yourself.

Inflation killed the sneaker game I remember a pair of foams cost $220 Now they like $250 some.., Crazy
