The lack of walkthroughs and limited access to help is something that people really don't understand about playing these old games. I remember playing some of these games for hours just trying to figure out what I needed to do next. That sense of accomplishment when you finally figured it out was amazing.
@Harlem-X2 ай бұрын
I never thought about this aspect, but damn...you are 100% right! Just like movie trailers in recent years giving away the entire freaking movie, as opposed to old school movie trailers giving you about 10 seconds. It's the same thing. You don't get really any surprises anymore because everything is given to you before the games even freaking come out now.

Man, the Super Nintendo was my sweet spot 1991-1995 age 11-15. My favorite system and why I love all the retro games coming out these days in that HD SNES style. Was the golden age of gaming for myself and I really love the music chip the SNES had. The soundtracks in those SNES games still rank as some of the best music in video games. Compare the music in Chrono Trigger to Dragon Quest 11, it’s not even close. The Final Fantasy Prelude from IV and VI on that SNES chip are the best versions of it. I don’t think I could do a top 10 list it would have to be 20. Not only do a lot of these games still hold up as some of the greats of all time, when some of these were released they were mind blowing games that we hadn’t even seen before on top of being excellent. Great video. Fun Story... I got stuck on that wall jump segment where it is first introduced to you and ripped up my Super Metroid box is a serious rage quit moment before I was able to get out of that damn hole 😂.

1. Secret of Mana 2. Zelda 3. Super Mario RPG (The secret fight against Culex blew me and my friend's minds back then haha!) Illusion of Time, Demons Crest, Mega Man X, Turtles in Time, Mario Kart. There are so many great games on the Snes and a lot of good memories. Great video man, love the positivity!

This list is pretty typical(nothing wrong with that) and it demonstrates the main problem I have with the SNES. Many games that are generally considered to be the best on the system are games I don't like. Super Mario World is great. But I'm not a big RPG guy. I don't love Zelda and Super Metroid like others do. I don't like Contra 3. I don't like Axelay. I don't like Super Ghouls n Ghosts. I don't like Castlevania 4(I love 1 and 3 on NES, Rondo on PCE, and Bloodlines on Genesis). I'm not complaining about the games you chose -- your list is your own -- just pointing out a problem I have unique to the SNES. I do like some SNES games, just stuff thats not as popular and some imports. Ninja Warriors, which got an honorable mention, is probably my favorite. Thanks for sharing.

Were you more of a Sega person back then? I had friends in high school who said the same thing, and I was cool with it, because it gave us quite a variety of games to play!

@@dschult3 I was. I started to second guess things later in 1994 when I decided to get the SNES. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, but I did like it and got to play a bunch of cool games for it between what I had, friends, and rentals. I mentioned Contra 3 and it's the mode 7 that kills the game for me. Some games I did like didn't hold up over time for me. I agree with your conclusion as it was a real treat visiting friends and getting to play some good games on a system you didn't have.

Man, when I modded my SNES Classic, I added games I found in these types of videos. "Must haves" for the SNES, and I found myself in the same shoes.... I didnt like 90% of them. Most of the games that are exalted by popular opinion are just overrated. I think part of it may be because they aren't nostalgic to us? Either way, yeah...I had to sift through a lot of titles to find what I wanted.

I played and finished Zelda when I was only 7-8 years old. And I'm swedish, so I had to deal with the language barrier as well. We initially got it when I was 6, but me and my older brother didn't understand the game at first, but we grew to love it. We didn't have a clue what the dialogue was about, but we would figure out where to go by wandering around. The dungeons themselves were not hard. But I think my mindset when playing the game was a bit different to what modern gamers are used to. I played it pretty much like a point and click adventure game. If I got stuck, I would walk and poke around and see if I could reach a new location, then go to a new location and repeat. A great thing about Zelda is that the exploration was so enjoyable, since you were constantly looking for heart pieces and other items, so you didn't really mind that much if you were stuck. I have a memory of one time I would walk around and bomb walls randomly, trying to find some hidden location. Concerning Final Fantasy, we didn't get any of them in Europe until FF7. That's how long we had to wait. Most of the Final Fantasy fans here started with 7, and then we looked back and played the american versions of the older games on emulator. You could also find fan translations of FF5 pretty early on. At first FF5 was my favorite of the older games, mainly because I liked the job system, but eventually, I think as my english was improving, I learned to appreciate the story in FF6 more. And that soundtrack is probably the best video game soundtrack ever made. For some reason I could never get into Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana, but I'll have to finish Chrono Trigger atleast, one of these days.

Super Mario World. My parents rented it for my brother and I when I was 8. We had to be in bed by 9pm, and we were allowed to stay up to 11:30pm. Best memories ever. SNES has the greatest game library of any console, especially considering how the quality doesn't depreciate over time.

You said you'd love a sequel to Super Ghouls N' Ghosts. Are you aware of Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins?

That game is actually super pimp. I love that it had rpg elements to it where you could equip different abilities from your menu screen. I just wish it wasnt 2.5D. It didnt age too well.

F-zero was the very first game I ever bought with my own money from my first paycheck. It was the best feeling and I remember vividly playing that game for hours and hours. I didn't even play more than ten games for snes. I played that and Super Mario World, Zelda link to the Past, Street Fighter 2, and Final Fight. But for me at that time as a poor kid from the projects in the South Bronx that's all I needed.

I’m 6 years older than you so I missed being able to play all these games in High school. I think I get more enjoyment listening to your stories than I do actually playing the games.

Finally a review with some real/different choices rather than the typical stale Super Nintendo top 10s. SOLID!

Yes! Someone I can agree with! When I tell people that your #1 is the same as mine, many people think I'm crazy. Your #1 was not a game for me; It was an experience. I still get chills as I hear the orchestra play that soundtrack when they come to Chicago. Your list is awesome, Johnny! I can totally understand why it was hard to put together though. There are so many great games on the Super Nintendo.

i remember craving for street fighter 2 so bad when i heard it was coming to the super nintendo. i had this... crazy need for it. maybe because at the time i was going through the turbulence of pre-pubescence? i'll never forget the pride i felt when i deafeted M. Bison for the first time.

It was such a different feeling when games came out back then. Great times that I shared with my friends and even the friends that I gained later in life felt like I grew up with them just because of these experiences.
