Great short (yet nicely condensed) lesson on Dickie and utilizing the major scale (with the twist!) in lieu of the tried and true minor pentatonic, M.Z.! Brothers & Sisters sealed the deal for me, but I really started catching on with the Filmore and especially Eat a Peach. Amazing telltale strength and popularity of any band that sadly loses their esteemed leader (Duane to that horrific motorcycle accident) and not only doesn't miss a beat and even thrives for decades after! "Jessica" is the first time I asked, "Dang! Who are these guys?" When I heard it on the radio. LOL! I fell in love *BEFORE* I even heard "One Way Out"! Yeah, they're just the best. I like "Brothers and Sisters" a lot, but losing Duane ... it hurt for sure. He made everyone better.

Great job Mark. Being a Peachhead for more decades than I care to recall, your comment about Dickey and the fiddle is spot on. I read somewhere years back that a music producer heard Dickey’s playing and commented that Dickey’s father must have been a fiddle player. Dickey’s playing, for me, is so melodic, example of Blue Sky, the playing is uplifting in a sense. Hearing many players over the decades, I find that only a handful can really move me, Dickey can move me with one note. PS: listening to At the Fillmore East shows how fierce the ABB was at that time. Duane’s playing was sensational and on those nights, Dickey was truly on fire.🔥
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 ай бұрын
Thanks, and that's great insight! Yes, I love the Fillmore East recordings and not just for Dickey and Duane. The Allman Brothers had so much drive in their music. As great as Duane and Dickey were, the band in total was so much more. They truly produced some amazing moments, both exciting and emotional. "One Way Out" is a great example of this. (I think it was on Eat a Peach, but recorded live at The Fillmore.) One of my favorite songs ever.

Love the work that you do Mark, which I have only just discovered. I am a beginner guitarist and so I am reluctant to say that I believe that their is an error on2.29 of your video when you refer to the Major Pentatonic but the diagram shows the E Minor Pentatonic. I hope that this is helpful to you. If I have wasted your time, I apologise.

Over the E you can also noodle with the major 7th (D#), but just be sure to avoid it during the A chord.
@johnlove7203
@johnlove7203 2 ай бұрын
Blue Sky is really E mixolydian, not E major. So Dickie uses D natural, the flat 7th, on the rare occasions he hits a 7th.
@protonman8947
@protonman8947 2 ай бұрын
It can be whatever you like when improvising, but in his solo on Eat a Peach, he does not hit the D flat 7th even once. The scale he used is most often called E hexatonic, which does not include the flat 7, and so is by no means E myxolidian.@@johnlove7203

Dickie's a great player I think he was a perfect mirror for Duane and would have been amazing if Duane and Berry didn't die, I think Duane's approach to music was key to their sound. DIckie's up there on my favorate's list but depending on the day I may say Duane is my #1 favorate of all time. Blue Sky is an amazing song I can play it all day
@MarkZabel
@MarkZabel 2 ай бұрын
Yes, I agree. Something about Duane elevated everyone in the band. My all-time favorite is (well, *today* in any case ... who knows what my mood will be tomorrow) is One Way Out from the Eat a Peach live recording. Dickey's solo on that is absolutely superb. And then the break where they trade 4's ... and then Duane's slide solo is just out of this world, not to mention Gregg's singing and the rest of the band's drive too. Amazing performance. But then, they had many such "amazing" performances. For me, they were the best.
