I always envied the famicom for having a better overall look, they have an actual logo lol, the fact the controller looks a bit nicer too and coincides with the logo too. Wish we would have gotten quite a few of the japanese exclusives too, thankfully translated roms online have fixed that and reproduction carts too lol

Savio Dias But the NTSC version SNES have many legendary games that are not available for the PAL version SNES (like Earthbound and Super Mario RPG) so even though the console is ugly the games are what are more important. (There is also some games that are only available in PAL region but those are not usually very good games). PAL games also had 50 Hz instead of 60 Hz and that usually made games run slower even though the graphics in some games looked much better in the PAL region.

Great episode! I love the super famicom design over the wester design. I remember the christmas snes launched in 1991, the mall had an eb games mini store with a kiosk of super mario world which was playable for about 20 minutes. the line of people was WRAPPED around half the mall all day everyday!! I've never seen new console kiosk excitement like that since.

All I thought about when I saw the buttons was the candy Smarties; I am so glad I am not the only one, lol. The non-US console design def. had the right idea. Also, my first exp. in playing started with an aunt who rented the console and three games... for several months! The store finally just called and asked her to bring it in with a greatly reduced fee. I didn't get to play the SNES again for over a year. Great memories, guys!

Great video guys, I've still got very fond memories of getting a SNES for Christmas back in the early 90s. I got the Control Set with Final Fight, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II and a Asciiware SNES Advantage, good times. I agree that the Japanese SFC looked a lot nicer than the SNES. Not sure why they decided to go with a different case and purple buttons but at least it still played the same.

My first exposure to super famicom was via a news piece from CNN tech reporting from CES with Miles Obrien. I knew that it would be repeated in the day so I sat there with my VCR recording to make sure I could catch it. I did and re-Ted clips of super Mario works and f-zero over and over again. I'm with you rob-man. The early days of super famicom are like religious lore and I will never forget living that moment.

Personally I think the super famicom looks more like an office appliance than it does a game console, but as for the Mega Drive, the only reason it was called the Genesis is because of a copyright from another company. Sega would have been sued if they kept the name.

I got my SNES close to launch , and I was not aware of Super Famicom till years later. I didn't get game mags regularly, and my friends and I didn't really care what they had in Japan I guess. Yes the Super-Fami looks a heck of a lot better, I would of been pissed too if I was made aware of it before hand. As for the redesign on the SNES...Japan just stuck with their belief that ppl in N. America liked things big, bulky, and boxy. Great video guys!

I agree that the Super Famicom is the better looking console. It's sleeker and more elegant. But the design of the NA Super Nintendo is not horrible. I think just one small change to it would improve it quite a bit in the looks department...Change the color of the power and reset switches. I don't know why they went with purple, but it gives the SNES a very toy-like look. Change the switch color to red, black, or even dark grey, and it would look more serious. there is another video of an SNES that a guy painted gloss black and red that looks sexy as heck. Granted, Nintendo probably didn't want to color the SNES in black since its main competitor the Genesis was black, but hey what can you do?

The design change for the U.S was completely unnecessary and really mind-boggling. Why? Really just why? They kept the design of the Super Famicom here in Europe for the PAL SNES and I always thought it looked really nice.. and only years later did I actually see the U.S design for the first time. I was not even aware that there was a Super Nintendo that was not round without the multi-colored candy buttons, but instead blocky with purple buttons :O
@christopherb27
@christopherb27 10 жыл бұрын
Purple always was a go to color Japanese companies use to make their products look sleek at the shows. Back during the Sega-Snes console war when Sony was first revealing the PSX it was entirely purple including the controller. Which we all thought made it look a look completed and closer to a true release date than what Nintendo, and other companies had been promising us and constantly changing release dates. I remember the frustration of "Project Reality" then "Ultra 64" and finally Nintendo releasing the thing.

I'm glad you brought this up. It's such a small footnote in history but the SNES design always bugged the hell out of me as the previews in magazines in 1989 were showing the beautiful Super Famicom. Even the multicolor logo was this awesome touch as it artistically made sense because the SNES was such a colorful system at the time. SNES reminded me of the Master System on steroids. Lance Barr who designed the case clarified that "The Super Famicom was maybe okay for the market in Japan. For the US, I felt that it was too soft and had no edge. We were always looking at future modular components (even the NES had a connector on the bottom), so you had to design with the idea of stacking on top of other components. I though the Super Famicom didn't look good when stacked and even by itself, had a kind of "bag of bread" look." Ended up still being a very poor aesthetic choice. It also doesn't explain the bland muted colors. No offense to Lance but I trust Japanese designers over American ones 9 times out of 10 when it comes to these type of things. For example has anyone ever compared the artwork from the Japanese boxes to American ones? American ones are terrible across the board. Here's an example of UN Squadron for U.S. www.mobygames.com/images/covers/l/236949-u-n-squadron-snes-front-cover.jpg UN Squadron for Japan(renamed the proper title Area 88) otaku.com/files/images/fullsize/51334Y.JPG Super Mario World US cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-ymgqt/images/stencil/original/products/26439/35831/snes-super-mario-world-box__93325.1489073566.jpg?c=2&imbypass=on Super Mario Word Japan www.supergabygames.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/SMW_SMB4-JAP_-_COVER.jpg

You need your eyes rinsed. Besides ithat is not the super Famicon, that's the Pal Snes. The Pal Snes looks so much better, it looks modern even today. The american snes looks like a gray and purple brick. It's like comparing champange to carbonated piss.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I agree with LoDDEMOCIDE, the American SNES had such an iconic design. The Super Famicom has a cooler looking controller, and the logo is better, but the console itself just seems so... boring and standard to me. Plain grey-on-grey colors, and a curved design that seems reminiscent of the Genesis/Mega Drive. It just seems so utilitarian to me, like a tape player, while the American SNES looks like a proper video game console. I will say, though... I prefer the way the SFC carts looked, despite the lack of any end labels.
@MrGencyExit64
@MrGencyExit64 10 жыл бұрын
ZombifiedDuder I don't know, I think the boxy design of the american SNES looks about as ridiculous as the SuperGrafx. In many ways the two things look very similar (nevermind the difference in color). I like the simple design on the Super Famicom, it looks like something you'd play games on, rather than a weapon.

Johnny, regarding the piece of tape on your SNES controller ~12 inches up from where it connects, i believe you originally had taped up the frayed wires at the base and the tape slide down (probably scotch tape which its adhesive can dry up quickly) So it doesn't look like it was cut then taped up (that's what i think you guys were thinking while filming) I'm such a nerd for writing this O_o, but i love this review, keep em' coming!

***** all of our games right up to and including PS2 were 17% slower and had horrible black borders

***** because PAL has a higher clock frequency and more lines than NTSC but all the games were made for NTSC, they had to be 'slowed' to compensate for the clock difference and borders put on to compensate for less lines. The only times we had a better version of games instead of much worse was on British games like Wipeout and on certain games on the sweet sweet Dreamcast that were 'Pal 60hz'.

A very great video to start my day with (while having my good morning coffee of course ^^)... I just can understand while both of you had these bright eys while talking about the SNES/FAMICOM, after this video I just would like to start right away to play with the machine again, but now I have to go to work ;-( Maybe I'll come up with a videoresponse later on, too :-) Have a good one and thx for the nice vid!

I remember when I got my Super Famicom, it was a RELIGIOUS experience, my dad shelled out $400 plus shipping from JAPAN, I had it a week after release, and I got Super Mario Bros.4 (World) with it. As a matter of fact, I still have it, it's sitting right here beside me and it still works flawlessly. It's tied IMHO with my Turbo Duo for #1 console.

Question, I bought a Super Famicom and I live in the US. It came with the official Nintendo adapter. The adapter says 100V. US is standard for 120V. Hooking the system to the outlet can it damage or harm the ac adapter? Any help is appreciated.

That diamond layout for the 4 face buttons (where the distance between the left-most and right-most buttons is greater than the distance between the top-most and bottom-most buttons) on the SNES controller was amazing. Wish they'd go back to that design.

I just received a Super Famicom and am getting no display on my (US) TVs. I've tried using both RF (using channels 95 and 96) and composite a/v with no luck. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Great idea for a video guys. Loved hearing your thoughts on the two systems and have to agree that the Super Famicom is the better design. I may be biased as that's the one I've got and I'm glad they brought that design over here to the UK. I recently made a video on the system myself and would like to post it as a response. I hope that's acceptable as it's not a direct response but I do talk about why I prefer the Japanese design over that launched in North America.

Speaking as someone from the UK, I agree 100%! In PAL territories we had the Super Fami design, which to my five year old mind was amazing; everything about it just emphasized 'fun', and it remains my favourite system design (along with the Mega Drive model 1) to this day. When I saw the US SNES design years later, I was all "...the hell did they do!? o_o"

The SFC version of Super Mario World has Japanese text. But it's only an issue when there's text to read, which isn't too often in that game...

i never even heard of snes until as late as 94. when i moved into a new house and the neighbors had it and donkey kong country. i never even got to play but i loved to watch. i begged my parents and got one for Christmas.... i played that thing right through the n64 days right up until i got a game boy advance. the controller cord is duck taped and my favorite games where the 3donkey kong countries, yoshis island, and turtles in time. i just remember playing it then watching that 70's show...

I had the uk pal version but also bought the USA version and loved it so much more because of the ntsc scart output 17 percent faster and cleaner looking you really could tell the difference and I loved my USA SNES and the purple buttons felt different than the other versions great video

I was probably too young to have any real release memories (born in 1990) but I have had a lot of memories with my SNES back when I was 5. The very first game I ever got my hands on at home was Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. I played the crap out of that game. I also lived right across Willows Videos at the time and that's when we rented the N64 when it first came out and I was blown away, I mean I was like 7 at the time. In fact that Willows Videos is still there today. I still go there

Its great to see him do a video on the subject. I feel the same as Johnny and Rob Man. I even went as far as getting a broken Euro Super Nintendo from eBay, as well as a Super Famicom, planning on swapping the working SuFami guts into the broken Euro Super Nintendo. I have a Honeybee (?) converter that I could use for US games on it. That way, I could get a system with the smoother lines, but still said Super Nintendo on the case. I never got around to doing anything after getting them.

I got the SNES for Christmas 1992. I was given the SNES, Super Mario World, Mario Paint, Street Fighter 2, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (abbreviating it cheapens the game) and the Super Scope 6 bundle. I love this system, hands down the greatest ever, I firmly believe people still follow Nintendo because of this. Also, we have the Playstation because of this. It was supposed to be an add-on for the SNES like the Sega CD was. This is quite possibly the best console ever.
