Sneaky rat found a way to woman's heart

When I was 12 my parents brought home "biggee rat"- this creature was much more than human. He understood our language, a very sensitive kind loving joyful quirky best friend, confidant, buddy, pal. He lived for 5 years, and passed from cancer. I'm now 64 and have been blessed to have many rescue animals (married to a veterinarian over 47yrs). All of these animals no matter the species have been a blessing to us and the world... forever companions.

Wow living for five years is impressive! That’s amazing! I agree with you 100%, rats are totally more than human, they are incredibly intelligent and just know so much more about so many things than we do. If you really think about it, humans are one of the more simple species with some of the most out of whack priorities and values, and animals are so pure, innocent, and know what’s important in life❤️.

It really was a super cool experience, you know there’s a number of people in your life that you love unconditionally no matter what they do… Your spouse, children, parents, best friends, pets…but most people still annoy you or upset you or you get overwhelmed by them from time to time. The incredible thing about my bond with Frankie is that not once did she ever annoy me, upset me, or feel like a burden in any way shape or form ❤️🐁. I didn’t think it was possible to truly never feel anything but positive thoughts and emotions towards someone.

This reminds me of my beautiful Schmegal…..having a pet rat was one of the most amazing and loving experiences I’ve ever had. Never in a million years did I think I would get to share my life with one…..but, it is so very true; they are unlike any other animal. When you are accepted as family….you are bonded for life….even after death, they live on in our hearts. We had 2 1/2 years with our darling Schmegal and I miss him dearly. Your dear Frankie looks so much like our Schmegal….made me tear up a bit. ❤️❤️

They make great pets I'd suggest a boy rat. Had a girl who gave birth to 12 babies all survived and we found home for all of them.

They are so great!!! You should research before buying though, as they are very intelligent and need a lot of care!!! It’s best to have 2-3 rats to start with ( they are social animals! They need other rats, Even males !! ) and they need a huge cage!!!

I agree 100%, there’s a lot to know about rats that most people don’t know, and that wouldn’t be told or explained when acquiring them depending on where you get them from. Most good rescues have some instruction and teaching as part of the adoption process, we’ve got some good information in our fostering and adoption pages on our website, and I’m going to start making and posting some fact pages to help people learn some of these things :)

@@foxesproject5031 I know I wish I had After I got him a friend of mine that's a vet told me they don't really live very long After a year he began getting tumors on his tail I'm not sure how old he may have been when I got him It was sad cuz I was in an unexpected situation where I could no longer keep him or afford care and it happened right around the time he became ill Figures I didn't know what to do so I brought him back to the pet store I got him at, not for a refund or anything But cut they said they'd be able to make him comfortable and not alone for his remaining time 😭

I saw a video recently where someone explained how they can love rats when they live such short lives. They said rats lives are short for us, but for them we’re their forever. What a blessing to be able to give such a sweet animal a beautiful life ❤️

Exactly, we are totally there forever, and time is all relative, humans are taught that a long life is a good life, but that’s not necessarily true. Maybe we have to reframe the way that we think about things:)

Five years! That’s amazing, I’m so jealous, my best estimate was that Frankie was probably about three, maybe a little bit more, it’s always hard to tell when you don’t know where they came from and it’s difficult to tell their age. I had her for two years though:) Best two years of my life!

I had three rats, all rescues, and they were hands down amazing pets with lots of affection to give. They followed me around, came when I called them, cuddled in my lap, on my shoulder, in my hair, and always wanted to be near me. They are smart and will play with you, and are very clean. The worst part about having a pet rat, is their lifespan is way too short.

I had rats when I got my first flat. They are loving very clever lovely creatures. Then I got one called Basil when I was a mum. The thing is I don't have them anymore because for me they don't live long enough, especially for children. It's just too heartbreaking. I've rescued 3 cats, well one of them came to me himself. He had a collar on that was starting to choke him, skinny and bedraggled. I started to feed him outside and after about 8 months he finally sat on my knee the other night and let me stroke him. So keep going with your rescues You're a doctor with a huge heart. Well done and Frankie was beautiful.

I am taking care of my granddaughter’s rat and I love that boy. He is 3 years old now and to think of him leaving me brings me to tears. Gosh.........let me put a smile on your face first........before those tears...... The last 2 months, I have been talking about my rat (and this is straight up no lie), who is actually "4-1/2 YEARS OLD" to this day and in PERFECT HEALTH ! I am certainly blessed for this luck (had enough rats to know), and realize this age happens probably every three leap years !!!! Trust I'll be devasted when the day comes as well, but know I'm on at least an "OK......lets just go with it mode" I am hoping your grandaughter has that same blessing or BETTER !!! 🐀

I love Frankie's story. And the policy of honoring a "lost" baby with another needy life is one l really understand. Rats are wonderful pets. The sad thing is they only live a few years. My daughter and l went to buy a male rat and we did. But there was this tiny rat being picked on by a bigger one. She was the runt so we bought her too. She grew to be a feisty little woman. Our cat was afraid of her. My daughter was allowed to bring her to school where she stayed in her carrier and occasionally threw parts of her food on the desk. Minnie was a joy to all of us.

Everything she said is true. Rats are absolutely wonderful, intelligent, clean and loving... The worst thing about them is what a short lifespan they have... I was crying listening to her talk about the relationship she had with Frankie because I could hear the breaks in her voice as she spoke.. Beautiful soul❤️

I love rats. We used to have Russian Blues. They are so kind, loving, funny and gentle. Thank you for stepping up and rescuing her. Most people would be afraid to rescue a rat. You have a heart of gold. She is just gorgeous. She makes me miss my Mariposa.

I lost my 17-yr.old Russian Blue five days after you lost your dear Frankie, Dr. Madigan. She was my barnacle - wanted to be with me always. So glad I had the last couple years of her life with her 24/7. Frankie reminds me of a fellow teacher's classroom pet rat, Oreo. Delightful little guy. I spoiled him rotten when I was at the school.
