Sneako is also completely wrong about the message of Cuties. I suppose he lost focus after starting beating it to the girls. The movie is just as critical of Islam as it is of Social media. The entire point of the movie is that the girl is put into strict gender roles, and considered a "woman" by her religion after having her period, when she is literally just 11 years old. She sees how awful Islam is to women, having to watch her mother cry after learning her husband is taking a second wife. It's the awful culture that pushes the girl into the social media stuff, as her way of escaping it. The religion tells her that she needs to cover up, or else she is a hoe, and is tempting men. Telling an 11 year old that she is an object of s3xualization, therefore needs to hide herself. To rebel, she does the opposite. But that doesn't make her happy either. Because both are two sides of the same coin. The moral of the movie is that both Islam and social media is degenerate, and puts awful expectations on young girls. In the end, she is not a woman. She is just a child. Showcased by the end, when she leaves both the Islamic wedding, and the dance, to go out and play like a normal girl.

LGBTQ has been a staple in Japanese culture for quite a while. Kabuki, a traditional theatre art dating back as far as the Edo period, has male actors who use makeup and play female characters. Homosexuality was accepted, even in Edo period Japan. Yaoi and Yuri, manga that focus on gay and lesbian relationships, have a large fanbase and market. Cross-dressing and trans identity is also talked about in anime, books, and movies.

so sneako doesn't seems to understand that consuming media requires the viewer to suspend their disbelief for the sake of watching a story. Most people are capable of watching horror movies or high schoolers having lots of sex on screen cause the viewer understands on some level that it's not real. No one's actually getting cut up and the actors playing the role of a high schooler having lots of sex and doing drugs is really in their 20s. The problem with Cuties is that it is actual literal children being filmed doing very sexual things. There's no suspension of disbelief. The audience is forced to watch children being sexualized and there's no cold comfort of "well they probably used adult body doubles for those shots" It doesn't matter what moral the movie was trying to tell. The moral get thrown out the window when the audience is forced to participate in something that is border on being a crime

The other was surnames. It’s a big debate in Japan if wives should be allowed to keep their surnames or if they should have to take their husbands’ names. My point was that Japan has its own culture war issues and that Sneako is ignorant of them. Oh and Japan does have LGBT people too.

There is "LGBT wokness" in Japan. Many cities are changing their school uniforms to be more inclusive actually. There are people in the government actively trying to pass new laws to support gay marriage and new child adoption laws. And people here don't see each other as extended family unless you live in a small village. Which is the case in most countries. People only help each other when they feel social pressure to do so. These people don't care about helping the person, they care about the looks they'd get and the fear of judgment if they didn't. People don't understand that Japanese people aren't all "nice". They're "polite". Big difference.

I’ve been living here as an immigrant for almost 20 years in various areas of Japan, and their most certainly is LGBT, trans, it’s not a hot topic and it’s not as common as the west but it does exist. There’s less discrimination in many ways because nobody cares people just live their own lives. He is right about things more civilized but that’s in someways, but there are problems just like everywhere else in the world. I don’t get how he comes here on a trip and all of a sudden he’s an expert of all things Japan. He has no idea what he’s talking about.
