I think Horizon Focus is justifiable. I'll open the conversation. I'm interested to hear anyone's thoughts. Let's contrast Horizon Focus with Shadowflame as items for Ahri this game: * Ahri did not build any flat magic pen (Luden's, Sorcs, etc) to enhance the effect of the magic pen on Shadowflame. * Charm is a really gross ability to have up more often. (+15 AH) * Along with Horizon Focus 10% damage amp after landing Charm, Ability Haste on Horizon Focus is also a DPS increase. * The enemy comp is fairly tanky, and fights should allow for multiple spell rotations. (AH is useful) * Horizon Focus damage amp applies to true damage (Ahri Q2). * Horizon Focus passive is front loaded: land Charm, receive full effect. * Shadowflame passive is back loaded: need to burst target to under 1000 health to receive the full magic pen. (or, of course, hit a shielded target. team comp dependent.) * Enemy comp is stacking health. * Enemy mid is somewhat tanky (Galio). * The enemies with shields are somewhat tanky (Naut / K'sante). * The enemies with shields have built MR. (* Shadowflame is more useful against, say, enchanters, who may apply shields to squishier targets.) But there is a catch: * Horizon Focus passive requires landing Charm. Not so easy to do. OVERALL here's where I'm at: * Horizon Focus = ability haste and damage. More frequent charms and ults. * Shadowflame = no ability haste, but still damage. Is it more burst? Maybe / probably. Is it more DPS? Maybe / hard to tell. * Maybe Shadowflame is more damage, and HF is more cc (charms) and utility (ults). Maybe this is all it comes down to. Hard to tell. Further: * Ahri is the only good source of magic damage on their team. We know the enemy will not build MR. * At 30 minutes into the game, the enemy has very little MR. Just a Jak'sho on the top laner, and Mercs on the support. * Why isn't Ahri building flat pen? * At least she is thematically consistent with her build : * Values the Haste from Ionian Boots over Sorc's pen. * Values the Haste from Horizon Focus over Shadowflame's pen. * Values the Haste from Liandry's over Luden's pen. (Although Liandry's health shred is objectively good here too.)
