I don’t think Iwamura made the SOS sign. I believe there’s more skeletons out there that just haven’t been found, along with their belongings. There’s no way that fake safe rock only fooled him and the other two lost hikers over that five year period.

My theory 1. Iwamura wasn't seriously injured, he was simply stranded in the area. The place he was stranded in was incredibly difficult to escape from. He can't backtrack or find his way out. In fact, a crewmate from the news team visited the area and couldn't escape. They had to be rescued from there to escape. It was even mentioned in the tape recording that Iwamura couldn't escape because of the bamboo shrub being in his way and that he was stuck in that place. It's very possible that he recorded it as he was losing his voice so he could use the recording as substitute to gain attention from rescue member. This along with the poor mic quality could also serve as a reason as to why his family member couldn't recognize his voice. 2. As mentioned before, if Iwamura wasn't injured, he could've just as well spent his time there making an SOS sign. In the tape, he mentioned helicopter. It's possible that he noticed the helicopter the first time around and decided to build the SOS sign so he can get it's attention later on if the helicopter comes back again. As to what tools he could've used, that is unknown but my theory is that it's lost to nature or discarded after it was broken. 3. Birch wood is incredibly resilient. Under the right condition, it could easily last 5 years, maybe more before it deteriorate beyond recognition. They are some of the toughest and weather resistant wood, which is why it's a popular choice for buildings.

I think he doesn't even need tools to create that sign. For one, fallen trees and logs are quite common in forests, usually caused by strong wind/storm and assuming that the clearing he made the sign are near a birch forest, then there would be plenty of fallen trees scattered around for him to drag and assemble. It's possible that he got his injuries after or during the making of the SOS sign which would explain why he can't return to tree where he stashed his belongings (most likely also his temporary shelter). If he was injured before (for example in the bamboo thickets and clift that was mentioned in the video), then the sheer exhaustion from making the sign and lack of food/water might cause him to choose staying near the sign in case a helicopter spotted him. We don't exactly know the extend of his injuries so just the fact he have broken bones doesn't mean that he's unable to move or even bleeding.

Oh, maybe that was someone else who said it, lol. I think maybe he tried to get out after making the sign and ended up falling from cliff, or something else that caused his injuries, then not being able to move, succumbed to the animals.

Hey, Sushii, speaking of Japan, there was also an incident in Japan where a man was stuck *inside, in-between the pipes* of an old squatting toilet. He died inside the female toilets, and his death was a mystery if you connect timelines. I don't know all the details but really, I just would love to see you go through this case. Japan's toilet case. People say he crawled in there to be a pervert, others said he was put in the pipes to die, making it a murder case, but who knows? Would love to see your thoughts on this one, really.

from what i know about that case, the bathroom in question had been disused for years and was well known to be. The victim had also been known to local criminals, so it really sounds like they just did a murder in a way that the victim would be dismissed and hated for and not properly investigated

This urban legend happened on 28 Feb 平成元年 1989 in 日本福岛線 Story background: They were teachers and are teaching in a school in the village. It is not a public female toilet but a individual toilet pipe connected to the female colleague's school dorm that he kind of fancy. Deceased was pretty well known at their village as he was often involved in many village community activities. Rumors: He wanted to try to sneak in there to have a look of how it's like when the lady wasn't in the dorm(She was on leave during the National mourning and the deceased knows about this). There was an election for village chief and one of the candidates knew he was good with speech and decided to get his help to pull votes for him and the opposition was afraid of losing the election which then silenced him and setup like he wasn't murdered. He was found dead naked on 28 Feb 1989 in the toilet pipe with head facing up with a sweater on his chest and a shoe on his head.Another shoe was found quite a distance away by the river bank and his car was also found parked nearby the school's dorm but key was intact. Here is my theory: Contrary to some opinions, there was solely one individual present at the scene. His tape recording contains no mention of another person's presence, neither a "traitor" who abandoned him nor a "companion" who got lost. The man was uninjured at the time he constructed the SOS sign from birch logs. After erecting the sign, he may have attempted to navigate back to the earlier encountered bamboo forest, where he subsequently became ensnared or was assailed by hostile fauna. This encounter likely resulted in his fractured leg and severe injuries. The record stating "The bamboo grass is too deep" corroborates that he recorded this while in the bamboo jungle. (It is plausible that animals later transported his body to the wetlands.) He independently constructed the SOS sign, which should be unequivocally clear. Although the exact tools used remain unidentified, it is plausible that he utilized birch branches that had fallen nearby, either through natural causes or as a result of woodcutters' activities. He fashioned these logs into the SOS sign without the aid of additional tools. He was unable to continue his trek due to the dense mist enveloping the mountains, which significantly impaired visibility (as evidenced by the accompanying photograph). Consequently, he needed to create a conspicuous SOS sign to attract the attention of helicopter rescuers. Yeah so thats it.

Damn, i was about to comment my own theory but you beat me to it. Yes, I believe he could've gotten the birch tree somewhere without cutting or using any tools. He wouldn't able to go back to civilisation based on the outlook of very tall bamboo grass, afraid that he could get lost. As for the voice, I'm pretty sure the parents couldn't identify it due to how muffled it is, due to exposure of heat/nature & ended up changing the pitch/tone. As for the bones, there's about 10% error rate determining the pelvic bones if it's male/female, so it could be the forensic error. Trees that has fallen & rot will take years depending on the moisture. I bet the two hikers didn't see the logs because it doesn't look like a log anymore due to rotting. But you can see the large size residue (which the two hikers didn't recognize because they thought it was natural)

I think my theory is that Iwamura wasn’t alone and was with somone else. That leads me to believe that that’s how they spelled the SOS sign with birch wood. And since Iwamura’s parents didn’t recognise his voice in the tape the person who was talking was his other friend or hiker that was with him.

That’s truly terrifying. However, with his parents unsure of the voice, it could be from his lack of water that led his voice to become raspy…a voice that didn’t sound like him…or another person who had joined him.

My theory: He fell into the hole in the tree, found a Hallucigenia that made him into a Titan. With the strength of the titan he can break the trees with his brute strength and lay them up as SOS signs. As for the reason why he did not try to leave the place as a titan? It's the same reason why he could have placed all these trees instead of using his strength to leave the mountain, he simply do not know where to go and which direction it is towards civilisation.

The two hikers are the pranksters, they heard about Kenji's dissapearance, found his items and thought it'd be fun to make huge SOS sign, make voice recordings then act like they know nothing 2.
